Itraconazole activity against fungal germination

Itraconazole was found to be superior to ketoconazole in its antifungal activity in vitro against Hyphomycetes and Candida. In particular, complete inhibition of germination of Candida albicans and Aspergillus spp. by a lower dose of itraconazole can explain the better activity in vivo of this drug.     

Coronary artery bypass grafting in the awake patient: combined thoracic epidural and lumbar subarachnoid block.

High thoracic epidural anaesthesia has recently been proposed to perform surgical revascularisation with arterial grafts in awake patients. However, in high-risk patients with associated co-morbidity it is not always possible to perform complete arterial revascularisation. A technique which combines thoracic epidural and selective lumbar subarachnoid block is described, allowing harvesting of saphenous vein and complete surgical revascularisation in awake patients.     

Spirituality and health in the curricula of medical schools in Brazil

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: According to recent surveys, 59 % of British medical schools and 90 % of US medical schools have courses or content on spirituality and health (S/H). There is little research, however, on the teaching of S/H in medical schools in other countries, such as those in Latin America, Asia, Australia and Africa. The present study seeks to investigate the current status of teaching on S/H in Brazilian medical schools. METHODS: All medical schools in Brazil (private and public) were selected for evaluation, were contacted by email and phone, and were administered a questionnaire. The questionnaire, sent by e-mail, asked medical school directors/deans about any S/H courses that were taught, details about those courses, S/H lectures or seminars, importance of teaching this subject for medical school directors, and medical schools characteristics. RESULTS: A total of 86 out of 180 (47.7 %) medical schools responded. Results indicated that 10.4 % of Brazilian Medical Schools have a dedicated S/H courses and 40.5 % have courses or content on spirituality and health. Only two medical schools have S/H courses that involve hands-on training and three schools have S/H courses that teach how to conduct a spiritual history. The majority of medical directors (54 %) believe that S/H is important to teach in their schools. CONCLUSION: Few Brazilian medical schools have courses dealing specifically with S/H and less than half provide some form of teaching on the subject. Unfortunately, there is no standard curriculum on S/H. Nevertheless, the majority of medical directors believe this issue is an important subject that should be taught.     

Letter to the editors regarding the paper: Prognostic factors in HIV-positive patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a Peruvian experience

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) is a neoplasm associated with a group of malignancies called AIDs-Defining Malignancies (ADMs) in Human-Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) -patients. Similar to the case of NHL in Latin America, particularly in Peru, the amount of research done on others ADMs is limited, especially in the case of Kaposi’s Sarcoma (KS). Prior investigations have talked about the great potential risk that represents this illness in latin american population, but topics as prognosis factors are yet to be well defined. In this letter, we address the importance of investigation in this area and include previously reported data that may enlighten the current national standpoint.     

Assessment of the Relative Catch Performance of a Surrounding Net without the Purse Line as an Alternative to a Traditional Boat Seine in Small-Scale Fisheries

The catch performance of a traditional Ligurian boat seine, which is not in line with the European Union regulation, was compared with an experimental surrounding net without the purse line as a potential legal alternative. The relative catch performance between the two gear types was assessed using a new catch comparison method requiring neither paired data collection nor equal number of hauls with the two gears. The comparison was based on the catches of the three species that comprise the bulk of the catch in traditional Ligurian boat seine fisheries: Bogue Boops boops, Saddle Bream Oblada melanura, and Blotched Picarel Spicara maena. The experimental gear exhibited poor catch efficiency for all three species, since it was estimated that the catches would only be 2, 64, and 6%, respectively, of those with the boat seine. For both Bogue and Blotched Picarel these reductions in catch performance were found to be highly significant proving that the experimental surrounding net is not a viable solution to replace the traditional boat seine.

Auditory environmental cells and visual fixation effect in area 8B of macaque monkey

Area 8B may be treated as part of either the prefrontal cortex or the premotor cortex. Previous investigations showed an involvement of area 8B in both eye and ear motor control and in auditory perception. In this report, we studied 139 neurons in three macaque monkeys of these, 32 neurons showed an activity related to environmental auditory stimuli. Fifteen cells with auditory characteristics (15/32) presented a firing discharge inhibited during the execution of visual fixation. The remaining 107 units presented complex or indefinable behaviour. The presence of auditory environmental cells which activity is related prevalently to the voice of persons (researchers) suggests that area 8B may be an area involved in auditory cross-modal association, in natural behaviour. The inhibitory effects during visual fixation suggest that area 8B is part of the inhibitory network preventing the gaze shift in relation to an auditory stimulus. This may be the consequence of the engagement of attention during fixation that may affect the auditory perception. Both aspects indicate that area 8B is involved in high cognitive processes in auditory and orienting processes.We dedicate this paper to Prof. Massimo Matelli, an Italian Neuroanatomist who devoted his life to scientific research.
