Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood and has been designated a public health problem due to the increase in its prevalence in recent decades, the amount of health service expenditure it absorbs and an absence of consensus about its etiology. The relationships among psychosocial factors and the occurrence, symptomatology, and severity of asthma have recently been considered. There is still controversy about the association between asthma and a child's mental health, since the pathways through which this relationship is established are complex and not well researched. This study aims to investigate whether behavior problems are associated with the prevalence of asthma symptoms in a large urban center in Latin America.
Methods
It is a cross-section study of 869 children between 6 and 12 years old, residents of Salvador, Brazil. The International Study of Allergy and Asthma in Childhood (ISAAC) instrument was used to evaluate prevalence of asthma symptoms. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was employed to evaluate behavioral problems.
Results
19.26% (n = 212) of the children presented symptoms of asthma. 35% were classified as having clinical behavioral problems. Poisson's robust regression model demonstrated a statistically significant association between the presence of behavioral problems and asthma symptoms occurrence (PR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.10-1.85).
Conclusion
These results suggest an association between behavioral problems and pediatric asthma, and support the inclusion of mental health care in the provision of services for asthma morbidity. 相似文献
Background: This study histomorphometrically analyzes the influence of platelet‐rich plasma (PRP), low‐level laser therapy (LLLT), or their combination on the healing of periodontal fenestration defects (PFDs) in rats. Methods: PFDs were surgically created in the mandibles of 80 rats. The animals were randomly divided into four groups: 1) C (control) and 2) PRP, defects were filled with blood clot or PRP, respectively; 3) LLLT and 4) PRP/LLLT, defects received laser irradiation, were filled with blood clot or PRP, respectively, and then irradiated again. Animals were euthanized at either 10 or 30 days post‐surgery. Percentage of new bone (NB), density of newly formed bone (DNB), new cementum (NC), and extension of remaining defect (ERD) were histomorphometrically evaluated. Data were statistically analyzed (analysis of variance; Tukey test, P <0.05). Results: At 10 days, group PRP presented ERD significantly lower than group C. At 30 days, group PRP presented NB and DNB significantly greater than group C. Groups LLLT, PRP, and PRP/LLLT showed significant NC formation at 30 days, with collagen fibers inserted obliquely or perpendicularly to the root surface. NC formation was not observed in any group C specimen. Conclusions: LLLT, PRP, or their combination all promoted NC formation with a functional periodontal ligament. The combination PRP/LLLT did not show additional positive effects compared to the use of either therapy alone. 相似文献
Background: Very limited information is available from in vivo studies about whether smoking and/or nicotine affect gingival tissues in the absence of plaque. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the systemic administration of nicotine in the proliferation and counting of fibroblast‐like cells in the gingival tissue of rats. Methods: Thirty adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into two groups to receive subcutaneous injections of a saline solution (control group = group C) or nicotine solution (group N; 3 mg/kg) twice a day. The animals were euthanized 37, 44, or 51 days after the first subcutaneous injection. Specimens were routinely processed for serial histologic sections. Five fields of view in the connective tissue adjacent to the gingival epithelium and above the alveolar bone crest of the maxillary first molar were selected for the counting of fibroblast‐like cells. Data were statistically analyzed (P <0.05). Results: The intergroup analysis detected a lower number of fibroblast‐like cells in group N compared to group C on days 37 (2.65 ± 1.41 and 6.67 ± 3.25, respectively), 44 (2.70 ± 1.84 and 8.57 ± 2.37, respectively), and 51 (2.09 ± 1.41 and 7.49 ± 2.60, respectively) (P <0.05). The quantification of fibroblast‐like cells showed no significant difference (P >0.05) in the intragroup analysis of control and nicotine throughout experimental periods. In the intergroup analysis, group N had reduced proliferating cell nuclear antigen–positive fibroblasts compared to group C in all periods (P <0.05). Conclusion: The daily systemic administration of nicotine negatively affected, in vivo, the number and proliferation of fibroblast‐like cells in the gingival tissue of rats. 相似文献
This study evaluated the repair process after delayed replantation of rat teeth, using calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) mixed with camphorated p-monochlorophenol (CMCP), chlorhexidine 2% (CHX), or saline as temporary root canal dressing to prevent and/or control inflammatory radicular resorption. Thirty Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinos) had their right upper incisor extracted, which was bench-dried for 60 minutes. The dental papilla, the enamel organ, the dental pulp, and the periodontal ligament were removed. The teeth were immersed in 2% acidulated-phosphate sodium fluoride solution for 10 minutes. The root canals were dried with absorbent paper cones and divided into 3 groups of 10 animals according to root canal dressing used: group 1: Ca(OH)2 + saline, group 2: Ca(OH)2 + CMCP, and group 3: Ca(OH)2 + CHX 2%. Before replanting, the teeth sockets were irrigated with saline. Histological analysis revealed the presence of inflammatory resorption, replacement resorption, and ankylosis in all 3 groups. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between group 3 and the other groups. The use of Ca(OH)2 mixed with CMCP or CHX did not show an advantage over the use of Ca(OH)2 mixed with saline in preventing and/or controlling inflammatory resorption in delayed replantation of rat teeth. 相似文献
Background: Knowledge of paretic upper limb (UL) use in the actual environment is crucial for defining treatment strategies that are likely to enhance performance.
