This study examined the laterality of spatial-form perception in normal adults using a cross-modal matching paradigm involving visual and tactile processing. Randomly generated eight-point and 12-point Vanderplas and Garvin (1959) patterns were used as the stimuli. In a visual-to-tactile task, a lateralized visual pattern was followed immediately by a haptic task requiring subjects to discriminate which of two simultaneously felt shapes matched the visual pattern. In a tactile-to-visual task, subjects decided which of two simultaneously felt shapes matched a lateralized visual pattern presented after haptic manipulation. There were no main effects for laterality or for sex differences. Matching accuracy was better in the visual-to-tactile task and for less complex stimuli. A visual field by feeling hand interaction showed best recognition accuracy when visual-feeling hand combinations on the same side of the body were used in the two matching tasks. These data reflect a stimulus-response compatibility explanation of spatial-form perception that is consistent with a behavioral and not a cerebral asymmetry model. 相似文献

Eleven patients with bronchial epidermoid carcinoma and undergoing treatment with cis-D.D.P. (II) were kept under electrophysiological and clinical surveillance. No other neurotoxic medication was added. The total dose of cis-D.D.P. was 300 mg/m2 over a period of three months: namely, three courses of 100 mg/m2 distributed over 5 days. Following the pretreatment check-up, the patients were divided into two groups: those without any electrophysiological abnormality (group A), and those without clinical abnormality but with a delayed latency H of the Hoffmann Reflex (group B). Patients in group A showed a slowing down of the motor nerve conduction velocity of the Median and Peroneal Nerves after a course of 100 mg, without accompanying worsening of the conduction velocity after 300 mg/m2, and prolongation of the distal latency of the sensory Median Nerve after 300 mg/m2; in group B, no significant change of electrophysiological clinical features were noted. In the two groups a non-significant reduction in amplitude of evoked responses were noted. These findings are more consistent with an axonal injury than with functional myelin injury. The authors review the existing literature and discuss the physiopathologic mechanisms of cis-D.D.P. peripheral neuropathies. 相似文献

A cohort of 1163 pregnant women in two small towns in South Wales, UK, was identified and followed until the children born to them were five years of age. Growth in these children is described and a number of determinants identified. Social-class differences were very small at birth but differences in height became clear by the age of two years and in head circumference before this. In height the differences were largely accounted for by greater growth in social class I, but there was a gradient in head circumference throughout all the social classes. The social class effects gradually increased as the children became older. Parity of the mothers had a small effect on size at birth but age of the mother had no effect once parity was allowed for. Data on illnesses in the children were collected but no effect on growth could be detected. By far the most important determinant of growth which could be controlled is maternal smoking. About 40% of the women smoked, about 17% heavily (15 or more cigarettes per day) and the prevalence of smoking altered little during pregnancy. There was a graded effect of smoking on growth up to a 9% deficit in birth-weight, a 2% deficit in length at birth and a 1.5% deficit in head circumference in the babies born to the mothers who smoked most heavily (25 or more cigarettes per day) compared with non-smokers. Acoustic analysis of a reading passage was used to identify the abnormal phonatory events associated with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) pre- and postinjection of Botulinum Toxin A (Botox). Thirty-one patients (age 22 to 74 years) diagnosed with ADSD were included for study. All patients were new recipients of Botox, and the examination of their voice occurred before and after their initial injection of Botox. Acoustic events were identified from reading samples of the Rainbow Passage produced by each of the patients. These events were examined from sentences containing primarily voiced sound segments. Dependent variables included the number of phonatory breaks, frequency shifts, and aperiodic segments--all variables previously defined by the investigators. Additionally, calculated variables were made of the percentage of time these events occurred relative to the duration of the cumulative voiced segments. A sex- and age-matched control group (+/-2 years) was included for statistical comparison. Results indicated that those with ADSD produced more aberrant acoustic events than the controls. Aperiodicity was the predominant acoustic event produced during the reading, followed by frequency shifts and phonatory breaks. Within the ADSD group, the number of atypical acoustic events decreased following Botox injection. It is important that the occurrence of specific abnormal acoustic events was sufficient to differentiate the disordered speakers from the controls following as well as preceding initial Botox injection, as indicated by discriminant function analysis. This paper complements our previous work using this acoustic analysis method for defining the abnormal events present in the voice of those with ADSD and further suggests that these measures can be used in conjunction with perceptual impressions to differentiate speakers on the basis of initial severity. 相似文献

