Effects of interferon in malaria infection   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Earlier, we reported that prophylactic treatment with human interferon gamma (rHuIFN-gamma) protected monkeys against Plasmodium cynomolgi B malaria infection. We have tested the efficacy of rHuIFN-gamma on relapsing stage of experimental P. cynomolgi B malaria infection in rhesus monkeys. No effect of rHuIFN-gamma was seen against experimental relapsing stage compared with controls; however, it appears that chloroquine (CHL) may have interfered with the antimalarial effect of IFN, since treatment with CHL inhibits the antiviral activity of mouse alpha/beta IFN and polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) against Semliki forest virus (SFV) in mice. These results may have clinical implications especially with the use of IFN against virus infection, cancer and in parasitic infections in malaria endemic areas where CHL is one of the most widely used antimalarial drugs. Our result also shows that CHL treatment enhances the virus replication in mice and suggest a possible connection between AIDS and malaria infection, since the spread of AIDS has been rapid in parts of tropical Africa that have a high incidence of malaria, and chloroquine has been frequently used in the chemotherapy of malaria.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to examine the efficacy of lidocaine aerosol pretreatment in attenuating hemodynamic (HD) responses secondary to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in patients undergoing surgery for intracranial space occupying lesions (ICSOL). A semiclosed breathing system was improvised to generate aerosol of consistent density. Five percent lidocaine was nebulized in two different dosages (0.2 and 0.1 ml/kg in groups A and B, respectively); group C (control) received aerosol of normal saline. The average aerosol-treatment time was 24, 12, and 16 min in groups A, B, and C, respectively. Changes in heart rate (HR), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), and rate pressure product (RPP) were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA). In group A, tracheal intubation did not cause significant HD changes. In group B, a significant increase was observed in each HD parameter which, when compared with control, was less severe. Lidocaine toxicity, regurgitation, nausea, vomiting, or aspiration did not occur in any patient. Patients accepted the procedure well. This study found efficacy of the technique to be related to duration of aerosol treatment.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To quantify and compare peak bending force and stiffness of fractured femurs during healing of ovariectomized (OVX) and sham-operated (SHAM) rats. DESIGN: Temporal biomechanical animal study. SETTING: Rat femurs were fractured and surgically fixed by a qualified surgeon. The inherent instability of the fixation system employed produced delayed union of the fracture. All biomechanical assessments were performed with servohydraulic test machines (Instron Inc., Canton, MA, U.S.A.; and MTS Corp., Eden Prairie, MN, U.S.A.). INTERVENTION: OVX was performed sixteen weeks before femur fracture, and the effect of OVX on healing fractures was determined. MAIN OUTCOMES: Peak bending force and stiffness of the healing femurs at four, six, and eight weeks after fracture. RESULTS: Peak bending loads of the healing fractured femurs in the OVX and SHAM animals were not significantly different. Peak bending loads for the OVX animals at four and six weeks were significantly lower than the peak load at eight weeks (p < 0.05), whereas no difference was found in the peak load with respect to time for the SHAM animals. Both SHAM and OVX animals had greater bending stiffness of the healing fractured femur after eight weeks of healing than at four weeks (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: OVX is known to reduce cancellous bone mass and strength, but the effect of OVX on healing of fractures in cortical bone is controversial. This study, using a delayed-union model, found no significant differences between OVX and SHAM animals in the breaking strength of healing fractures.  相似文献

Sarcomas constitute fewer than 1% of the head and neck cancers. They represent less than 1% of laryngeal cancers. Primary rhabdomyosarcoma of the larynx is an extremely rare malignancy. The available literature on this medical oddity is in the form of isolated case reports only. The purpose of this article is to add another case of primary rhabdomyosarcoma of a rare site, the larynx, of which only 36 cases have so far been reported in the world literature. The present patient, an eighteen-year-old boy is only the third case being reported from India among all reported cases of rhabdomyosarcoma of the larynx in the world literature.  相似文献
