Histology of port wine stains after copper vapour laser treatment

We report histological changes in four patients with port wine stains treated with 578 nm yellow light from a high power copper vapour laser. Histology showed that selective damage occurred to the ectatic blood-vessels in the dermis, without haemorrhage and damage to non-vascular structures, and without scarring. The initial damage to the overlying epidermis was not permanent, and the damaged ectatic vessels returned to normal size or were completely necrosed and replaced by collagen.     

pp60c-src encoded by the proto-oncogene c-src is a product of sensory neurons

The advent of recombinant DNA technology has led to the identification in the DNA of normal animal cells of over 30 proto-oncogenes that are homologous to retroviral transforming genes. One of these encodes a protein kinase (pp60c-src) of unknown function, that is preferentially synthesized in brain and neural retina. Here the expression of pp60c-src in the peripheral nervous system was examined in sensory neurons from chick dorsal root ganglia with antisera raised against the transforming protein of Rous sarcoma virus (pp60v-src) expressed in Escherichia coli carrying the cloned v-src gene. This antiserum recognizes pp60c-src specifically in normal chicken cells. Western immunoblotting showed that dorsal root ganglia of stage 30 (day 6.5) chick embryos contained elevated levels of pp60c-src. Immunoperoxidase staining of neuron-enriched cultures prepared from chick dorsal root ganglia showed pp60c-src immunoreactivity in cells with neuronal morphology; flat, fibroblastic cells contained no detectable immunoreactivity. Indirect double immunofluorescence with pp60src antibodies and monoclonal antibodies against the 200-kD subunit of neurofilament protein confirmed that the cells expressing pp60c-src were neurons. Ninety-six percent of the neurofilament-positive cells were immunoreactive with pp60src antibodies, and conversely, all pp60c-src-positive cells were immunoreactive with neurofilament antibodies. pp60c-src immunofluorescence appeared to be distributed over the cell body, processes, and growth cones. These results clearly demonstrate that pp60c-src is a product of neurons and is expressed in sensory neurons in culture.     

The place of colectomy with ileo-rectal anastomosis in inflammatory bowel disease

The present status of total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis in the surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease is examined. Special reference is made to the different indications for the use of the operation in Crohn's disease and in ulcerative colitis. The late results are illustrated by the outcome in the 59 patients in a personal series, and other published results.     

Civil commitment standards and patient mix in England/Wales, Italy, and the United States

Although England/Wales, Italy, and the United States share a common policy of deinstitutionalization, their mental health systems differ considerably. Each country's civil commitment standards define patient eligibility criteria along one of two primary dimensions--need for treatment or degree of dangerousness. These differential selection criteria result in mental health systems serving different subgroups of the total population. The criteria in England/Wales target older women; in the United States, younger men; and in Italy, a group balanced in age and sex. Implications for the current debate on civil commitment policies are considered.

Contribution of ambulatory EEG recording (Medilog 9000) in a population of epileptics

Thirty-four epileptic patients, aged 9 to 36, were submitted to A/EEG between May 1987 and July 1988. All patients had a thorough clinical and EEG work-up including long-term conventional EEG, afternoon polygraphic sleep recording and, in some cases, full-night EEG and video monitoring. Patients were divided into 2 groups: group I included 19 patients (18 with symptomatic partial epilepsy (SPE) and 1 with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) in whom no seizure had ever been recorded in spite of EEG recordings averaging a total of 16 hrs 10 min, awake and asleep); group II included 15 subjects (6 with SPE, 5 with IGE, 3 with symptomatic GE and 1 with undetermined epilepsy) in whom one or several seizures had been recorded. A/EEG was performed in order to: 1) obtain better clinical and EEG characterization of seizures, 2) study the circadian distribution of seizures, 3) verify the efficacy of drug treatment and, 4) establish the epileptic or non-epileptic nature of some ictal events. The results of A/EEG were considered positive in 52.63% of group I patients and in 93.33% of group II patients. The authors discuss the specific advantages of A/EEG vs conventional EEG: recording of seizures with random occurrence, of seizures accompanied by falls, checking the remission of seizures.     

Inhibition of the replication of hepatitis B virus by the carbocyclic analogue of 2''-deoxyguanosine.

We report that treatment of 2.2.15, a human hepatoblastoma-derived cell line in which hepatitis B virus is actively replicating, with the carbocyclic analogue of 2'-deoxyguanosine [Shealy, Y. F., O'Dell, C. A., Shannon, W. M. & Arnett, G. (1984) J. Med. Chem. 27, 1416-1421] resulted in the nearly complete cessation of viral replication, as monitored by the absence of both intracellular episomal and secreted viral DNAs and by the absence of viral DNA polymerase activity. The drug was nontoxic in concentrations up to 200 times the minimum effective inhibitory concentration.
