Summary: Poly[ethylene‐co‐(butyl acrylate)‐co‐(carbon monoxide)] (polyEBC) samples, prepared from 13C‐labeled carbon monoxide, were characterized using two dimensional (2D) pulsed field gradient (PFG) 750 MHz NMR spectroscopy. To elucidate the complex mixture of structures present in this terpolymer, 2D 1H/13C‐heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC) experiments were conducted by selectively exciting the enhanced peaks resulting from 13C‐labeling. High resolution 2D NMR combined with 13C‐labeling of the polymer greatly simplifies the 2D NMR spectra, selectively enhances the weak peaks from low occurrence C‐centered triad structures and aids in their resonance assignments.
Ni0.6Zn0.4Al0.5Fe1.5−xNdxO4 ferrite samples, with x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1, were synthesized using the sol–gel method. The effects of Nd3+ doping on the structural, magnetic and spectroscopic properties were investigated. XRD Rietveld refinement carried out using the FULLPROF program shows that the Ni–Zn ferrite retains its pure single phase cubic structure with Fdm space group. An increase in lattice constant and porosity happens with increasing Nd3+ concentration. FTIR spectra present the two prominent absorption bands in the range of 400 to 600 cm−1 which are the fingerprint region of all ferrites. The change in Raman modes in the synthesized ferrite system were observed with Nd3+ substitution. The magnetization curves show a typical transition, at the Curie temperature TC, from a low temperature ferrimagnetic state to a high temperature paramagnetic state. The saturation magnetization, coercivity and remanence magnetization are found to be decreasing with increasing the Nd3+ concentration. The incorporation of Nd3+ in the Ni–Zn–Al ferrite spinel causes an improvement in magnetic parameters. Spectroscopic properties were discussed based on FTIR and Raman measurements and proved the purity and good crystallization of the samples.
Mastication and swallowing are two tightly integrated components of food intake behavior. We investigated the effects of stimulating the chewing area of the fronto-orbital cortex (CCx) on some muscles and medullary interneurons (Ins) or motoneurons (Mns) active during swallowing. For the purpose of comparison, the lingual nerve (LN) was also stimulated during the experiments. Electromyography (EMG) and extracellular neuronal recording were used, and swallowing was reflexly induced (RIS) by stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN). RIS was almost totally abolished during long-lasting repetitive stimulation of CCx or LN, and was strongly facilitated after stimulation cessation. Short-duration stimulation (one or a few pulses) of both the CCx and LN also inhibited triggering of deglutition when delivered just before the onset of RIS. This inhibition appeared as a delay or total suppression of the EMG and neuronal swallowing activities. It was obvious at the level of the muscles, the hypoglossal Mns and the premotoneurons (PMns; Ins of the ventral medulla near the nucleus ambiguus), as well as at the level of the Ins of the dorsal medulla (within or around the solitary tract nucleus) which are assumed to be the core of the ‘central pattern generator' (CPG) for swallowing. In addition to the ‘chewing-related inhibition', many ventral Ins exhibited a short latency synaptic activation after CCx and/or LN stimulation. Therefore, these Ins may play a pivotal role for reflex or cortical fast control of tongue (and jaw) muscles, and for coordinating their contractions in the context of mastication–deglutition interactions.
Two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) of metabolically labeled adrenocortical proteins, identified a series of spots at a molecular size of 90 kDa [isoelectric point (pI) 6.8-7.1; p90] that was induced by ACTH, but whose intensity was reduced in cells obtained from animals treated with an extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761) and its purified component ginkgolide B (GKB). We have now identified p90. GKB (2 mg/kg x d, i.p.) was administered to rats for 8 d. Adrenocortical cells were prepared and stimulated with ACTH for 3 h. Cells obtained from saline-treated rats responded to ACTH by producing high amounts of corticosterone, an effect that was inhibited in cells obtained from GKB-treated animals. Samples were fractionated by 2D-PAGE and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry analysis of the p90 spots isolated from the gels revealed sequences sharing identity with the serotransferrin precursor protein. Further PCR screening of a rat adrenal cDNA library identified a sequence with a high degree of homology (79%) to serotransferrin precursor protein, and a lesser degree to rat transferrin (54%) and human melanotransferrin (32.8%). p90, in 2D-PAGE immunoblots, was also recognized by a monoclonal antibody raised against human 97-kDa melanotransferrin. Iron binding assays with rat adrenal cortex extracts further identified a 90-kDa melanotransferrin immunoreactive protein binding iron, suggesting that the identified protein, which we name "adrenotransferrin," may have iron-binding activity. This is the first report describing the presence of a serotransferrin precursor protein homolog belonging to the transferrin family and sharing epitopes with melanotransferrin in the adrenal, its induction by ACTH, and sensitivity to GKB.
Seven children with suspected Kawasaki disease were studied by echocardiogram. Coronary abnormalities occurred in all patients, associated with: thrombosis (2 patients) small pericardial effusion (2 patients) poor ventricular function (2 patients), moderate mitral regurgitation (2 patients). Patients received treatment with intravenous gamma globulin, aspirin, and anticoagulant. Echocardiogram abnormalities disappeared between 1 and 26 months after the onset of the disease; only persist coronary hyperechogenecity in 6 patients.
IGFs and their binding proteins are important regulators of fetal development. We have previously reported that overexpression of the human IGF binding protein-1 in mice is associated with glomerulosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate whether, in that model, decreased bioavailability of IGFs also affected nephrogenesis. When the mothers expressed human IGF binding protein-1, pups were growth retarded and had a reduced number of nephrons. Even nontransgenic pups born to heterozygous mothers had a nephron reduction, indicating that renal hypoplasia was secondary to fetal growth retardation. When the transgene was expressed only in the fetus, pups had a normal birth weight and the kidney was normal at birth, as indicated by histologic studies. However, a significant reduction in the nephron number was observed at 3 mo of age. Because nephrogenesis continues for a few days after birth in the mouse, this indicated that human IGF binding protein-1 overexpression altered postnatal nephrogenesis. In addition, exogenously added IGF-II, but not IGF-I, was effective in stimulating in vitro nephrogenesis. Together these elements suggest that reduced amounts of circulating IGFs, presumably IGF-II, impair kidney development.
