Use of concentrate growth factors gel or membrane in chronic wound healing: Description of 18 cases

Treating chronic skin wounds in patients with diabetes, bed sores, or stasis dermatitis is typically a time‐consuming and costly process, and the outcome is not always promising. Concentrated growth factor (CGF) obtained from the autologous venous blood of patients via fractional centrifugation is employed for producing a CGF gel or membrane that can be applied to expedite self‐regeneration of skin wounds. In this case report, we presented the results from 18 patients with chronic skin wounds treated with a CGF gel or membrane produced from autologous venous blood. Noticeable granulation tissue and regenerated epidermal coverage were observed in 16 patients who received CGF treatment over various time courses, thereby demonstrating the significant therapeutic effects of CGF treatment in overall wound healing. The other two patients with stasis ulcers in their calves failed to respond to the treatment because of the comorbidity of iliac vein thrombosis. In addition, by culturing HaCaT keratinocytes using CGF membrane as the foundation, we observed that HaCaT cells attached to the CGF membrane migrated and proliferated to form an epithelium‐like structure. Comprehensively, the clinical results infer that CGF gel can expedite the regeneration of the soft tissue at the wound, whereas CGF membrane may facilitate its marginal re‐epithelialisation. The combination of the two can promote autologous regeneration of both deep and superficial wounds effectively and safely.     

糖尿病护理的交互式激光视盘研发与测试

目的 应用交互式影音系统研发一套糖尿病的中西医护理指导光盘教材.方法 光盘运用交互式多媒体编辑软件制作而成,并邀请某医院28位糖尿病患者测试使用本光盘3个月.结果 光盘内容以糖尿病为主,包含西医的糖尿病观、中医的糖尿病观、中西医结合护理措施以及保健疗法.大多数的受试者给予本光盘极高的评价,增加了疾病知识,这显示此光盘对糖尿病护理是有益的,未来可推广此方法用于疾病知识教育.     

A genome-wide association study identifies a novel susceptibility locus for renal cell carcinoma on 12p11.23

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most lethal urologic cancer. Only two common susceptibility loci for RCC have been confirmed to date. To identify additional RCC common susceptibility loci, we conducted an independent genome-wide association study (GWAS). We analyzed 533 191 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for association with RCC in 894 cases and 1516 controls of European descent recruited from MD Anderson Cancer Center in the primary scan, and validated the top 500 SNPs in silico in 3772 cases and 8505 controls of European descent involved in the only published GWAS of RCC. We identified two common variants in linkage disequilibrium, rs718314 and rs1049380 (r(2) = 0.64, D?' = 0.84), in the inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor, type 2 (ITPR2) gene on 12p11.23 as novel susceptibility loci for RCC (P = 8.89 × 10(-10) and P = 6.07 × 10(-9), respectively, in meta-analysis) with an allelic odds ratio of 1.19 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.13-1.26] for rs718314 and 1.18 (95% CI: 1.12-1.25) for rs1049380. It has been recently identified that rs718314 in ITPR2 is associated with waist-hip ratio (WHR) phenotype. To our knowledge, this is the first genetic locus associated with both cancer risk and WHR.     

Lack of increase in time to blood culture positivity in a patient with persistent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia predicts failure of antimicrobial therapy

Time to positivity is an available parameter in automated blood culture systems. We report a patient with persistent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia who received various regimens for treatment of methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and demonstrate that monitoring of the time to positive blood culture might be helpful in the early recognition of treatment failure.     

Prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus and its association with hepatitis B,C, and D virus infections among incarcerated male substance abusers in Taiwan

Taiwan has been facing a rising epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection since 2004. Injection drug users comprised 38.5% of accumulated HIV cases by 2007. This cross‐sectional study investigated the seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis D virus (HDV), and HIV infection in 753 male substance users who were detained in a detoxification center in Taoyuan, Taiwan. The subjects were enrolled into the study consecutively between February and October, 2005. The seroprevalence rates of HIV antibodies, HCV antibodies, and HBV surface antigens among all subjects, and HDV antibodies among HBV carriers were 6.9% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.19–8.95), 30.5% (95% CI: 27.23–33.93), 16.9% (95% CI: 14.24–19.71) and 13.7% (95% CI: 8.19–21.04), respectively. Subjects in the heroin injection group had significantly higher rates of HIV infection, HCV infection and HDV superinfection (25.5%, 89.6%, and 38.7%) than those in the heroin non‐injection group (0.9%, 24.5%, and 6.25%), the methamphetamine group (0.3%, 8.1%, and 6.7%), and the club drug group (1%, 3%, and 0%; P < 0.001). The odds of HCV, HIV, or HDV infection were 74.7, 63.8, and 11.1 higher, respectively, for heroin injection drug users than for non‐injection drug users (P < 0.0001). Compared to HIV‐negative individuals, the odds of being a heroin injector and the odds of HCV co‐infections were 64‐fold and 149‐fold higher, respectively, in HIV‐positive individuals. The impact of HBV, HCV, and HDV infection on the HIV epidemic in Taiwan should be monitored closely. J. Med. Virol. 81:973–978, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