Objective: To quantify the hand function and type of grasp performed in the actual environment following stroke and determine if any differences in hand use are dependent on the degree of motor impairment.
Method: This cross-sectional study enrolled 41 participants with chronic hemiparesis classified as having either mild (11), moderate (20), or severe (10) UL impairment. A behavioral map was used while observing hand use over the 4-h experimental period, during which we checked: activity- unimanual, bimanual or non-task-related; hand function- stabilization, manipulation, reach-to-grasp, gesture, support or push; and type of grasp- digital or whole-hand.
Results: Participants with severe impairment did not use the paretic UL spontaneously; analyzing the moderate and mild subgroup together, the predominant UL hand functions were stabilization and manipulation, the paretic UL performs the stabilization function using the whole-hand more frequently (71.2%) than digital (28.8%) grasp. In the subgroup analysis, the paretic and non-paretic UL in the moderate and the paretic UL in the mild subgroup perform the whole-hand stabilization more frequently than digital. Digital grasp is more accomplished by the non-paretic UL in reach-to-grasp hand function, particularly in the mild subgroup.
Conclusion: The paretic UL is predominantly employed for stabilization function using a whole-hand grasp. The type of grasp in the actual environment is affected by motor impairment, and greater motor impairment leads to the performance of less complex tasks. 相似文献
ObjectiveTonic immobility is a defensive reaction occurring under extreme life threats. Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) reporting peritraumatic tonic immobility show the most severe symptoms and a poorer response to treatment. This study investigated the predictive value of tonic immobility for posttraumatic stress symptoms in a non-clinical sample.MethodsOne hundred and ninety-eight college students exposed to various life threatening events were selected to participate. The Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist – Civilian Version (PCL-C) and tonic immobility questions were used. Linear regression models were fitted to investigate the association between peritraumatic tonic immobility and PCL-C scores. Peritraumatic dissociation, peritraumatic panic reactions, negative affect, gender, type of trauma, and time since trauma were considered as confounding variables.ResultsWe found significant association between peritraumatic tonic immobility and PTSD symptoms in a non-clinical sample exposed to various traumas, even after regression controlled for confounding variables (β = 1.99, p = 0.017).ConclusionsThis automatic reaction under extreme life threatening stress, although adaptive for defense, may have pathological consequences as implied by its association with PTSD symptoms. 相似文献
The manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) Ala16Val single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) has shown to be associated to risk factors of vascular diseases. Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) plays an essential role in the plasticity and neuronal regeneration of the brain after vascular injuries. However, little is known about interaction between MnSOD Ala16Val SNP on stroke, a frequent neurologic disease that involves various interacting pathways, such as vascular dysfunctions, inflammation, and neurotrophic factors. In this sense, the objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between MnSOD Ala16Val SNP with BDNF levels on stroke and also its influence on nitrosative stress, inflammatory, apoptotic, and DNA damage parameters. For this, 88 subjects were investigated, 44 subjects poststroke and 44 healthy controls. Questionnaires were applied to clinical characteristics and after laboratorial exams were collected. We analyzed levels of oxidative/nitrosative stress, inflammatory, apoptotic, and DNA damage markers. We showed a higher proportion of VV genotype in poststroke as compared to healthy subjects. Nitrite/nitrate, Tumor Necrosis Factor-α, Caspase 3 (CASP 3) and 8 (CASP 8) activation, Acethylcholinesterase (AChE), and Picogreen levels were higher in VV poststroke group, as well as BDNF and ACh levels were lower in VV and AV poststroke. We may suggest that V allele carries a worse outcome profile after stroke, relating to nitrosative stress, inflammatory, and apoptotic response. These events associated to a BDNF reduction, probably, contribute to the appearance or reincidence of stroke. 相似文献
Language alterations in Huntington's disease (HD) are reported, but their nature and correlation with other cognitive impairments are still under investigation. This study aimed to characterize the language disturbances in HD and to correlate them to motor and cognitive aspects of the disease. We studied 23 HD patients and 23 controls, matched for age and schooling, using the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination, Boston Naming Test, the Token Test, Animal fluency, Action fluency, FAS-COWA, the Symbol Digit Modalities Test, the Stroop Test and the Hooper Visual Organization Test (HVOT). HD patients performed poorer in verbal fluency (p<0.0001), oral comprehension (p<0.0001), repetition (p<0.0001), oral agility (p<0.0001), reading comprehension (p=0.034) and narrative writing (p<0.0001). There was a moderate correlation between the Expressive Component and Language Competency Indexes and the HVOT (r=0.519, p=0.011 and r=0.450, p=0.031, respectively). Language alterations in HD seem to reflect a derangement in both frontostriatal and frontotemporal regions. 相似文献
