Purpose: To investigate the score distribution, reliability, and validity of the objective Wheelchair Skills Test (WST) for scooter users.Method: A study using a test–retest design was conducted with 20 people who had mobility limitations that prevented them from ambulating more than one city block without a mobility aid, and who had owned a scooter for ≥3 months. Objective scooter skills, confidence, and physical accessibility were measured at both time points, while anxiety, depression, visual attention and task switching, functional independence, and visual acuity were measured only at baseline.Results: The mean total WST scores at Time 1 and Time 2 were 86.3% and 87.5%. The WST ICC was 0.889. The WST had a SEM of 2.50 and a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.74. The total WST scores were significantly correlated with total subjective WST-Q scores (r?=?0.547, p?=?0.013), scooter confidence (r?=?0.466, p?=?0.038), and were affected by gender (p?=?0.005).Conclusion: The WST for scooters has good test–retest reliability and generally varies as anticipated with other measures. Although further study is needed, the WST for scooters appears to have promise for use in research and clinical practice.
- Implications for Rehabilitation
It is important to understand the measurement properties of the tools we use in rehabilitation so the results can be interpreted correctly.
As scooter use increases, better measurement of skills is required.

Recently, computer‐designed three‐dimensional (3D) printing techniques have emerged as an active research area with almost unlimited possibilities. In this study, we used a computer‐designed 3D scaffold to drive new bone formation in a bone defect. Poly‐L‐lactide (PLLA) and bioactive β‐tricalcium phosphate (TCP) were simply mixed to prepare ink. PLLA + TCP showed good printability from the micronozzle and solidification within few seconds, indicating that it was indeed printable ink for layer‐by‐layer printing. In the images, TCP on the surface of (and/or inside) PLLA in the printed PLLA + TCP scaffold looked dispersed. MG‐63 cells (human osteoblastoma) adhered to and proliferated well on the printed PLLA + TCP scaffold. To assess new bone formation in vivo, the printed PLLA + TCP scaffold was implanted into a full‐thickness cranial bone defect in rats. The new bone formation was monitored by microcomputed tomography and histological analysis of the in vivo PLLA + TCP scaffold with or without MG‐63 cells. The bone defect was gradually spontaneously replaced with new bone tissues when we used both bioactive TCP and MG‐63 cells in the PLLA scaffold. Bone formation driven by the PLLA + TCP30 scaffold with MG‐63 cells was significantly greater than that in other experimental groups. Furthermore, the PLLA + TCP scaffold gradually degraded and matched well the extent of the gradual new bone formation on microcomputed tomography. Introduction
The long-term safety of dimethyl fumarate (DMF) in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) has been studied in mainly Caucasian patients. The present interim analysis aimed to evaluate the 72-week safety of DMF in Japanese patients with RRMS.Methods
Safety data of Japanese subjects enrolled in the 24-week randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled APEX study (Part I) and its following open-label extension (Part II) were analysed at 72 weeks from the beginning of Part I. In Part I, subjects were randomised to DMF treatment or matching placebo while all subjects received DMF treatment during Part II. Adverse events (AEs) reported throughout the study period were recorded.Results
Overall, 109 Japanese subjects completed 72 weeks of treatment. The incidence of AEs and serious AEs was 95% and 19%, respectively, in the DMF group compared with 84% and 18%, respectively, in the placebo group at 24 weeks. Common AEs (at least 5%) reported with treatment included nasopharyngitis, flushing, hot flush, gastrointestinal events, pruritus, rash, headache, increased alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). AEs led to discontinuation of DMF in 5% of patients and included MS relapse, flushing, abdominal pain, liver disorder and increased ALT/AST. After an initial decrease from baseline of 17% in the DMF group at week 24, the mean lymphocyte counts stabilised and were maintained until week 72. No opportunistic/serious infections nor malignancies were reported with DMF treatment. The incidences of AEs, serious AEs, and discontinuation due to AEs were similar between the DMF and the placebo groups.Conclusion
The 72-week safety profile of DMF in Japanese patients with RRMS was consistent with previous studies that enrolled mostly Caucasian patients, with a lower incidence of flushing and related symptoms and a lower reduction in the lymphocyte count compared with previous reports.Trial Registration

