The involvement of the unique saiga nose in vocal production has been neglected so far. Rutting male saigas produce loud nasal roars. Prior to roaring, they tense and extend their noses in a highly stereotypic manner. This change of nose configuration includes dorsal folding and convex curving of the nasal vestibulum and is maintained until the roar ends. Red and fallow deer males that orally roar achieve a temporary increase of vocal tract length (vtl) by larynx retraction. Saiga males attain a similar effect by pulling their flexible nasal vestibulum rostrally, allowing for a temporary elongation of the nasal vocal tract by about 20%. Decrease of formant frequencies and formant dispersion, as acoustic effects of an increase of vtl, are assumed to convey important information on the quality of a dominant male to conspecifics, e.g. on body size and fighting ability. Nasal roaring in saiga may equally serve to deter rival males and to attract females. Anatomical constraints might have set a limit to the rostral pulling of the nasal vestibulum. It seems likely that the sexual dimorphism of the saiga nose was induced by sexual selection. Adult males of many mammalian species, after sniffing or licking female urine or genital secretions, raise their head and strongly retract their upper lip and small nasal vestibulum while inhalating orally. This flehmen behaviour is assumed to promote transport of non-volatile substances via the incisive ducts into the vomeronasal organs for pheromone detection. The flehmen aspect in saiga involves the extensive flexible walls of the greatly enlarged nasal vestibulum and is characterized by a distinctly concave configuration of the nose region, the reverse of that observed in nasal roaring. Intracellular and extracellular defenses of human phagocytes against Blastomyces dermatitidis conidia and yeasts 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The lesions of blastomycosis are characterized by both suppuration and granuloma formation, but the relative roles of human neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages against Blastomyces dermatitidis are poorly defined. Our studies reveal that B. dermatitidis yeasts are generally too large to be ingested by polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs), and are killed predominantly by external PMN attachment and degranulation, whereas conidia are first ingested, then killed. PMN function is maximal in the presence of serum, divalent cations, and complement, and killing is more efficient for conidia (approximately 50%) than for yeasts (approximately 20%). PMNs that have degranulated, but remain attached to yeasts, block access by contiguous PMNs. When degranulated PMNs are removed, allowing access by fresh PMNs, there is a further increment in yeast killing. Both conidia and yeasts are killed by predominantly oxidative PMN mechanisms, with conidia being greater activators of the respiratory burst, and proportionately more influenced by oxidative inhibitors. Peripheral blood monocytes can kill conidia (approximately 35%), but are feebly active against yeasts (approximately 5%). Monocyte-derived macrophages kill approximately 90% of conidia and 40% of yeasts. The dramatic susceptibility of conidia, the infective particles of B. dermatitidis, to nonspecific phagocytic host defenses may help to explain the relative rarity of blastomycosis as a clinical problem. The presence of PMNs in lesions of blastomycosis may indicate an active, although limited, role of these cells in host defense against B. dermatitidis yeasts. 相似文献

Bilateral prophylactic mastectomies (BPM) in young previvors with high‐risk mutations are rising; however, little data on management, therapy timing, and outcomes exist. BRCA+ patients under 30 undergoing BPM from 2006 to 2018 were reviewed. Twenty‐two patients aged 23‐29 underwent mastectomy 4.2 years after genetic diagnosis. Twelve patients completed surveys, most often citing personal decisions (50%) for undergoing mastectomy and plastic surgeons’ recommendations (83.3%) for reconstruction. About 73% of patients completely understood risks/benefits of mastectomy and 63.6% of reconstruction. Patients reported high BREAST‐Q Satisfaction and Well‐Being scores. Continued educational resource development will optimize shared decision‐making in the reconstructive process. 相似文献

Respiratory events (RE) during sleep induce cortical arousals (A) and marked changes in autonomic markers in sleep apnea syndrome
(SAS). The aims of the study were double. First, we assessed whether pulse wave amplitude (PWA) added to polysomnography (PSG)
could improve RE and A detection; second, we wanted to know whether the quality of detection of these two parameters could
be improved using PWA. Respiratory disturbance index (RDI) and A were randomly scored twice by the same observer in 12 male
patients with SAS. The first scoring was done using conventional PSG signals, the second scoring adding PWA to PSG. We also
measured interobserver agreement by randomly selecting and reading 100 PSG sequences of 5 min with and without PWA by two
observers. Adding PWA to PSG parameters allowed to detect significantly more RDI (53.9 ± 21.6 h−1 versus 48.3 ± 22.3 h−1, p < 0.001) and more A (68.0 ± 14.4 versus 59.4 ± 16.5, p < 0.001). Moreover, after using PWA, there was no significant disagreement between two observers for detecting RE, showing

