Design Service Life of RC Structures with Self-Healing Behaviour to Increase Infrastructure Carbon Savings

Corrosion of reinforced concrete (RC) structures costs the UK GBP 23b annually and is one of the main durability problems contributing to the development of rust, spalling, cracking, delamination, and structural deterioration. This paper intends to demonstrate the benefit of using tailored self-healing bacteria-based concrete for RC corrosion minimisation and service life increase. The purpose was to evaluate the enhancement in the lifespan of the structure exposed to a harsh marine microenvironment by utilising a probabilistic performance-based method. Comparison is made with the performance of a commercially available solution and in terms of embodied carbon impact. Three different concretes, using CEM I 52.5N, CEM II/A-D, and CEM III/A, were tested with and without an iron-respiring bioproduct (BIO) and an added admixture corrosion inhibitor (AACI). Results show that bioproduct significantly contributes to service life increase of RC structures with CEMIII/A. The repair solution with self-healing behaviour not only increases RC service life, but also enables us to decrease the required cover thickness from 60 mm to 50 mm in an XS2 chloride environment. In both XS2 and XS3 environments, a comparison of CEMIII/A+BIO and CEMII/A-D+AACI concrete shows the benefit of using bioproduct in corrosion inhibition context, besides contributing to an embodied carbon reduction of more than 20%.     

An objective approach to the personality and environment in homosexuality

Conclusions Homosexuality is no disease entity. It is rather a manifestation of poor personality integration and from the etiological standpoint should be considered in a similar category to excessive masturbation and chronic alcoholism. Homosexuality becomes desirable or necessary as an outlet for libidinous drives in certain individuals, largely because of a combination of adverse psychogenic and environmental forces. These forces have multitudinous ramifications and interrelationships which vary in any individual case.     

Workplace bullying and risk of suicide and suicide attempts: A register-based prospective cohort study of 98 330 participants in Denmark

ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to analyze whether individuals reporting exposure to workplace bullying had a higher risk of suicidal behavior, including both suicide attempt and death by suicide, than those not reporting such exposure.MethodsUsing a prospective cohort study design, we linked data from nine Danish questionnaire-based surveys (2004–2014) to national registers up to 31 December 2016. Exposure to workplace bullying was measured by a single item. Suicide attempts were identified in hospital registers and death by suicide in the Cause of Death Register. Among participants with no previous suicide attempts, we estimated hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), adjusting for sex, age, marital status, socioeconomic status, and history of psychiatric morbidity.ResultsThe sample consisted of 98 330 participants (713 798 person-years), 63.6% were women, and the mean age was 44.5 years. Of these participants, 10 259 (10.4%) reported workplace bullying. During a mean follow-up of 7.3 years, we observed 184 cases of suicidal behavior, including 145 suicide attempts, 35 deaths by suicide and 4 cases that died by suicide after surviving a suicide attempt. The fully-adjusted HR for the association between workplace bullying and suicidal behavior was 1.65 (95% CI 1.06–2.58). The HR for suicide attempts and death by suicide were 1.65 (1.09–2.50) and 2.08 (0.82–5.27), respectively. Analyses stratified by sex showed a statistically significant association between workplace bullying and suicidal behavior among men but not women.ConclusionsThe results suggest that exposure to workplace bullying is associated with an elevated risk of suicidal behavior among men.     

Insight opinion to surgically treated metastatic bone disease: Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Skeletal Metastasis Registry report of 1195 operated skeletal metastasis

The number of cancer patients living with metastatic disease is growing. The increased survival has led to an increase in the number of cancer-induced complications, such as pathologic fractures due to bone metastases. Surgery is most commonly needed for mechanical complications, such as fractures and intractable pain. We determined survival, disease free interval and complications in surgically treated bone metastasis. Data were collected from the Scandinavian Skeletal Metastasis Registry for patients with extremity skeletal metastases surgically treated at eight major Scandinavian referral centres between 1999 and 2009 covering a total of 1195 skeletal metastases in 1107 patients. Primary breast, prostate, renal, lung, and myeloma tumors make up 78% of the tumors. Number of complications is tolerable and is affected by methods of surgery as well as preoperative radiation therapy. Overall 1-year patient survival was 36%; however, mean survival was influenced by the primary tumor type and the presence of additional visceral metastases. Patients with impending fracture had more systemic complications than those with complete fracture. Although surgery is usually only a palliative treatment, patients can survive for years after surgery. We developed a simple, useful and reliable scoring system to predict survival among these patients. This scoring system gives good aid in predicting the prognosis when selecting the surgical method. While it is important to avoid unnecessary operations, operating when necessary can provide benefit.
