Effect of blocking N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) and non-NMDA-glutamatergic receptors on performance in the plus-maze was studied in male rats bilaterally cannulated into the nucleus accumbens (Acc). Rats were divided into seven groups that received either 1 microl injections of saline, (+/-)2-amino-7-phosphonoheptanoic acid (AP-7, 0.2, 0.5, or 1 microg) or 2,3 dioxo-6-nitro-1,2,3,4,tetrahydrobenzo-(f)quinoxaline-7-sulphonamide disodium (NBQX, 0.2, 0.5, or 1 microg) 15 min before testing. Time spent in open arm, time per entry, end arrivals, open, closed, and total arm entries, relationship between open-, closed-, and total arm entries, rearing, face-, head-, and body grooming, and number of fecal boli were recorded. Time spent in the open arm increased under AP-7 (0.5 and 1 microg; P<.01) and NBQX (1 microg; P<.05) treatment, whereas time per entry was increased only with AP-7 (1 microg; P<.05). Open arm entries were increased by the intermediate doses of AP-7 (0.5 microg; P<.01) and NBQX (0.5 microg; P<.05); end arrivals were increased by the intermediate dose of AP-7 (0.5 microg/1 microl, P<.05). The frequency of rearing, grooming, and closed arm entries was not affected by the treatment. We conclude that NMDA and non-NMDA-glutamatergic blockade in the Acc lead to a behavioral disinhibition of cortical influences with the median doses, but that at higher doses the blockers have an anxiolytic-like effect. 相似文献

The normal once-a-day frequency of suckling in the rabbit was increased on day 31 (late lactation) by the addition of two extra sucklings (8 and 16 hr after) the daily suckling. In confirmation of previous data, two additional sucklings significantly decreased milk yield acutely on day 31 in comparison with the average 4-day milk yield before and after day 31. The decrease in milk secretion after the two additional sucklings was prevented by a single injection of 3 mg prolactin (given 24 hr before the two extra sucklings) and/or by injections of the beta-adrenergic-blocking drug, propranolol (100 micrograms/kg b. wt. given 30 min before each additional suckling). Since prolactin secretion is decreased in these species and the mammary gland is less responsive to the hormone during late lactation, the present results suggest that in addition to these factors, suckling-induced activation of sympathetic influences may contribute to the decline in milk production at this stage of lactation. Taken together, these results suggest that suckling may regulate lactation in the rabbit through antagonistic mechanisms at different stages of lactation. 相似文献

We describe the blood and intestinal parasites in the Ocellated lizard, Lacerta lepida, examining the factors that determine the prevalence and intensity of infection of haemogregarines, and the prevalence of coccidia and nematodes. In relation to haemogregarines, no juveniles were detected as being infected, whereas 71.7 % of adults were infected. The prevalence of infection was positively related to the size of the adults. There were no differences between seasons or sexes in the prevalence or intensity of infection in adults. There were no significant differences in the prevalence of infection by nematodes between ages or sexes, nor in relation to the size of adult lizards, but adult lizards excreting coccidian oocysts tend to be smaller. During the mating period, reproductive activities lead to a decrease in the body condition. However, neither the intensity of haemogregarines infection nor the prevalence of intestinal parasites was related to the lizards body condition. 相似文献

We describe the general field population biology of haemogregarines and mites in the wall lizard, Podarcis muralis, examining the factors that determine the prevalence and intensity of infection. The intensity of infection by haemogregarines in females was slightly lower in summer than in spring, whereas males maintained similar levels of intensity among all the seasons, probably due to immunosuppressive effects of testosterone. This is also supported because the prevalence and the infection intensity by mites were higher in males than in females. Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) causes Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and lymphoproliferative disorders in both HIV-infected and uninfected patients. HHV-8 has a worldwide occurrence but infection rates vary according to a combination of geographic and behavioral risks. The main transmission route seems to be sexual, nevertheless, nasal secretions, saliva, blood, and organ graft have been proposed. HHV-8 was postulated as a new infectious agent for screening in blood donors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of antibodies against HHV-8 antigens in blood donors of South America. Serum samples from 2,470 blood donors from Argentina, Brazil, and Chile corresponding to five geographic regions were studied by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Seroprevalence rate was 3.7% (92/2,470; 95% CI 2.9-4.5) in the entire blood donor population distributed as follows: Argentina, 4.0% (Buenos Aires city, 4.3%; Bahia Blanca, 2.4%; and Córdoba, 4.0%), Campinas (Brazil), 2.8%; and Santiago de Chile, 3.0%. There was no difference (P>0.05) between men and women or age related, except in Brazil where positive cases were 30-49-year-old males. The present study, which includes different geographical areas of multiple countries from South America, has not been done before. The results show similar prevalence rates among the studied zones corresponding to low-prevalence regions. South America is a large sub-continent with a wide spectrum of population and geographical characteristics, thus, more HHV-8 prevalence studies should be necessary to establish possible regional differences. 相似文献

Gamma-aminobutyrate is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the vertebrate brain, and the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor subunit GABArho1delta51 is an alternatively spliced form of the GABArho1 receptor that was recently isolated from human retina cDNA libraries. The rho1delta51 receptor subunit lacks 17 amino acids in the extracellular N-terminal domain and, when expressed in Xenopus oocytes, forms functional homomeric GABA receptors. Unexpectedly, even after a such a big deletion, the fundamental properties of the deleted variant receptors are very similar to those of the complete GABArho1 receptors. For example, both types of receptors are bicuculline resistant, desensitize very little, and are negatively modulated by Zn2+ and positively modulated by La3+. In spite of such similarities, the GABArho1delta51 receptors are more sensitive to GABA, to the specific GABA(C) antagonist (1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-4-yl)methylphosphinic acid and to Zn2+, than the complete GABArho1 receptors. The GABArho1delta51 receptors extend the variety of inhibitory receptors in the retina. Their functional significance still remains to be determined. 相似文献

Many macrolides have been shown to affect the interaction between bacteria and various immune defense mechanisms, such as chemotaxis, accumulation, and bioactivity within phagocytic cells. The interaction of azithromycin with human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) was studied in vitro and compared with the interactions between other macrolides and PMNs. The opsonophagocytic killing ofStaphylococcus aureus was synergistically enhanced by azithromycin at concentrations below and above the minimal inhibitory concentration, with a reduction of up to 2.82 log10 cfu/ml with 2 mg/ml of azithromycin. Other macrolides were effective only at subinhibitory concentrations. The beneficial azithromycin-leukocyte interaction may explain azithromycin's efficacy against intracellular pathogens. 相似文献

Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) has recently been shown to be caused by mutations in the cathepsin C gene resulting in periodontal disease and palmoplantar keratosis. Thirteen different homozygous mutations have been characterised in PLS patients of different ethnic origin. In the present paper, a PLS patient is described who carries two novel mutations (706G>T and 872G>A) in the paternal and maternal chromosomes, respectively. This is the first compound patient described so far. In addition, a novel symptomless mutation (458C>T) in the cathepsin C gene is described in three homozygous individuals. Thus, not all mutations should be considered as a cause of disease, whether case studies or general population screening is performed. Another already described mutation that provoked the Haim-Munk syndrome (HMS) in Indian Jews has also been found to give rise to PLS in a Spanish family from Madrid. On the other hand, PLS patients are ameliorated by retinoids, which indicates that retinoids may be used as therapeutic agents in this immune system deficiency. 相似文献
