16‐Year follow‐up of an avulsed maxillary central incisor after replantation following 10‐h storage: An unusual case

Tooth avulsion is a type of dental injury defined as the complete displacement of a tooth out of the alveolar socket, and the lack of prompt treatment measures can result in the loss of function, poor quality of life, and psychological and social problems. However, several factors may not permit the immediate replantation of an avulsed tooth; therefore, delayed replantation has emerged as an alternative to meet the esthetic, functional, and psychological demands of patients. Here it was described that the successful replantation of an avulsed maxillary central incisor in a 9‐year‐old boy who presented at the clinic with the tooth stored in unfavorable conditions as dry and then in olive oil‐milk mixture almost 10 h after the event. The tooth has remained in its socket healthy for 16 years after treatment. The patient was satisfied with both esthetics and function.     

Agmatine co‐treatment attenuates allodynia and structural abnormalities in cisplatin‐induced neuropathy in rats

Cisplatin is a widely used antineoplastic agent in the treatment of various cancers. Peripheral neuropathy is a well‐known side effect of cisplatin and has potential to result in limiting and/or reducing the dose, decreasing the quality of life. Thus, effective treatments are needed. Agmatine is an endogenous neuromodulator that has been shown to exert antiallodynic effects in various animal studies. The first aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro effects of agmatine on cisplatin‐induced neurotoxicity. Primary cultures of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) which are the primary target of drug injury were prepared. DRG cells were incubated with cisplatin (100, 200, 500 μm ). Then, agmatine (10, 100, 500 μm ) was administered with the submaximal concentration of cisplatin. Cisplatin caused concentration‐dependent neurotoxicity, and agmatine did not alter this effect. The second aim was to investigate the effects of agmatine on cisplatin‐induced peripheral neuropathy in rats and the influence of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, L‐NAME, in this effect. Female Sprague Dawley rats received intraperitoneal saline (control), cisplatin (3 mg/kg), cisplatin+agmatine (100 mg/kg), or cisplatin+agmatine+L‐NAME (10 mg/kg) once a week for 5 weeks. The mechanical allodynia, hot plate, and tail clip tests were performed, and DRG cells and sciatic nerves were analyzed. Agmatine and agmatine+L‐NAME combination attenuated CIS‐induced mechanical allodynia and degeneration in DRG cells and sciatic nerves. However, L‐NAME did not potentiate the antiallodynic or neuroprotective effect of agmatine. These findings indicate that agmatine co‐administration ameliorates cisplatin‐induced neuropathy and may be a therapeutic alternative.     

Multiple regenerative nodular hyperplasia in the left infrarenal vena cava accompanied by abernethy malformation

The current study presents the case of a 19-year-old male patient who was detected with an increased alanine aminotransferase and aspartate transaminase levels during a preoperative evaluation of the right inguinal hernia operation and was later found to have Abernethy malformation accompanied by multiple regenerative nodular hyperplasia and left intra renal inferior vena cava. Regenerative nodular hyperplasia accompanying these two abnormalities is extremely rare and to the best of our knowledge, such a case has not been reported to date. Abdominal ultrasound (US) and color Doppler US, dynamic abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and portography examinations were performed and a type 2 abernethy malformation, partial malrotation of the inferior vena cava, and regenerative nodular hyperplasia were detected. We aimed to discuss the radiological signs of these two accompanying abnormalities with a literature review.     

A Chryseobacterium meningosepticum outbreak observed in 3 clusters involving both neonatal and non-neonatal pediatric patients

Three clusters of Chryseobacterium meningosepticum infections in a tertiary health center in July 2006 and January 2007 involving 8 newborns and 5 older children were investigated. The index patient was from the neonatal intensive care unit, and the older patients were from other pediatric wards. Cultures were obtained from the environment and from health care workers' hands as part of an outbreak investigation. C meningosepticum was isolated from hand cultures obtained from a senior resident and from environmental cultures obtained from powdered infant formula, an electrical button, a computer keyboard, phone, a doorknob, and an Ambu bag. Antibiogram typing and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence polymerase chain reaction indicated that all of the isolates were epidemiologically related. Nine patients improved on antimicrobial treatment, and 4 premature infants died after the infection. C meningosepticum is a well-known etiologic agent for nosocomial infections involving newborns and immunocompromised patients. Wet and dry environmental surfaces and equipment may act as a source or play a role in disseminating the microorganism. Outbreaks may be controlled with strong emphasis on infection control measures.
