Distribution of PCB Congeners, DDE, Hexachlorobenzene, and Methylsulfonyl Metabolites of PCB and DDE Among Various Fractions of Human Blood Plasma

The concentrations of chlorinated biphenyls (CBs), 1,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2-dichloroethene (DDE), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and the methylsulfonyl metabolites of CBs (MeSO₂-CBs) and DDE (MeSO₂-DDE) were determined in human plasma samples and in the fractions obtained by ultracentrifugation of plasma into very-low-density (VLDL), low-density (LDL), high-density (HDL) lipoprotein and lipoprotein depleted (LPDP) fractions (containing primarily albumin). The concentrations of triacylglycerols, cholesterol, phospholipids, and apolipoprotein B (apoB) were determined. The organochlorine compounds were associated with all fractions, but predominantly with the LPDP fraction. On an average 44% of CBs, 61% of MeSO₂-CBs, 73% of DDE, 77% of MeSO₂-DDE, and 45% of HCB were distributed in the LPDP fraction. A tendency to greater association of 3-methylsulfonyl substituted than of corresponding 4-methylsulfonyl substituted chlorobiphenyls to the LPDP fraction was noticed. Among the lipoprotein fractions, LDL was the main carrier of HCB, DDE and CBs. MeSO₂-DDE was predominantly found in HDL and MeSO₂-CBs were distributed equally among the LDL and HDL fractions. Calculating the concentrations of organochlorine compounds in relation to the content of apoB, the levels were about 10 times higher in VLDL than in LDL. An evaluation of seven postural reactions ("lagereflexe" selected by Vojta) in twenty-five healthy infants

Twenty-five healthy infants were followed from the newborn period to the age of eighteen months, by evaluation of their neuromotor performance. Evaluation of the specific postural reaction patterns (as described by Vojta) did not seem to be any use as a "short-cut" for the early diagnosis of neuromotor abnormalities, a considerable number of deviations from the normal/optimal pattern being noted even in completely normal infants.     

The effects of topically applied polyNIPAM-based nanogels and their monomers on skin cyclooxygenase expression,ex vivo

Stimulus-responsive nanogels have potential as carriers for drugs targeting the skin. It is important to estimate the biocompatibility of such materials with the skin since they are directly in contact upon application and may induce irritation or inflammation. In the current work, blank (drug-free) polyN-isopropylacrylamide (polyNIPAM), poly(NIPAM copolymerized butyl acrylate) [poly(NIPAM-co-BA)], and poly(NIPAM copolymerized with 5% w/v acrylic acid) [poly(NIPAM-co-AAc)(5%)] nanogels were dosed onto freshly excised full-thickness porcine ear skin and the effects on the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) determined ex vivo by Western blotting. Modulated COX-2 expression was indicative that the material had penetrated the skin and keratinocytes of the viable epidermis. The poly(NIPAM-co-BA) nanogel was found to exert a proinflammatory response when applied topically, as reflected by 67% higher COX-2 expression relative to the control treatment (p = 0.0035). The data obtained for the poly(NIPAM-co-AAc)(5%) nanogel, on the other hand, indicated no significant modulation in the expression of COX-2 (p = 0.1578), suggesting the particles are compatible with skin. This was even the case in the presence of co-administered aqueous citric acid solution. Overall the data support the use of the multi-responsive poly(NIPAM-co-AAc)(5%) nanogel for triggered or controlled topical drug delivery applications.     

Isolation and characterisation of microsatellite loci in the tire track eel,Mastacembelus favus and cross-species amplification

Nine microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized in the tire track eel, Mastacembelus favus by using library enriched for microsatellite region. Among 47 specimens collected from Mekong River, the number of alleles ranged from 2 to 17 while levels of observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.021 to 0.873 and from 0.021 to 0.893, respectively. The primers were successfully tested in six closely related species, hence valuable for investigating population genetics and other related aspects of M. favus and its congener species.     

Psychosocial Profiles among Persons with Substance Use Disorder Undergoing Islamic-Based Inabah Program in Kelantan,Malaysia

Psychosocial profiles among a convenience sample of 37 Malay Muslim participants of Inabah program were measured using the Psychological Measure of Islamic Religiousness (PMIR). Data were analysed using SPSS 23.0. Positive relations with others emerged as the best-scored subscale whereas anger trait and depressed mood were minimal. Single and divorced respondents demonstrated significantly higher score for purpose in life. More favorable social desirability was reported by participants with no previous treatment. Less anger and depression were expressed by those not detained before. Essentially, psychosocial status of persons with substance use disorder undergoing Inabah program was moderate with some influences of sociodemographic factors.     

Transmission of Clostridium difficile spores in isolation room environments and through hospital beds

The aim of this study was to determine the dissemination of Clostridium difficile (CD) spores in a hospital setting where the potassium monopersulfate‐based disinfectant Virkon^TM was used for cleaning. In the initial part of the study, we sampled 16 areas of frequent patient contact in 10 patient rooms where a patient with CD infection (CDI) had been accommodated. In the second part of the study, we obtained samples from 10 patient beds after discharge of CDI patients, both before and after the beds were cleaned. In the first part, CDspores were isolated in only 30% of the rooms. In the second part, which focused on transmission to hospital beds, C. difficile was found in four of 10 beds either before or after cleaning. In conclusion, in both parts of the study, we demonstrated a moderate spread of CD spores to the environment despite routine cleaning procedures involving Virkon^TM.
