A case of vertebral osteomyelitis involving misidentification of Candida parapsilosis as C famata by the VITEK 2 compact is described. Species-specific primers were used in the polymerase chain reaction to correctly identify the clinical isolate. We present the computed tomography findings in a patient with a fractured IVC filter and migration of a broken strut to the right lower quadrant. The filter morphology and strut fragment are well demonstrated on volume rendered images confirming the value of volumetric 3D computed tomography imaging to evaluate IVC filter integrity and identify migrated filter fragments.  相似文献

To date, the most widely used method for measuring the taste characteristics of pharmaceutical preparations is psychophysical evaluation by a taste panel. However, conventional chemical analyses, on the basis of release studies, have been shown to be useful subsidiary methods. More recently, novel in vitro taste assessment apparatus and methodologies have been developed for high-throughput taste screening and quality control. Biomimetic taste sensing systems (BMTSSs), such as multichannel taste sensors or electronic tongues with global selectivity, have been welcomed by both pharmaceutical scientists and the industry as a whole. As we discuss here, the emerging in vitro approaches for assessing taste characteristics of taste masked drug and drug products will result in a decreased reliance on human panel tests.  相似文献

The Semple antirabies vaccine was developed by David Semple in India in 1911. Semple introduced a peculiarly British approach within the Pasteurian tradition by using carbolized dead virus. This article studies this unique phase of vaccine research between 1910 and 1935 to show that in the debates and laboratory experiments around the potency and safety of vaccines, categories like "living" and "dead" were often used as ideological and moral denominations. These abstract and ideological debates were crucial in defining the final configuration of the Semple vaccine, the most popular antirabies vaccine used globally, and also in shaping international vaccination policies.  相似文献

Recent evidence suggests that glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) enhances recovery of left ventricular (LV) function after transient coronary artery occlusion. However, it is uncertain whether GLP-1 has direct effects on normal or ischemic myocardium and whether the mechanism involves increased myocardial glucose uptake. LV function and myocardial glucose uptake and lactate production were measured under basal conditions and after 30 min of low-flow ischemia and 30 min of reperfusion in the presence and absence of GLP-1-(7-36) amide. The response was compared with standard buffer alone or buffer containing insulin (100 microU/ml). GLP-1 decreased the left ventricular developed pressure (baseline: 100 +/- 2 mm Hg; GLP-1: 75 +/- 3 mm Hg, p < 0.05) and LV dP/dt (baseline: 4876 +/- 65 mm Hg/s; GLP-1: 4353 +/- 76 mm Hg/s, p < 0.05) in normal hearts. GLP-1 increased myocardial glucose uptake (baseline: 33 +/- 3 micromol/min/g; GLP-1: 81 +/- 7 micromol/min/g, p < 0.05) by increasing nitric oxide production and glucose transporter (GLUT)-1 translocation. GLP-1 enhanced recovery after 30 min of low-flow ischemia with significant improvements in LV end-diastolic pressure (control: 13 +/- 4 mm Hg; GLP-1: 3 +/- 2 mm Hg, p < 0.05) and LV developed pressure (control: 66 +/- 6 mm Hg; GLP-1: 98 +/- 5 mm Hg, p < 0.05). GLP-1 increased LV function, myocardial glucose uptake, and GLUT-1 and GLUT-4 translocation during reperfusion to an extent similar to that with insulin. GLP-1 has direct effects on the normal heart, reducing contractility, but increasing myocardial glucose uptake through a non-Akt-1-dependent mechanism, distinct from the actions of insulin. However, GLP-1 increased myocardial glucose uptake and enhanced recovery of cardiac function after low-flow ischemia in a fashion similar to that of insulin.  相似文献

In the present study, four chicken anaemia virus (CAV) isolates (CAV-A, -B, -E and -P) recovered from different geographical regions of India were characterized. CAV genome of 1,766 bp nucleotide region containing the complete coding region of VP2 and VP3 proteins, and partial coding region of VP1 protein were sequenced. The nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence of the Indian CAV isolates were aligned and compared with CAV isolates of European, Asian, American and Australian origin. Phylogenetic analysis of the Indian CAV isolates were also carried out based on the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences. The results indicated that Indian isolates were genetically evolved from different parts of the world. Indian isolate, CAV-A was found closely related to European Cux-1 strain, CAV-B and -P were closely related to Bangladesh BD-3 strain and CAV-E was closely related to Australian 704 strain. The pathogenicity of the four CAV isolates was studied in day-old specific pathogen free (SPF) chicks. Day-old SPF chicks (n=50) were divided into five groups comprised of 10 chicks in each group. Group 1 was kept as control and groups 2-5 were infected with each CAV isolate separately. The chicks were infected at a dose rate of 1 ml cell culture fluid (10(4.5)TCID(50)/0.1 ml) per bird intramuscularly. The clinical signs, mortality and packed cell volume (PCV) and body weight gain were recorded on 5, 10 and 15 days post-infection. At 15th day, all the birds were sacrificed and various organs, viz., thymus, bone marrow, spleen, liver and bursa were examined for gross and microscopic changes. The pathogenicity study indicated that all the CAVs except CAV-B were able to produce clinical disease and immunosuppression in young chicks whereas the isolate CAV-B produced no clinical disease but only induced immunosuppression, which was revealed by microscopic examination of the lymphoid organs. The study showed valuable information on molecular epidemiological status of CAV isolates prevalent in India for the first time.  相似文献
