Identification of malaria hot spots for focused intervention in tribal state of India: a GIS based approach

Background  

In India, presently malaria shows a declining trend whereas Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) cases show an up trend. In central India, specifically, Madhya Pradesh (M.P.) a forested and tribal area, control of malaria is logistically difficult and outbreaks are frequently recorded, reasons for this being inadequate surveillance, poor reporting, a time lag in reporting to decision makers and a lack of geo referenced information to pin point the trouble spots for a timely preventive action.     

Is octreotide a risk factor in necrotizing enterocolitis?

Octreotide is used as a second-line treatment for hyerinsulinemic hypoglycemia in neonates who do not respond to diazoxide. We present a case of a full-term newborn with massive enterocolitis that developed after octreotide was started for the treatment of refractory hypoglycemia. Multiple intestinal resections were necessary to save intestinal length and restore intestinal function. One case has previously been reported linking the use of octreotide to the development of necrotizing enterocolitis in an infant.     

Yellow Lid Sign in Wegner's Granulomatosis

Orbital manifestations in Wegener's granulomatosis develop in over 50% of patients. Ischemic vasculitis and optic nerve compression result in visual impairment. This case report highlights the importance of the yellow lid sign in the diagnosis of orbital granulomatosis as well as provides an explanation for the reversal of this phenomenon.     

Prosthetic Rehabilitation of an Orbital Defect: A Case Report

Mutilation of a portion of a face can cause a heavy impact on the self image and personality of an individual. Surgical removal of an eye is a severe handicap to a patient because the most important sensory organ of communication is lost. Depending on the severity of the defect Ocular/Orbital prosthesis are required in these patients for rehabilitation. This case report details the clinical management of a patient following enbloc removal of an eye. Fabrication of a sectional two piece orbital prosthesis has been detailed. The importance of meticulous treatment planning to tackle the challenges faced in fabricating an orbital prosthesis is explained with relevant literature.     

Breast Cancer Treatment of Women with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder from Philadelphia, PA: Lessons Learned and Suggestions for Improvement

Treating cancer in patients with concurrent severe mental illness is complex and challenging for patients, families, and health care providers. Two such illnesses include schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In this review, cases of women with breast cancer and severe mental illness from Philadelphia, PA illustrate the obstacles these women face in maintaining adequate cancer care. Barriers to receiving cancer treatment include understanding their disease, continuing medications and appointments, and experiencing complications of their psychiatric disorders. Learning from these cases is critical for health care providers and allows for innovation in treating and educating this difficult population. Increasing patient visit time, using social support services, and psychiatrist and psychiatrist-liaisons are necessary to improve care. In addition, family or caregivers should be included in discussions when possible. These techniques will assist in educating patients, improve insight into their disease and treatment, and allow them to benefit from cancer therapy.     

CT findings of a unicameral calcaneal bone cyst containing a fluid-fluid level.

Calcaneal unicameral bone cysts often contain fluid, but rarely contain fluid-fluid levels. We present a case focusing on the CT findings of a large calcaneal bone cyst with a fluid-fluid level and a review of the literature.     

Characterization of responses and comparison of calibration factor for commercial MOSFET detectors

A commercial metal oxide silicon field effect transistor (MOSFET) dosimeter of model TN502-RD has been characterized for its linearity, reproducibility, field size dependency, dose rate dependency, and angular dependency for Cobalt-60 (⁶⁰Co), 6-MV, and 15-MV beam energies. The performance of the MOSFET clearly shows that it is highly reproducible, independent of field size and dose rate. Furthermore, MOSFET has a very high degree of linearity, with r-value > 0.9 for all 3 energies. The calibration factor for 2 similar MOSFET detectors of model TN502-RD were also estimated and compared for all 3 energies. The calibration factor between the 2 similar MOSFET detectors shows a variation of about 1.8% for ⁶⁰Co and 15 MV, and for 6 MV it shows variation of about 2.5%, indicating that calibration should be done whenever a new MOSFET is used. However, the detector shows considerable angular dependency of about 8.8% variation. This may be due to the variation in radiation sensitivity between flat and bubble sides of the MOSFET, and indicates that positional care must be taken while using MOSFET for stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiotherapy dosimetric applications.
