Leukocyte rolling and emigration in response to inflammatory stimuli appears to involve both E-selectin- and P-selectin-dependent adhesion, which suggests that these molecules have overlapping functions. To clarify their relative contributions in chronic inflammation, we examined delayed-type contact hypersensitivity (DTH) responses in P- selectin, E-selectin, and E-/P-selectin-deficient mice. Oxazolone- induced increases in ear thickness and ear weight were equivalent in wild-type mice and in P-selectin and E-selectin mutants, but were significantly reduced in E-/P-selectin mutants. The number and area of microabscesses on the ears of E-/P-deficient mice were decreased by 72% and 93%, and the number of leukocytes invading the subdermal ear tissue was reduced. T cells from E-/P-deficient mice transferred oxazolone reactivity into naive wild-type mice. However, when donor T cells from wild-type mice were transferred into E-/P-selectin-deficient mice, the DTH response was significantly impaired. These results show that leukocyte recruitment into a subacute inflammatory reaction can occur when either P-selectin or E-selectin is present, but is significantly reduced when both selectins are absent. Both P- and E-selectin are likely to play important roles in the development and maintenance of inflammatory diseases.  相似文献

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: A number of recent scientific publications suggest that patients suffering from whiplash-associated disorders (WADs) exhibit sensorimotor deficits in the control of head and neck movements. PURPOSE: The main objective of the present study was to evaluate if subjects with WADs can produce isometric neck extension and flexion forces with precision, variability, and a mode of control similar to the values of healthy subjects. STUDY DESIGN: A control group study with repeated measures. PATIENT SAMPLES: Neck force production parameters and neuromuscular control were measured in 17 whiplash and 14 control subjects. The experimental group included subjects who had a history of persistent neck pain or disability after a motor vehicle accident. OUTCOME MEASURES: Pain levels were assessed on a standard 100-mm visual analog pain scale at the beginning and end of the experiment. Each whiplash subject completed the neck disability index and the short-form 36 health survey (SF-36) questionnaire before the experiment. METHODS: All subjects were asked to exert flexion and extension forces against a fixed head harness. Kinetic variables included time to peak force, time to peak force variability, peak force variability, and absolute error in peak force. Surface electrodes were applied bilaterally over the sternocleidomastoideus and paraspinal muscles. Electromyography (EMG)-dependent variables included EMG burst duration and amplitude using numerical integrated techniques. RESULTS: The average time to peak force was significantly longer for whiplash subjects than for the healthy controls. A significant increase in peak force variability was also observed in the whiplash group, and no group differences were noted for absolute error. Heightened muscular activity was seen in both paraspinal muscles, even though it only reached statistical significance for the left paraspinal muscle. CONCLUSION: Our results show that the whiplash subjects involved in the study were able to produce isometric forces with spatial precision similar to healthy controls using a motor strategy in which the time to peak force is increased. This trade-off between spatial precision and time to peak force probably reflects an adaptation aimed at limiting pain and further injuries.  相似文献

Background:

Lateral closed wedge (LCW) osteotomy is a commonly accepted method for the correction of the cubitus varus deformity. The fixation of osteotomy is required to prevent loss of correction achieved. The fixation of the osteotomy by the two screw and figure of eight wire is not stable enough to maintain the correction achieved during surgery. In this prospective study we supplemented the fixation by Kirschner''s (K-) wires for stable fixation and evaluated the results.

Materials and Methods:

Twenty-one cases of the cubitus varus deformity following supracondylar fractures of the humerus were operated by LCW osteotomy during February 2001 to June 2006. The mean age of the patients at the time of corrective surgery was 8.5 years (range 6.6-14 years). The osteotomy was fixed by two screws with figure of eight tension band wire between them and the fixation was supplemented by passing two to three K-wires from the lateral condyle engaging the proximal medial cortex through the osteotomy site.

Result:

The mean follow-up period was 2.5 years (range seven months to 3.4 years). The results were assessed as per Morrey criteria. Eighteen cases showed excellent results and three cases showed good results. Two cases had superficial pin tract infection.

Conclusion:

The additional fixation by K wires controls rotational forces effectively besides angulation and translation forces and maintains the correction achieved peroperatively.  相似文献
