During linear accelerations, compensatory reflexes should continually occur in order to maintain objects of visual interest
as stable images on the retina. In the present study, the three-dimensional organization of the vestibulo-ocular reflex in
pigeons was quantitatively examined during linear accelerations produced by constant velocity off-vertical axis yaw rotations
and translational motion in darkness. With off-vertical axis rotations, sinusoidally modulated eye-position and velocity responses
were observed in all three components, with the vertical and torsional eye movements predominating the response. Peak torsional
and vertical eye positions occurred when the head was oriented with the lateral visual axis of the right eye directed orthogonal
to or aligned with the gravity vector, respectively. No steady-state horizontal nystagmus was obtained with any of the rotational
velocities (8–58°/s) tested. During translational motion, delivered along or perpendicular to the lateral visual axis, vertical
and torsional eye movements were elicited. No significant horizontal eye movements were observed during lateral translation
at frequencies up to 3 Hz. These responses suggest that, in pigeons, all linear accelerations generate eye movements that
are compensatory to the direction of actual or perceived tilt of the head relative to gravity. In contrast, no translational
horizontal eye movements, which are known to be compensatory to lateral translational motion in primates, were observed under
the present experimental conditions.

Recent findings of vestibular responses in part of the visual cortex--the dorsal medial superior temporal area (MSTd)--indicate that vestibular signals might contribute to cortical processes that mediate the perception of self-motion. We tested this hypothesis in monkeys trained to perform a fine heading discrimination task solely on the basis of inertial motion cues. The sensitivity of the neuronal responses was typically lower than that of psychophysical performance, and only the most sensitive neurons rivaled behavioral performance. Responses recorded in MSTd were significantly correlated with perceptual decisions, and the correlations were strongest for the most sensitive neurons. These results support a functional link between MSTd and heading perception based on inertial motion cues. These cues seem mainly to be of vestibular origin, as labyrinthectomy produced a marked elevation of psychophysical thresholds and abolished MSTd responses. This study provides evidence that links single-unit activity to spatial perception mediated by vestibular signals, and supports the idea that the role of MSTd in self-motion perception extends beyond optic flow processing. 相似文献

The cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptor is expressed by a sub-population of primary sensory neurons. However, data on the neurochemical identity of the CB1 receptor-expressing cells, and CB1 receptor expression by the peripheral and central terminals of these neurons are inconsistent and limited. We characterised CB1 receptor expression in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and spinal cord at the lumbar 4–5 level, as well as in the urinary bladder and glabrous skin of the hindpaw. About 1/3 of DRG neurons exhibited immunopositivity for the CB1 receptor, the majority of which showed positivity for the nociceptive markers calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or/and Griffonia (bandeiraea) simplicifolia IB4 isolectin-binding. Virtually all CB1 receptor-immunostained fibres showed immunopositivity for CGRP in the skin, while very few did in the urinary bladder. No CB1 receptor-immunopositive nerve fibres were IB4 positive in either peripheral tissue. Spinal laminae I and II-outer showed the highest density of CB1 receptor-immunopositive punctae, the majority of which showed positivity for CGRP or/and IB4 binding. These data indicate that a major sub-population of nociceptive primary sensory neurons expresses CB1 receptors that are transported to both peripheral and central terminals of these cells. Therefore, the present data suggest that manipulation of endogenous CB1 receptor agonist levels in these areas may significantly reduce nociceptive input into the spinal cord. 相似文献

The objective of the present study was to test the association between Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and the cathecolamine-O-methyl-transferase (COMT) low-activity (Met158) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). In this case-control study, DNA was obtained from venous blood of 19 BPD patients and 36 healthy subjects. COMT-Val158Met single-nucleotide polymorphism was genotyped by predesigned SNP assay. The COMT Met158 allele was over-represented in patients with BPD in comparison to normal subjects (68.4% vs 44.4%, respectively; Fisher exact test, p = .02). In terms of genotype, the Met158Met subjects were more frequent in patients versus controls (47.4% vs 22.2%, respectively), whereas the high-activity genotype Val158Val was under-represented (10.5% vs 33.3%, respectively). The allele encoding for the COMT with low enzymatic efficiency was found to be over-represented in BPD, possibly resulting in excessive synaptic dopaminergic activity and ultimately affecting externalizing behaviours, such as impulsivity and aggressiveness. 相似文献

