Detection of Philadelphia Chromosome in Chronic Neutrophilic Leukemia

Chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL) is a rare myeloproliferativedisorder, differentiated from chronic myelogenous leukemia byseveral features. A case of CNL which was found by long-termculture to involve the Philadelphia chromosome is reported.     

Attitudes of medical students towards persons with mental disorders: A comparative study between Japan and Thailand

This study was conducted at three universities, two in Japan and one in Thailand, in order to elucidate the effects of medical education, especially with regard to contact experience on medical students' attitudes toward persons with mental disorders. Questionnaires, which included the Attitudes Towards Disabled Persons Scale (ATDP) and the Contact with Disabled Persons Scale (CDP), were distributed to 1st year students prior to the commencement of their medicine/psychiatry studies and distributed to 6th (or 5th) year students who had completed their psychiatric curriculum. The ATDP scores were lower for 6th year students at all universities, suggesting that post-education students had a more unfavorable attitude than pre-education students. Thai students indicated more unfavorable attitudes than did the Japanese students. Three factors were extracted from the ATDP scale and termed: negation of character, negation of ability and affirmation of normality. Four factors from the CDP scale were extracted and labeled intimate contact experience, ordinary contact experience, unpleasant contact experience and pleasant contact experience. Greater negative attitudes of post-education students than pre-education students were thought to attribute mainly to an increase in factor score of negation of ability and this result was correlated with an increase in factor score of ordinary contact experience in post-education students. Of the three ATDP factor scores, the higher score of Thai students for negation of character contributed to their overall unfavorable attitude scores. The cross-national similarities and differences of students' attitudes towards and contact experience with mentally disordered persons were discussed from the viewpoint of medical education.     

Multiple glomus tumours: successful treatment with electron beam irradiation

A case is reported of a 23-year-old male with multiple glomus tumours that showed marked involution after he had electron beam therapy.     

Growing cavernous haemangioma of the liver: 11-fold increase in volume in a decade

A 57 year old Japanese male was incidentally found to have a 7.5 cm diameter hepatic haemangioma. Eleven years later he was operated on because the haemangioma had grown into a 17 cm mass causing upper abdominal fullness. Volumetry on computerized tomograms disclosed that the haemangioma had grown from 123 cm3 to 1343 cm3 in volume. Quantitative documentation on growing hepatic haemangioma has been rare.     

Enhanced rectal absorption of itazigrel formulated with polysorbate 80 micelle vehicle in rat: role of co-administered esterase

Abstract— We investigated the effect of esterase on rectal absorption in the rat of itazigrel using polysorbate 80 (PS-80) micelle as a vehicle to overcome the poor aqueous solubility of itazigrel. The itazigrel formulation prepared with PS-80 increased the absorption compared with a 0·25% carmellose sodium suspension, probably by supplying the itazigrel solute to keep a high concentration at the epithelial surface. When esterase was co-administered with the formulations containing PS-80, the absorption of itazigrel from rat rectum was accelerated further, by rapid release of itazigrel from the micelle vehicle after enzymatic degradation of the PS-80 micelle.     

Involvement of suppressor cells induced with membrane fractions of trypanosomes in immunosuppression of trypanosomiasis

We showed that infection with Trypanosoma congolense in mice led to suppression of listeria-induced delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH). Mice were pre-treated with irradiated T. evansi, which caused rapid and effective suppression of DTH. A membrane fraction obtained by homogenizing T. evansi variant in a hypotonic buffer solution and centrifuging it at 150,000g produced suppression of listeria-induced DTH when injected i.p. into mice as early as 1 day before listeria immunization. Furthermore, we demonstrated by an adoptive transfer system that the suppressor cells involved in this suppression had developed in the spleen and that the activity of the splenic suppressor cells was due to the presence of a macrophage population.     

养阴活血方对转基因盐皮质激素受体过度表达小鼠模型心室重塑的影响

目的观察养阴活血方对转基因(TG)盐皮质激素受体(MR)过度表达小鼠模型心室重塑的影响。方法将小鼠分为3组,即雄性非转基因小鼠组(NTG组)、雄性转基因小鼠组(TG组)和雄性转基因小鼠加中药组(TG K组),心肌梗死造模后观察心脏重量和心脏重量/体重比、脑钠肽(BNP)的mRNA表达、生存率和心脏病理切片。结果养阴活血方干预治疗后,TG K组心脏重量和心脏重量/体重比与TG组比较差异均有显著性意义(P<0.05),但与NTG组比较,差异无显著性意义(P>0.05);TG K组的BNPmRNA较TG组表达减弱(P<0.05),较NTG组差异无显著性意义(P>0.05);TG K组生存率高于TG组(P<0.05),与NTG组比较差异无显著性意义(P>0.05);心脏病理切片显示,TG组心脏纤维化明显,TG K组心脏纤维化减轻,而NTG组最轻。结论养阴活血方可减轻雄性TGMR心肌梗死小鼠模型的心室重塑。
