The relative sensitivity of four benthic invertebrates (Hyalella azteca, Chironomus riparius, Hexagenia spp., and Tubifex tubifex) was determined for Cd, Cu, and Ni in water-only and in spiked-sediment exposures. Survival (median lethal concentrations [LC50s] and the concentrations estimated to be lethal to 25% of test organisms [LC25s]), and endpoints for growth and reproduction (mean inhibitory concentrations [IC25s]) were compared. The sensitivities differed depending on the species and metal, although some trends emerged. In water-only exposures, H. azteca is the most sensitive species to cadmium and nickel, with mean LC50s of 0.013 and 3.6 mg/L, respectively; C. riparius is the most sensitive species to copper, with a mean LC50 of 0.043 mg/L. In the spiked-sediment exposures, the order in decreasing sensitivity to copper is Hyalella = Hexagenia < Chironomus < Tubifex for survival and growth/reproduction. For cadmium, the order in decreasing sensitivity is Hyalella = Chironomus < Hexagenia < Tubifex, and for nickel is Hyalella < Hexagenia < Chironomus < Tubifex. Chironomus riparius and Hexagenia spp. survival can be used to distinguish between toxicity caused by different metals. Species test responses in field-collected sediment(Collingwood Harbour, ON, Canada) were examined in an attempt to determine the causative agent of toxicity throughout, using the established species sensitivities. Sediment toxicity was categorized first by comparing species responses to those established for a reference database. Test responses in the field-collected sediment do not support causality by Cu, a suspected toxicant based on comparison of sediment chemistry with sediment quality guidelines. 相似文献

The cochlear microphonic potential (CM) and the compound action potential (CAP) cannot be measured separately but only in combination. In the literature their individual estimates are conventionally recovered by the so-called CM cancellation technique. This method averages the potential obtained in response to rarefaction and condensation clicks under the assumption that changing the polarity of the clicks only affects the CM sign and does not alter the CAP in any way. However, both theory and evidence suggest that these hypotheses can be critical. In addition, recent contributions in the electrocochleography (ECochG) literature suggested that assessing the influence of stimulus polarity on the evoked CAP may constitute an indicator of clinical usefulness which the CM cancellation method cannot supply. In this work we propose a new algorithm to estimate the cochlear potentials evoked from positive clicks, CAP+ and CM+, and those evoked from negative clicks, CAP- and CM-, by processing the same kind and amount of data employed in the CM cancellation method. The application to real data taken from 3 subjects exhibiting quantitatively and qualitatively different ECochG responses at various levels of stimulation intensity is presented. In addition, simulated problems where the true CAP and CM are known are studied to permit a fair assessment of the proposed technique. Results suggest that the new algorithm is potentially able to point out small differences between CAP+ and CAP-. This encourages its further employment on a larger scale. 相似文献

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer screening programs are critical for early detection of breast cancer. Early detection is essential for diagnosing, treating and possibly curing breast cancer. Since there are no data on the incidence of breast cancer, nationally or regionally in Brazil, our aim was to assess women by means of mammography, to determine the prevalence of this disease. DESIGN AND SETTING: The study protocol was designed in collaboration between the Department of Diagnostic Imaging (DDI), Institute of Diagnostic Imaging (IDI) and S?o Paulo Municipal Health Program. METHODS: A total of 139,945 Brazilian women were assessed by means of mammography between April 2002 and September 2004. Using the American College of Radiology (ACR) criteria (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System, BIRADS), the prevalence of suspected and highly suspected breast lesions were determined. RESULTS: The prevalence of suspected (BIRADS 4) and highly suspected (BIRADS 5) lesions increased with age, especially after the fourth decade. Accordingly, BIRADS 4 and BIRADS 5 lesions were more prevalent in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh decades. CONCLUSION: The presumed prevalence of suspected and highly suspected breast cancer lesions in the population of S?o Paulo was 0.6% and it is similar to the prevalence of breast cancer observed in other populations. 相似文献

The diagnosis and management of childhood tuberculosis (TB) are major challenges in countries such as Malawi with high incidence of TB and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Diagnosis of TB in children often relies only on clinical features but clinical overlap with the presentation of HIV and other HIV-related lung disease is common. The tuberculin skin test (TST), the standard marker of M. tuberculosis infection in immune competent children, has poor sensitivity in HIV-infected children and is not usually available in Malawi. HIV test should be routine in children with suspected TB as it improves clinical management. HIV-infected children are at increased risk of developing active disease following TB exposure which justifies the use of isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) once active disease has been excluded but this is difficult to implement and appropriate duration of IPT is unknown. HIV-infected children with active TB experience higher mortality and relapse rates on standard TB treatment compared to HIV-uninfected children, highlighting the need for further research to define optimal treatment regimens. HIV-infected children should also receive appropriate supportive care including cotrimoxazole prophylaxis and anti-retroviral treatment (ART) if indicated. Over 200 measurements of the resting rate of oxygen consumption using an open-circuit method were made on 15 small babies nursed in their usual clinical setting during the first month of life. There were striking and persistent variations between babies that could not be explained by postnatal age, relationship to feed, sleep, or time of day. It was not possible from clinical examination to predict which babies had the higher or lower metabolic rates, except that babies who were light-for-dates generally had higher values. Because of these variations the appropriate thermal temperature for small babies cannot be predicted from average values adjusted for body weight and postnatal age alone. 相似文献

BACKGROUND At present, various hyaluronic acids are being used to rejuvenate facial skin. There is no comparative study of single cross-linked hyaluronic acid (SCHA) versus double cross-linked hyaluronic acid (DCHA). The objective of our study is to compare the effectiveness and complications of SCHA versus DCHA in the treatment of glabellar lines.
METHODS Ten female patients were enrolled in this randomized, evaluator-blind study. One side (left vs. right) of each patient's glabellar lines was treated with SCHA and the other side was treated with DCHA. Two independent blinded observers reviewed the clinical photographs at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after the treatment and assessed for degree of improvement as well as complications.
RESULTS The two products were equally effective in producing an optimal cosmetic result, although at 6, 9, and 12 months posttreatment, a higher proportion of patients showed over 50% improvement with DCHA than with SCHA. At 12 months posttreatment, DCHA was considered superior in 70% of patients, whereas SCHA was superior in 10% of patients.
CONCLUSIONS Both SCHA and DCHA are equally effective in producing an optimal cosmetic result. DCHA provides a more durable esthetic improvement when compared to SCHA in the treatment of glabellar lines. 相似文献