Objectives:
This study was performed to investigate the relationship between the incidence of national notifiable infectious diseases (NNIDs) and meteorological factors, air pollution levels, and hospital resources in Korea.Methods:
We collected and stored 660 000 pieces of publicly available data associated with infectious diseases from public data portals and the Diseases Web Statistics System of Korea. We analyzed correlations between the monthly incidence of these diseases and monthly average temperatures and monthly average relative humidity, as well as vaccination rates, number of hospitals, and number of hospital beds by district in Seoul.Results:
Of the 34 NNIDs, malaria showed the most significant correlation with temperature (r=0.949, p<0.01) and concentration of nitrogen dioxide (r=-0.884, p<0.01). We also found a strong correlation between the incidence of NNIDs and the number of hospital beds in 25 districts in Seoul (r=0.606, p<0.01). In particular, Geumcheon-gu was found to have the lowest incidence rate of NNIDs and the highest number of hospital beds per patient.Conclusions:

In order to increase the chemical stability of polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane against the highly oxidizing environment of a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), PBI/Nafion hybrid membrane was developed by spray coating a Nafion ionomer onto one surface of the PBI membrane. The acid–base interaction between the sulfonic acid of the Nafion and the benzimidazole of the PBI created a stable interfacial adhesion between the Nafion layer and the PBI layer. The hybrid membrane showed an area resistance of 0.269 Ω cm2 and a very low vanadium permeability of 1.95 × 10−9 cm2 min−1. The Nafion layer protected the PBI from chemical degradation under accelerated oxidizing conditions of 1 M VO2+/5 M H2SO4, and this was subsequently examined in spectroscopic analysis. In the VRFB single cell performance test, the cell with the hybrid membrane showed better energy efficiency than the Nafion cell with 92.66% at 40 mA cm−2 and 78.1% at 100 mA cm−2 with no delamination observed between the Nafion layer and the PBI layer after the test was completed.Novel polybenzimidazole (PBI)/Nafion hybrid membranes for the VRFB are made by spray coating a Nafion layer to protect PBI from chemical degradation. 相似文献

In January 2014, an outbreak of infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N8) virus began on a duck farm in South Korea and spread to other poultry farms nearby. During this outbreak, many sick or dead wild birds were found around habitats frequented by migratory birds. To determine the causes of death, we examined 771 wild bird carcasses and identified HPAI A(H5N8) virus in 167. Gross and histologic lesions were observed in pancreas, lung, brain, and kidney of Baikal teals, bean geese, and whooper swans but not mallard ducks. Such lesions are consistent with lethal HPAI A(H5N8) virus infection. However, some HPAI-positive birds had died of gunshot wounds, peritonitis, or agrochemical poisoning rather than virus infection. These findings suggest that susceptibility to HPAI A(H5N8) virus varies among species of migratory birds and that asymptomatic migratory birds could be carriers of this virus. 相似文献

Silver sulfide nanoparticles (Ag2S NPs) are currently being explored as infrared active nanomaterials that can provide environmentally stable alternatives to heavy metals such as lead. In this paper, we describe the novel synthesis of Ag2S NPs by using a sonochemistry method and the fabrication of photodetector devices through the integration of Ag2S NPs atop a graphene sheet. We have also synthesized Li-doped Ag2S NPs that exhibited a significantly enhanced photodetector sensitivity via their enhanced absorption ability in the UV-NIR region. First-principles calculations based on a density functional theory formalism indicated that Li-doping produced a dramatic enhancement of NIR photoluminescence of the Ag2S NPs. Finally, high-performance photodetectors based on CVD graphene and Ag2S NPs were demonstrated and investigated; the hybrid photodetectors based on Ag2S NPs and Li-doped Ag2S NPs exhibited a photoresponse of 2723.2 and 4146.0 A W−1 respectively under a light exposure of 0.89 mW cm−2 at 550 nm.
