Solution of a specific class of nonlinear fractional optimal control problems including multiple delays

This research provides a new framework based on a hybrid of block‐pulse functions and Legendre polynomials for the numerical examination of a special class of scalar nonlinear fractional optimal control problems involving delay. The concepts of the fractional derivative and the fractional integral are employed in the Caputo sense and the Riemann‐Liouville sense, respectively. In accordance with the notion of the Riemann‐Liouville integral, we derive a new integral operator related to the proposed basis called the operational matrix of fractional integration. By employing two significant operators, namely, the delay operator and the integral operator connected to the hybrid basis, the system dynamics of the primal optimal control problem converts to another system involving algebraic equations. Consequently, the optimal control problem under study is reduced to a static optimization one that is solved by existing well‐established optimization procedures. Some new theoretical results regarding the new basis are obtained. Various kinds of fractional optimal control problems containing delay are examined to measure the accuracy of the new method. The simulation results justify the merits and superiority of the devised procedure over the existing optimization methods in the literature.     

Renoprotective effects of estrogen on acute kidney injury: the role of SIRT1

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common syndrome associated with high morbidity and mortality, despite progress in medical care. Many studies have shown that there are sex differences and different role of sex hormones particularly estrogens in kidney injury. In this regard, the incidence and rate of progression of kidney diseases are higher in men compared with women. These observations suggest that female sex hormone may be renoprotective. Silent information regulator 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1) is a histone deacetylase, which is implicated in multiple biologic processes in several organisms. In the kidneys, SIRT1 inhibits renal cell apoptosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. Studies have reported a link between SIRT1 and estrogen. In addition, SIRT1 regulates ERα expression and inhibition of SIRT1 activity suppresses ERα expression. This effect leads to inhibition of estrogen-responsive gene expression. In this text, we review the role of SIRT1 in mediating the protective effects of estrogen in the onset and progression of AKI.

The protective effect of Kombucha against silver nanoparticles-induced toxicity on testicular tissue in NMRI mice

Silver nanoparticles (SNPs) can pass from the cell membrane and testicular blood barrier due to their small size, and by increasing oxidative stress they cause disorder in the male reproductive system. Kombucha is a traditional fermented drink with detoxification and potent antioxidant properties. We aimed to examine the protective effect of Kombucha against the damages due to SNPs on the testis tissue. In this experimental study, NMRI mice were randomly separated into four groups (n = 6), namely control (distilled water), SNPs (500 mg/kg), Kombucha extract (9 ml/kg) and SNPs + Kombucha, and were treated with gavage for 35 days. A significant decrease in testosterone level and total antioxidant capacity, and a significant increase in malondialdehyde concentration was observed in the SNPs group in comparison with the control group. Histological studies on the testis of mice treated with SNPs showed vacuolation, decrease in generational epithelium thickness, seminiferous tubules diameter, testis volume and the number of spermatozoa in lumen of the seminiferous tubule and increase in the volume of interstitial space while the mentioned parameters were improved in the SNPs + Kombucha group compared to the SNPs group. Kombucha reduces the adverse effects of SNPs on testis tissue and improves the function of the male reproductive system.     

The role of sperm in inducing genomic changes in the implantation: An experimental study

Endometrial receptivity and implantation are important topics in reproductive sciences. No evidence was found to support sperm involvement in endometrial receptivity and its associated factors. This study aimed to explore the effect of the normal human spermatozoa–endometrium cell interaction in regulating genes in the endometrial receptivity pathway. Semen samples were collected from a healthy and fertile man; then, they were incubated with endometrial cells for 24 hr and considered as the sperm group. A group was cultured without spermatozoa and considered as a control group. About 24 hr later, cells were collected from the bottom of the culture dish. The expressions of the VEGF, FGF2, HBEGF, LIFR, EGF, LIF, MUC1, HOXA10, CSF and PGR genes were evaluated in the two groups. Statistical analysis was performed using an independent sample test. Compared with the control group, in the sperm group, the mRNA levels of PGR (p = .0451), VEGF (p = .0101), HBEGF (p = .0163), EFG (p = .0339), FGF2 (p = .012), LIF (p = .0324), LIFR (p = .0321) and HOXA10 (p = .0098) were significantly upregulated. The results showed that there is a need for the interaction between spermatozoa and endometrium for implantation and can be used for preparing uterine in in vitro fertilisation cycles.     

A report of pregnancy following ICSI in one of two sisters with familiar primary ciliary dyskinesia

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a disorder of structure and function of motor ciliary and dyskinetic activity of ciliary in the fallopian tubes of affected women and could lead to infertility in some cases. In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a choice of treatment in infertile women with PCD, which could conquer the tubal dysfunction. In this case study, we report a PCD affected woman with infertility who was treated by IVF and pregnancy was achieved but it failed due to the spontaneous abortion. We also performed whole-exome sequencing for this case and her PCD-affected sister, which did not reveal any genetic abnormality related to the PCD or infertility.     

Review of COVID-19 and male genital tract

COVID-19 pandemic leads to health challenges globally, and its diverse aspects need to be uncovered. Multi-organ injuries have been reported by describing potential SARS-CoV-2 entrance routes: ACE2 and TMPRSS2. Since these cell surface receptors’ expression has been disclosed within the male reproductive system, its susceptibility to being infected by SARS-CoV-2 has been summarised through this literature review. Expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 at RNA or protein level has been reported across various investigations indicates that the male genitalia potentially is vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Presence of SARS-CoV-2 within semen samples and following direct viral damage, secondary inflammatory response causing orchitis or testicular discomfort and finally the amount of viral load leading testicular damage and immune response activation are among probable underlying mechanisms. Therefore, genital examination and laboratory tests should be considered to address the male reproductive tract complications and fertility issues.     

Assessment of MUSASHI 1 and MUSASHI 2 expression in spermatozoa and testicular tissue

MUSASHI (MSI) family plays the main role in the spermatogenesis process. The purpose of this study was the assessment of sperm MSI1 and MSI2, and sperm functional tests in infertile men (n = 30) with varicocele and fertile men (n = 30). Furthermore, MSI1 and MSI2 proteins were assessed in testicular tissue of azoospermic men (n = 9) as well as epididymal spermatozoa and testis of mice. Expression of MSI1 and MSI2 was assessed at RNA and protein levels in human spermatozoa. Sperm concentration and motility were significantly lower, while abnormal sperm morphology, lipid peroxidation, DNA fragmentation and protamine deficiency were significantly higher in men with varicocele compared to fertile individuals. Any significant difference was not observed in the expression of MSI1 and MSI2 mRNA between the two groups. Unlike MSI1 protein that was not detectable in humans, the relative expression of MSI2 protein was similar in varicocele and fertile individuals. The expression level of both Msi1 and Msi2 proteins was also observable in mouse spermatozoa. No significant relationship was observed between sperm functional parameters with expression of these genes. The data of this study demonstrated that although MSI1 and MSI2 play important roles during spermatogenesis, their relative expression in spermatozoa was not affected by varicocele.
