A supratentorial,hemorrhagic, intraparenchymal epidermoid cyst

Epidermoid cysts are slow growing benign tumors that represent < 1–2% of all intracranial tumors and rarely present as supratentorial, intraparenchymal masses. We present the first report of a supratentorial, hemorrhagic, intraparenchymal epidermoid cyst with its presentation, our operative approach, post-operative course, radiographic features, and a literature review.     

Study of the effects on DNA of two novel nucleoside derivatives synthesized as potential anti-HIV agents

The pursuit of antiviral active compounds against different classes of viruses, in particular HIV, HBV, and HTLV is an area of important and intense research. In the current study, two novel nucleoside derivatives belonging to a new class of isoxazolidine were successfully synthesized as potential anti-HIV agents by replacement of the furanose ring by a N,O-heterocyclic ring Both compounds were investigated for biological activity, namely, mutagenic and antimutagenic properties. Using Salmonella typhimurium strains TA97, TA100, and TA102, both compounds proved to be nonmutagenic, which may be considered an encouraging result to further elucidate other biological activities. Antimutagenic testing of the synthesized compounds revealed that they are active against the base-pair substitution mutagen sodium azide. However, they did not show any indication as antimutagenic agents against hydrogen peroxide and mitomycin C (oxidative mutagens) or against nitrophenylenediamine (a base-pair substitution and frameshift mutagen). Structure-activity relationship is also discussed. Testing these compounds as antiviral agents is highly recommended.     

Effects of two anaesthetic regimes, MS-222 and eugenol, on plasma biochemical profile in Barbus sharpeyi

For choosing an anaesthetic agent for a particular purpose, the different properties has been notified such as the convenience for use, safety for the fish, humans and the environment, effectiveness, physiological disturbances and its cost. Invariably, in any study with clove oil, it has been regarded as an effective and acceptable alternative to other anaesthetics. The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of two anaesthetic regimes, MS-222 and eugenol, on plasma biochemical parameters in Barbus sharpeyi. B. sharpeyi fingerlings (mean weight, 5?g?±?1; mean length, 6?cm?±?1) were exposed to MS-222 (100?ppm) and eugenol (40?ppm) for induction of anaesthesia. Blood samples were taken to verify the effects of these anaesthetics on plasma biochemical parameters may use as an indicator of stress at time 0 (designated for each tank at the time of exposure to anaesthetic agent), 0.5, 1, 2 and 24?h after exposure by caudal severance. Plasma biochemical parameters concentrations were not significantly affected in B. sharpeyi (p?<?0.05). These results were expected because the trials were conducted in short-term exposures. Ion balance appears to be altered only in long-term stressing condition. Based on the results of this study, eugenol appears to be a safe anesthetic for use in B. sharpeyi.

Invasive enteric infections in hospitalized patients with underlying strongyloidiasis

Disseminated strongyloidiasis is often associated with enteric bacterial infections. This study was undertaken to determine if enteric organisms caused extraintestinal infections in patients infected with Strongyloides stercoralis but without apparent dissemination. The medical records of hospitalized patients from central Kentucky with strongyloidiasis (1993-2003) were examined to determine the occurrence of extraintestinal infections with enteric organisms. Of 30 patients with S stercoralis, 16 had invasive infections, including sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, peritonitis, and endocarditis caused by enteric bacteria and Candida organisms. Infections were seen in 8 (62%) of 13 patients with disseminated strongyloidiasis and 8 (47%) of 17 with disease apparently limited to the gastrointestinal tract. Fifteen patients were receiving corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive therapy. Peripheral eosinophilia was seen in only 23% (7/30). Infection with S stercoralis, even without obvious dissemination, may predispose to invasive infections caused by enteric organisms. In Strongyloides-endemic areas, patients with invasive infections caused by enteric organisms should be examined for coinfection with S stercoralis.     

Treatment of painful bony metastases with Samarium 153-EDTMP in prostate carcinoma

THE OBJECTIVE of this work is to evaluate a new therapy, the metabolic radiotherapy to the 153Samarium-EDTMP, of recent introduction in Tunisia, in the painful bony metastasis treatment observed at the patients affected of cancer of the prostate. METHODS: It is about a retrospective survey with a receding of 40 months, achieved through 45 files of patients having benefited all of this new treatment for painful bony metastases in relation with a prostatic adenocarcinoma and collected by three centers of Nuclear Medicine of the capital: the institute Salah Azaiez (state-controlled), the Center CERU (deprives) and the Military hospital (HMPIT). RESULTS: We tried to appreciate essentially four parameters: the therapeutic efficiency, the factors influencing the answer in the treatment, the toxicity of the treatment and the sources of failure. We observed a positive answer in 92,1% of the cases, this answer was complete in 36,5% of the cases. The results gotten after multiple administrations show that the cures could be repeated with results comparable to those of the first cure. The therapeutic efficiency is at least equivalent to those of the other therapeutic means, with nearly non-existent secondary effects. The only toxicity is of hematological order; it is the most often moderate and reversible with a complete recuperation at the end of 8 weeks. Besides, the effect on the pain came with an improvement of the quality of life of the patients treaties. CONCLUSION: Its precocious introduction in the taken in charge of the metastatic patients, would allow them to benefit better from its efficiency, simplicity and weak toxicity and therefore to enjoy a better quality of life.