Live attenuated viral vectors that express human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antigens are being developed as potential vaccines to prevent HIV infection. The first phase 2 trial with a canarypox vector (vCP205, which expresses gp120, p55, and protease) was conducted in 435 volunteers with and without gp120 boosting, to expand the safety database and to compare the immunogenicity of the vector in volunteers who were at higher risk with that in volunteers at lower risk for HIV infection. Neutralizing antibodies to the MN strain were stimulated in 94% of volunteers given vCP205 plus gp120 and in 56% of volunteers given vCP205 alone. CD8(+) cytotoxic T lymphocyte cells developed at some time point in 33% of volunteers given vCP205, with or without gp120. Phase 3 field trials with these or similar vaccines are needed, to determine whether efficacy in preventing HIV infection or in slowing disease progression among vaccinees who become infected is associated with the level and types of immune responses that were induced by the vaccines in this study. 相似文献

National experts are calling for more integrated approaches such as the life course perspective to reduce health disparities and achieve greater health equity. The translation and application of the life course perspective is therefore of great interest to public health planners, policy makers and funders to promote community-wide improvements in maternal and child health. However, few organizations have applied the life course perspective in designing strategic funding initiatives. For over three decades, Wisconsin has observed persistent racial disparities in birth outcomes. This complex public health issue led to the development of the Lifecourse Initiative for Health Families, a regional multi-million dollar funding initiative created and supported by the Wisconsin Partnership Program of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (Created by the UW SMPH from an endowment following the conversion of Blue Cross Blue Shield United of Wisconsin, the Partnership Program makes investments in research, education, and public health and prevention initiatives that improve health and reduce health disparities in the state.). Over a 2-year period, the program funded four collaboratives to adopt a life course perspective and develop strategic plans for improving African American birth outcomes. The Twelve-point plan to close the black–white gap in birth outcomes provided the framework for the planning process. Despite the conceptual challenges, the life course perspective was embraced by the collaboratives, challenged community assumptions on the root causes of poor birth outcomes and provided a unifying funding construct for organizing and planning complementary individual-level interventions with social and physical environmental change strategies. These integrated and complimentary approaches provide a long-term opportunity to address the persistent racial birth outcome disparity in Wisconsin. 相似文献

Being reminded of the inherently finite nature of human existence has been demonstrated to elicit strivings for sexual reproduction and the formation and maintenance of intimate relationships. Recently, it has been proposed that the perception of potential mating partners is influenced by mortality salience. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the neurocognitive processing of attractive opposite-sex faces after priming with death-related words for heterosexual men and women. Significant modulations of behavioral and neural responses were found when participants were requested to decide whether they would like to meet the presented person. Men were more in favor of meeting attractive women after being primed with death-related words compared to a no-prime condition. Increased neural activation could be found under mortality salience in the left anterior insula and the adjacent lateral prefrontal cortex (lPFC) for both men and women. As previously suggested, we believe that the lPFC activation reflects an approach-motivated defense mechanism to overcome concerns that are induced by being reminded of death and dying. Our results provide insight on a neurocognitive level that approach motivation in general, and mating motivation in particular is modulated by mortality salience. 相似文献

Numerous studies investigated the association between dynamic knee valgus and injury risk in post-pubertal and elite athletes; however, normative reference scores for competitive alpine skiers and observations on the development process throughout and beyond athletes' growth spurt are lacking. Thus, the aim of this study was to describe the dynamic knee valgus of competitive alpine skiers during drop jump landings (DJ) and single-leg squats (SLS) with respect to sex, sportive level, and biological maturation. Thirty-seven elite and 104 youth competitive alpine skiers around the growth spurt (U15) were examined for their maximal medial knee displacement (MKD) during DJ and SLS by a marker-based 3D motion analysis evaluating dynamic knee valgus. Additionally, skiers' age, anthropometry and biological maturation were assessed. MKD of youth and elite alpine skiers during DJ was comparable and did not improve with increasing training age. Female U15 skiers (on average further matured) had significantly larger MKD values during DJ than male U15 skiers (less matured) (P < .01). Moreover, MKD during DJ was directly associated with the athlete's individual biological maturation status. MKD values obtained from DJ significantly differed from those obtained during SLS (P < .01). The gender-specific difference in MKD values during DJ and their relationship with maturity offset highlight the fundamental changes to the neuromuscular control system during the growth spurt. Thus, biological maturation needs to be considered as a confounding factor for knee valgus screening. Caution is required when evaluating MKD by using high- and low-dynamic tasks, as corresponding information can differ. 相似文献
