The lizard genus Cnemidophorus consists of both sexual species and unisexual, all-female species. We characterized changes in circulating levels of gonadal sex steroid hormones in males and females in one of the sexual species, C. inornatus, to compare them to previously measured levels in a unisexual, parthenogenetic species, C. uniparens. Reproductively active male C. inornatus have high levels of dihydrotestosterone and somewhat lower levels of testosterone. These levels are highest immediately after females become sexually receptive and decrease later at the onset of testicular regression. Female C. inornatus have high levels of estradiol and low levels of progesterone during the previtellogenic and vitellogenic phases of the ovarian cycle. During the postovulatory phase, they have low levels of estradiol and high levels of progesterone. We could not detect circulating levels of androgen at any phase of the ovarian cycle. The patterns of hormone secretion in the female C. inornatus are virtually identical to those of its direct evolutionary descendant, C. uniparens. This confirms our previous conclusion that the evolution of the parthenogenetic mode of reproduction and expression of male-like pseudosexual behavior that are characteristic of the unisexual C. uniparens has not been accomplished by evolutionary modifications in the pattern of sex steroid hormone secretion. Rather it is the response to this pattern of secretion that has been modified.  相似文献

Several recent advances in epidural anesthesia and analgesia have been reviewed. Perhaps the most exciting area of anticipated future developments relates to the continued development of novel analgesic agents and new epidural delivery systems. There appears to be some movement toward an increased use of intrathecal or peripheral neural blockade techniques for some clinical situations where epidural anesthesia and analgesia have been previously used; however, the ability to provide anesthesia and analgesia to relatively large areas of the body with a single injection or continuous catheter technique without the associated risks of dural puncture and intrathecal catheter placement will continue to assure epidural anesthesia and analgesia techniques a prominent role in anesthesia and pain management.  相似文献

The disruptive period around the time of the divorce can shatter a child's entire living milieu. An 8-week experiential children's group incorporating art and creative activities as well as a concurrent parent group is described. The aim of treatment was to bolster children's abilities to communicate with parents and other caretakers. Overall, participants were observed to effectively release painful affect, communicate more openly, and identify strengths in their family systems. Yalom's therapeutic group factors were incorporated into the treatment model. The research of Davies and Cummings related to children in the context of family therapy was also considered. Group leaders included advance practice registered nurses. Follow-up objective data collected from participants might provide further information about the efficacy of the interventions.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To explicate the similarities and differences between the concepts of caring and social support. METHODS: Qualitative concept comparison. FINDINGS: Similarities and/or subtle and substantive differences exist between caring and social support. Both concepts are characterized as dynamic interpersonal processes that involve sensitivity. Caring appears to lie within the purview of expert nurse providers, while social support is located primarily within the domain of lay providers. Social support is perfunctory and focused, whereas caring encounters are more intimate and holistic. Caring results in improved mental well-being for both recipients and providers, while improvements in mental health are limited to social support recipients. Unlike social support, physical well-being is an outcome of caring. CONCLUSIONS: Caring and social support share common attributes and outcomes; however, they appear to be different processes that predominately exist in separate domains. Caring appears to reside within the professional paradigm of nursing, while social support exists primarily within the sphere of lay providers. IMPLICATIONS: Nurses are encouraged to develop and use well-delineated conceptual frameworks to guide practice and research.  相似文献

Risk assessments for nongenotoxic chemicals assume a threshold below which no adverse outcomes are seen. However, when an endogenous chemical, such as 17ss-estradiol (E2), occurs at a concentration sufficient to cause an effect, the threshold is already exceeded. Under these circumstances, exogenous estradiol is not expected to provide a threshold dose. This principle is demonstrated for E2 in the red-eared slider, a turtle with temperature-dependent sex determination. In this species, gonadal sex is determined by egg incubation temperature; female development requires endogenous estrogen produced by elevated temperature. While normal production of females by endogenous estrogens is not an adverse effect, exogenous estrogens can sex reverse presumptive males, which can be an adverse effect. A large dose-response study was conducted using seven doses and a vehicle control (starting n = 300/group); a single E2 dose was applied to the eggshell of recently laid eggs. Animals were sexed after hatching. The incubation temperature chosen, 28.6 degrees C, generates a minority of females. Thus, the criteria for testing the threshold hypothesis were met, i.e., there is evidence that there is endogenous estrogen and that it generates an irreversible response. The lowest E2 dose tested, 400 pg/egg (40 ng/kg), sex reversed 14.4% of the animals, demonstrating very low dose sensitivity. The data were fit with a modified Michaelis-Menten equation, which provided an estimate of 1.7 ng/egg for endogenous estradiol. The median effective dose (ED50) was 5.0 +/- 2.0 ng/egg (95% confidence limits), of which 1.7 ng/egg was endogenous estradiol and 3.3 ng/egg came from the applied estradiol. There was no apparent threshold dose for E2. A smaller replication confirmed these results. These results provide a simple biologically based dose-response model and suggest that chemicals which act mechanistically like E2 may also show no threshold dose. If so, even low environmental concentrations of such chemicals may carry risk for sex reversal.  相似文献

Delirium is physiologically plausible in elderly individuals with a poor nutritional status. We explored body composition, serum protein levels, and delirium in a multicenter long-term care study using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Estimates from the BIA procedure included the body cell mass and fat-free mass (FFM) of nursing home elderly residents (N = 312). Increased delirium was identified in men and women who were leaner and had lower FFM. Clinical surveillance for delirium in frail elderly individuals with low serum albumin levels and polypharmacy is recommended because of their increased likelihood of having drug toxicities for medications with protein-binding properties.  相似文献

A mouse homolog of P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1), a P- selectin receptor on myeloid cells, has been cloned using the human cDNA sequence to probe a cDNA library prepared from the mouse WEHI-3 monocytic cell line and a genomic DNA library prepared from 129/SvJ mouse tissue. The gene flanking the entire open reading frame of 397 amino acids is composed of a single exon. Mouse and human PSGL-1 show an overall similarity of 67% and an identity of 50% and contain a similar domain organization. However, there are 10 threonine/serine- rich decameric repeats in mouse PSGL-1 as compared with 15 threonine- rich repeats in human PSGL-1. When the mouse PSGL-1 cDNA is coexpressed with an alpha 1,3/1,4 fucosyltransferase cDNA in COS cells, a functional protein is expressed on the COS cell surface mediating binding to human P-selectin. The mouse PSGL-1 gene, Selpl, was mapped to a position on mouse chromosome 5 (Chr 5). Northern blot analyses of mouse tissues showed moderate expression of a PSGL-1 mRNA species in most tissues including heart, kidney, liver, muscle, ovary, and stomach and high levels of expression in blood, bone marrow, brain, adipose tissue, spleen, and thymus. Whereas certain mouse myeloid cell lines including PU5-1.8, WEHI-3B, and 32DC13 express high levels of PSGL-1 mRNA, only WEHI-3B and 32DC13 bind to P-selectin; this interaction is blocked by anti-PSGL-1 antibody. WEHI-3B cells bind significantly better to P-selectin than to E-selectin. Although comparable P-selectin binding is observed in 32DC13 cells, these cells bind better to E- selectin. Binding of 32DC13 cells to E-selectin is not blocked by anti- PSGL-1 antibody. Treatment of WEHI-3B cells with trypsin or neuraminidase abolished their ability to interact with P-selectin. These results indicate that mouse PSGL-1 has structural and functional homology to human PSGL-1 but is characterized by differences in the composition and number of the decameric repeats. PSGL-1 on mouse myeloid cells is critical for high-affinity binding to P-selectin but not E-selectin.  相似文献
