Antibody to feline oncornavirus-associated cell membrane antigen in neonatal cats

Antibodies to a feline oncornavirus-associated cell membrane antigen have been found in newborn kittens whose mothers had previously nursed litters of kittens injected with feline leukemia virus (FeLV). These antibodies, which were apparently obtained passively from the mother, seem to protect the kittens from the development of progressive tumors following the injection of various amounts of feline sarcoma virus (FSV). That these mothers were apparently able to passively transmit immunity suggests that they became infected with FeLV in a horizontal manner while nursing previous litters and resisted the development of progressive tumors, but mounted an immune response which resulted in the production of humoral antibody. It also suggests that some degree of cross-protection exists in vivo between the feline leukemia and sarcoma viruses used in this study.     

Application of image-guided surface coil P-31 MR spectroscopy to human liver, heart, and kidney

Localized phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy in humans has previously been accomplished with surface coils by means of depth-resolved surface coil spectroscopy or rotating frame experiments, in which the extent of tissue sampled critically depends on surface coil placement. The authors' goal was to modify the surface coil image-selected in vivo spectroscopy (ISIS) experiment to accomplish three-dimensional volume selection through application of selective pulses in the presence of B0 gradients. Advantages of ISIS include the ability to use proton images to define the volume of interest (VOI) and reduced dependence on exact positioning of the surface coil. However, rapid replication of the surface coil ISIS experiment can cause spectral contamination from signals originating outside the VOI. A modified version of the ISIS experiment was developed to alleviate contamination under conditions of rapid replication. Applications of localized P-31 MR spectroscopy for observation of high-energy phosphorus metabolites are presented in human liver, heart, and transplanted and normal kidney.     

Angiomyolipoma presenting as fever of unknown origin

A case of renal angiomyolipoma presenting as fever of unknown origin unassociated with tuberous sclerosis is described. Important features include (1) infrequent occurrence in absence of tuberous sclerosis, (2) angiographic appearance suggesting neoplasm, (3) absence of documented malignant tissue transformation, and (4) presenting symptoms most frequently included abdominal pains, palpable flank mass and hematuria. Surgical removal of the lesion in this instance was associated with cessation of fever.
