The objective of this study was to compare and contrast the cellular heterogeneity of ovine intervertebral disc (IVD) annulus fibrosus (AF) and nucleus pulposus (NP) cells, synovial fibroblasts (SFs) and articular chondrocytes (ACs) grown in monolayer and alginate bead culture. Phase contrast microscopy of the monolayers indicated that the SF and AF cells, and the AC and NP cells had similar morphologies. Immunolocalisation of type I, II and VI collagen epitopes in the monolayers, however, demonstrated distinct quantitative and relative differences between the SF and AF, and the AC and NP cells. Immunolocalisation of bead-incorporated proteoglycans (PGs) also demonstrated quantitative and qualitative differences between the SF and AF cells. Quantitation of (35)S-bead PGs indicated that the AF cells synthesised significantly higher PG levels than the SFs, and AC cells synthesised significantly higher PG levels than the NP cells. These data were also consistent with the relative metabolic activities and cellular viabilities displayed by each cell type in bead culture. AF cells shared morphological traits with SFs in monolayer, but displayed distinctly different characteristics in bead culture. Similarly, NP cells shared similarities with ACs in monolayer and bead culture, but overall were less metabolically active. This report explores how vulnerability to HIV/AIDS applies to women in the reproductive age range living in the slum areas of Delhi and Hyderabad. The paper is based on a qualitative study of AIDS awareness levels conducted during the summer of 2006. It offers insightful narratives from a sample of 32 women, providing an in depth view of their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS due to their precarious socioeconomic conditions and low AIDS awareness. It was observed that both glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activities were significantly increased in different tissues of both rats and guinea pigs, during a short period of altitude exposure, as well as in acclimatized animals. Interestingly, it was found that oral administration of glucose showed no such significant change at either sea level or in a hypoxic condition. Studies on the activity of GOT and GPT in different tissues of normal guinea pigs showed a little change in liver and brain during short periods of exposure. Kidney and heart showed a significant increase in GOT activity without any change in GPT activity. Increased activities were observed in all the tissues of the acclimatized animals. Of both unexposed and acclimatized animals, there was no change in the enzyme of unexposed and acclimatized animals except in heart following injection of thyroxine (16 micrograms X kg-1), but the enzyme activities were most pronounced in scorbutic animals. 相似文献

Perioperative homologous blood transfusion has been linked to immune suppression and increased risk of postoperative infection. Autologous blood transfusion may not be associated with increased risk of infection because it presumably is not immunosuppressive. Fifty recipients of preoperatively donated autologous blood were matched to 50 recipients of homologous blood who underwent the same procedure, and the hospital course was reviewed for evidence of postoperative infection in both groups. Postoperative leukocytosis and febrile episodes were more common in homologous blood recipients (17 and 6 vs. 12 and 4, respectively). Sixteen percent of the 50 homologous blood recipients had positive cultures, as compared to 4 percent of the 50 autologous blood recipients (p less than 0.05). To understand the nature of copper distribution during malignancy, 27 strains A/RB mice with fibrosarcoma were used. Tracer methodology with radioactive isotope of copper (64Cu) was applied. In the study made at different time intervals after isotope administration whole blood plasma and different tissues like liver, heart, spleen kidney and brain were investigated. Liver nuclear fractions were also examined. Distribution of 64Cu in different tissues reflected interesting results. While the incorporation pattern in the liver showed gradual fall from 8 h of isotope administration, the tumor tissue exhibited gradual elevation, compared to the controls.