A retrospective radiographic analysis of the acetabulum of 13 patients (14 hips) with proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), clinically classified into Gillespie and Torode type 1, was performed to better understand its morphologic features at maturity. The version of the proximal part of the acetabulum was determined quantitatively and qualitatively. All 14 hips showed residual or borderline acetabular dysplasia with a mean lateral centre-edge angle of -1.5degrees and an acetabular index of 30degrees. The acetabular dome was retroverted in all hips and averaged -24degrees. Acetabular deficiency compared with the opposite side, while not present with respect to the anterior wall, averaged 12% with respect to the posterior wall. Dysplasia associated with type 1 PFFD is therefore fundamentally different from that seen in developmental residual hip dysplasia. Clinically, despite radiographic evidence of dysplasia, 57% were without clinical manifestations of hip pathology. This may be due to a number of factors including age of last radiograph, severity of dysplasia, and the decreased functional demand placed on the hip in some individuals with associated malformations. For the symptomatic hip, the posterior insufficiency and relative retroversion of the acetabular dome should be taken into consideration in planning reorientation procedures. This can help to prevent problems of persistent subluxation or acetabulo-femoral impingement following reconstruction. 相似文献

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Treatment-induced white matter (WM) injury in medulloblastoma survivors, as manifested by deterioration of cognitive function, is prevalent. However, no reliable imaging method exists for early detection and quantification. Our goal was to determine whether anisotropy of WM is reduced in medulloblastoma survivors and whether fractional anisotropy (FA) can be used as an index for evaluation of treatment-induced WM injury. METHODS: We evaluated nine medulloblastoma survivors treated with surgery, cranial irradiation, and chemotherapy by use of diffusion-tensor (DT) imaging and compared FA findings in selected WM sites (cerebellar hemispheres, pons, medulla oblongata, frontal periventricular WM, parietal periventricular WM, and corona radiata) with those of healthy age-matched control subjects. FA maps were compared with conventional T2-weighted images. FA was also compared with age at treatment, time interval since treatment, and deterioration of school performance. The two-tailed paired t test was used to determine statistical significance (P <.05). RESULTS: Significant reduction of FA (P <.05) was seen in all anatomic sites in the patient group compared with FA in control subjects, except in the frontal periventricular WM, even in areas with normal appearance on T2-weighted images. FA reduction ranged from 12.4-19% (mean, 16.5%). Compared with control subjects, posterior fossa and supratentorial WM FA in patients were reduced by 14.6% (SD 1.9%) and 18.4% (SD 0.55%), respectively (P =.029). Reduction of supratentorial WM FA correlated with younger age at treatment (< 5 years), longer interval since treatment (> 5 years), and deterioration of school performance. CONCLUSION: DT imaging and use of the index FA is potentially useful for early detection and monitoring of treatment-induced WM injury in children with medulloblastoma. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our report is to describe color Doppler sonography findings of omental infarction and correlate them with surgical and pathology findings. Ten children underwent preoperative gray-scale and color Doppler sonographic examinations; omental infarction was confirmed at surgery. CONCLUSION: Color Doppler sonography findings were reviewed and correlated with surgical and pathology findings. One hundred forty-eight patients with gastrointestinal disease, 50 patients with the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and 49 each with peptic ulcer and inflammatory bowel disease, were interviewed to determine if they had proctalgia fugax (PF) and if the symptom was associated with the IBS. One-third of the patients had PF. It occurred in 51% of females and 12% of males (p less than 0.001). When corrected for sex, PF was no more prevalent in IBS than in peptic ulcer or inflammatory bowel disease. Only two of six previously described IBS symptoms were more prevalent in the PF patients. Attacks occurred in the day in 94%, and one-third of sufferers related them to defecation. The pain was localized in the anus in 90%, occurred less than five times a year in 51%, and lasted less than 1 min in 57%. In most, activity was not interrupted by this pain and only 20% had ever reported it to a physician. PF is very common among patients with abdominal symptoms, but is not related to the IBS. Since it is infrequent, benign, and transient, PF is usually not mentioned to the physician. 相似文献
