Assessing the relation between career satisfaction in psychiatry with lifelong learning and scientific activity

Lifelong learning (LLL) is an essential feature for the doctor to keep clinically updated and has been described as an indicator of competence and professionalism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between career satisfaction in psychiatry, lifelong learning, and commitment in scientific activities, taking into account other personal and professional effects. The survey was sent to 453 national psychiatrists and 190 surveys (41.9%) were completed online and validated. The Jefferson Scale of Physician Lifelong Learning (JSPLL) was used to assess the level of LLL for each doctor. The results of the analysis of JSPLL showed that participants more satisfied with their career have greater motivation and invest more in the LLL. Furthermore, participants who were more satisfied with their career had a higher percentage of scientific activity in the last year. Multiple linear regression with these two effects in the model revealed a positive association between career satisfaction in psychiatry, LLL and the publication of scientific papers, leading to the main conclusion that satisfaction with a career in psychiatry has a significant correlation with LLL and with involvement in scientific activities.     

Interplay between the QseC and QseE Bacterial Adrenergic Sensor Kinases in Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium Pathogenesis

The bacterial adrenergic sensor kinases QseC and QseE respond to epinephrine and/or norepinephrine to initiate a complex phosphorelay regulatory cascade that modulates virulence gene expression in several pathogens. We have previously shown that QseC activates virulence gene expression in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. Here we report the role of QseE in S. Typhimurium pathogenesis as well as the interplay between these two histidine sensor kinases in gene regulation. An S. Typhimurium qseE mutant is hampered in the invasion of epithelial cells and intramacrophage replication. The ΔqseC strain is highly attenuated for intramacrophage survival but has only a minor defect in invasion. However, the ΔqseEC strain has only a slight attenuation in invasion, mirroring the ΔqseC strain, and has an intermediary intramacrophage replication defect in comparison to the ΔqseE and ΔqseC strains. The expressions of the sipA and sopB genes, involved in the invasion of epithelial cells, are activated by epinephrine via QseE. The expression levels of these genes are still decreased in the ΔqseEC double mutant, albeit to a lesser extent, congruent with the invasion phenotype of this mutant. The expression level of the sifA gene, important for intramacrophage replication, is decreased in the qseE mutant and the ΔqseEC double mutant grown in vitro. However, as previously reported by us, the epinephrine-dependent activation of this gene occurs via QseC. In the systemic model of S. Typhimurium infection of BALB/c mice, the qseC and qseE mutants are highly attenuated, while the double mutant has an intermediary phenotype. Altogether, these data suggest that both adrenergic sensors play an important role in modulating several aspects of S. Typhimurium pathogenesis.     

Use of cyanoacrylate in the coaptation of edges of surgical wounds

Cyanoacrylate has been used in several fields of different surgical specialties as an adhesive for closure of gingival flaps and in mucous and cutaneous lacerations. One of its advantages is that it has an excellent immunological response. In view of aesthetic needs, cyanoacrylate has been applied with satisfactory results, when compared with sutures. It presents better coaptation of edges of cutaneous and mucosal lesions, smaller residual scars, and biocompatibility. However, it is limited to areas of little tissue tension. This work attempts to provide a literature review with the aim of revealing the advantages of using tissue adhesives, especially cyanoacrylates, in wound coaptation in comparison with conventional methods.     

Health survey and assessment of the polymorphisms BRCA1/P871L,BRCA1/Q356R,and BRCA2/N372H in female gas station workers in Rio de Janeiro

Gas station workers are exposed to chemicals known to be carcinogenic, especially benzene. The objective was to analyze the health problems of female gas station workers by means of sociodemographic and clinical questionnaires, and laboratorial exams. We performed the genotyping of the polymorphisms BRCA1/P871L and BRCA1/Q356R by Polymerase Chain Reaction‐Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism, and of variant allele BRCA2/N372H through direct sequencing. The female workers showed a higher concentration of monocytes (P = 0.039); a greater number of spontaneous abortions (P = 0.025, OR = 4.977, 95% CI = 1.135–30.669); higher tobacco consumption (P = 0.013); and higher alcohol consumption (P = 0.05). The statistical analysis of the polymorphisms associated with the variables monocyte concentration and miscarriage number did not reveal a significant relationship, and smoking and spontaneous abortion were not statistically associated either.