A consecutive series of patients (1978–1981) comprising all patients with acute leukaemia from a population of 475000 inhabitants was reviewed. Thus, 94 patients were diagnosed as having acute leukaemia. No patients were lost from follow-up. The incidence figures of ALL and AML differed significantly from those of Sweden as a whole. 9 patients were < 15 years old. The median age of adult patients was 64 years, 60.8% being ≥ 60 years old. Of adult patients with AML, 20% had a preleukaemic history (chronic myeloproliferative disorders, myelodysplastic syndromes and others). None of 6 patients with leukaemia as a metamorphosis of a chronic myeloproliferative disorder achieved a complete remission. The overall remission rate of the remaining adult patients was 25%. Treated patients, 15–39 years old, with AML without any preleukaemic history, had a complete remission rate of 80% compared to 12% for patients ≥ 60 years old with the same diagnosis. Of 60 patients with ‘primary’ AML, 14 were not treated, mainly because of advanced age and complicating diseases. Most of these patients died within a week of admission. 相似文献

The cloning of cDNAs that encode functional glutamate receptors makes it possible to produce antibodies that can be used as high-affinity probes for the localization and characterization of these receptors in the mammalian brain. We have made antibodies to different regions of the first cloned member of this family, GluR1, using bacterially overproduced antigen. On Western blots, these antisera detect glycoprotein(s) of 105 kDa present in crude membranes of the hippocampus and cerebellum. The 105-kDa band is associated with postsynaptic densities, and it is observed in cultured cells upon transfection with the GluR1 cDNA. Although glutamate receptors are thought to be the most prevalent excitatory ligand-gated ion channel in the mammalian brain, immunohistochemistry reveals that the receptors recognized by these antisera are localized predominantly in neurons of the cerebellum and some structures of the limbic system, including the hippocampus, the central nucleus of the amygdala, and portions of the septum. This pattern of expression is, in general, consistent with the distribution of GluR1 mRNA as determined by in situ hybridization histochemistry. Our results suggest that glutamate excitatory circuits recognized by these antisera are predominantly found in regions of the limbic system that are reciprocally interconnected. 相似文献

A new model of temporary complete cerebral ischemia was developed and tested in 64 rats. With use of microsurgical techniques, both pterygopalatine and external carotid arteries were occluded and the basilar artery was coagulated to reduce potential collateral CBF during ischemia. After this preliminary five-vessel occlusion, temporary global ischemia was induced by occluding the common carotid arteries (CCAs) with microclips. To validate the method, CBF was measured autoradiographically in 24 anatomical regions at death after 5 min of ischemia or after 15 min of ischemia followed by 5 min of reperfusion. Mean arterial blood pressure and arterial blood gases remained stable under controlled endotracheal ventilation and anesthesia (halothane, 70% N2O, and 30% O2) throughout the CBF experiments, except for a 10-15% increase in mean arterial blood pressure for 1-5 min after bilateral CCA occlusion. After the initial five-vessel occlusion, the EEG did not change, and local CBF levels were comparable to those in anesthetized non-surgical controls. When the CCAs were occluded, the EEG flattened rapidly; after 5 min of ischemia, autoradiography showed no detectable blood flow in the forebrain and cerebellum. The local CBF levels measured after 15 min of temporary global ischemia and 5 min of reperfusion demonstrated relatively homogeneous postischemic hyperperfusion; only two of eight rats had several 1- to 3-mm areas of no-reflow. Survival studies showed increasing motor impairment after 10, 15, 30, and 60 min of temporary CCA occlusion.
