X-Ray Diagnosis of Flat Type Mucosal Carcinoma of the Stomach

The mucosal pattern of the associated lIb on double contrastimages was analyzed in order to define the characteristics ofminimal cancer invasion. The mucosal surface of the IIb lesionpresents an irregular outlined, uneven sized nodular patternfrequently associated with tiny erosions or superficial destructivechanges. These minute and delicate abnormalities are demonstratedonly on high quality double contrast images. Three typical casesare presented.     

A Case of Turner's Syndrome with Crohn's Disease

Abstract: A case of Crohn's disease that developed during the follow-up of Turner's syndrome is presented in this paper, together with references to the literature. This case had a mosaic pattern (45X46Xi (Xq)) in chromosomal analysis and BW52, DR2 in HLA typing with autoantibodies.     

Effects of thioamide substitution for the enkephalin conformation

The crystals of Boc-Tyr-Gly-Gly-PheΨ[CSNH]Leu-OBzl monohydrate (C₄₀H₅₁N₅O₈S H₂O), a monothionated Leu-enkephalin analogue, were obtained with space group P2₁ a = 12.616(3), b= 9.347(2), c= 18.548(5) Å, β= 96.31(4)°. The structure was elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis, and refined to the R value of 0.091 for the observed 3294 reflections. Two antiparallel molecules related by a pseudo twofold symmetry were stabilized to each other by four intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The molecular conformation was bent at the Phe residue, and the extended moiety of the Tyr-Gly-Gly fragment was almost perpendicular to that of the Phe-Leu residues. Consequently the molecule, as a whole, formed an L-shape conformation with a slightly left-handed helicity.     

Studies on the Prevalence of Complicated Atrial Arrhythmias, Flutter, and Fibrillation in Patients with Reciprocating Supraventricular Tachycardia Before and After Successful Catheter Ablation

Atrial flutter and AF are complications in approximately 30% of cases of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT)-indicated catheter ablation, and it is of interest to determine if therapeutic modification for PSVT would eliminate combined atrial tachyarrhythmia like atrial flutter and AF. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and the risk of atrial tachyarrhythmias after catheter ablation of PSVT. A total of 152 patients (age range 12-74, mean 41 +/- 17 years) with accessory pathway (n = 106) and/or dual atrioventricular nodal conduction (n = 46) were enrolled in a 2-year follow-up program after successful catheter ablation. Possible risks on clinical background (age, sex, PSVT duration, hemodynamic instability during attacks), premature atrial contraction (PACs) on Holter monitoring, echocardiographic left atrial size, and electrophysiological property (insertion site, conduction type, effective refractory period) were evaluated. Atrial flutter and AF were complications in 53 (35%) of the subjects, who were elderly and had a longer PSVT history with a larger left atrial dimension and frequent PACs; however, the electrophysiological properties were similar. After a 2-year follow-up period 36 (24%) of the patients still exhibited PAC runs, including 13 (9%) with atrial flutter and AF, each one of whom were complicated with nonlethal cerebral thromboembolism and congestive heart failure. Multiplelogistic-regression analysis revealed that advanced age (> or = 41 years, P = 0.0152) and frequent PACs (> or = 1% of total daily QRS counts, P = 0.0426) on Holter monitoring are the risk factors of PAC runs and/or atrial flutter and AF. In conclusion, successful ablation for PSVT is thought to be beneficial for preventing atrial flutter and AF. However, careful follow-up to monitor for the recurrence and atrial flutter and AF related complications, especially in patients of solitary atrial flutter and AF without reciprocating tachycardia and with frequent PAC.     

Modification of spontaneous renal lesion of APA hamsters by streptozotocin-induced diabetes

Syrian hamsters of the APA strain (APA hamsters) develop spontaneous mesangial thickening in the renal glomeruli from an early age. They also develop focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSG) at and after 6 months of age. In this study, histopathological, immunohistochemical and lectin histochemical examinations were conducted to clarify the modification of the spontaneous renal lesions of APA hamsters by streptozotocin(SZ)-induced diabetes. Histopathological analysis revealed that the expansion of the mesangial region was more prominent and the thickening of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) was weaker in SZ-treated animals than in non-treated ones. Immunohistochemical analysis suggested that type IV collagen and laminin were involved in the expansion of the mesangial region and thickening of the GBM. In lectin histochemical analysis, podocytes, capillary endothelial cells, GBM and a part of mesangial region of SZ-treated animals were positive for RCA₁₂₀ and GSL-I with neuraminidase-pretreatment although they were negative for these lectins in non-treated animals. These results suggest that the spontaneous glomerular lesion of APA hamsters is modified qualitatively and quantitatively by SZ-induced diabetes.
