BACKGROUND:

Psychosocial stress can be the cause or the consequence of hypertension.

OBJECTIVE:

To study the association between hypertension and anxiety or depression in adults from Hong Kong, China.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS:

Patients with diagnosed hypertension (n=197) were recruited to complete the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire. The control group comprised 182 normotensive subjects recruited using random telephone numbers.

RESULTS:

The score in the anxiety subscale (HADS-A) of the HADS correlated with age (r= −0.23, P<0.001) and sex (r=0.11, P=0.042), and was found to be higher in women. The score in the depression subscale (HADS-D) correlated with age (r=0.17, P=0.003) and hypertension (r=0.12, P=0.039), but not with sex (r=0.02, P=0.68). When the control subjects were matched for sex and age with the subjects with hypertension, the mean HADS-A score was 5.51±0.41 in 113 hypertensive subjects and 4.38±0.39 in 113 normotensive subjects (P=0.047). The mean HADS-D score was 5.56±0.39 in the hypertensive and 4.76±0.32 in the normotensive subjects (P=0.11). Multiple regression analysis using data from both groups indicated that the HADS-A score was related to the HADS-D score (β=0.49, P<0.001), age (β= −0.25, P<0.001) and sex (β=0.12, P=0.01) (R2=0.28), whereas the HADS-D score was related to the HADS-A score (β=0.48, P<0.001), age (β=0.30, P<0.001), positive smoking status (β=0.13, P=0.004) and lack of exercise habit (β=0.12, P=0.008) (R2=0.31). Hypertension was related to waist circumference, history of parental hypertension and age (R2=0.38, P<0.001). Anxiety and depression scores were rejected as independent variables.

CONCLUSIONS:

Hypertension was associated with anxiety but not depression; however, age, history of parental hypertension and central obesity appeared to have a stronger association with hypertension in adults from Hong Kong.  相似文献

Tone recognition is partially subserved by neural activity in the right frontal and primary auditory cortices. First we determined the brain areas associated with tone perception and recognition. This study then examined how regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in these and other brain regions correlates with the behavioral characteristics of a difficult tone recognition task. rCBF changes were assessed using H2(15)O positron emission tomography. Subtraction procedures were used to localize significant change regions and correlational analyses were applied to determine how response times (RT) predicted rCBF patterns. Twelve trained normal volunteers were studied in three conditions: REST, sensory motor control (SMC) and decision (DEC). The SMC-REST contrast revealed bilateral activation of primary auditory cortices, cerebellum and bilateral inferior frontal gyri. DEC-SMC produced significant clusters in the right middle and inferior frontal gyri, insula and claustrum; the anterior cingulate gyrus and supplementary motor area; the left insula/claustrum; and the left cerebellum. Correlational analyses, RT versus rCBF from DEC scans, showed a positive correlation in right inferior and middle frontal cortex; rCBF in bilateral auditory cortices and cerebellum exhibited significant negative correlations with RT These changes suggest that neural activity in the right frontal, superior temporal and cerebellar regions shifts back and forth in magnitude depending on whether tone recognition RT is relatively fast or slow, during a difficult, accurate assessment.   相似文献

Biomarkers related to the oxidative stress in blood and epidermis and the number of Langerhans cells were determined in hairless rats after acute irradiation with 1.54, 1.93, or 2.41 J/cm2 of ultraviolet (UV) light and chronic exposure to 13 suberythemal UV doses of 1.1 J/cm2 for 2 mo. After acute UV irradiation, in epidermis, the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) content increased at the highest UV dose, whereas the activities of glutathione S-transferase and catalase rose and the oxidized glutathione (GSSG) content diminished at all UV doses. In erythrocytes, glutathione S-transferase activity increased at the two lowest UV doses, glutathione peroxidase activity rose at all UV doses, and catalase activity increased after the highest UV dose. In plasma, the TBARS content and the reduced glutathione (GSH)/GSSG ratio increased at the highest UV dose; the number of Langerhans cells decreased at all UV doses. Linear Pearson correlation analysis revealed many relationships between different biomarkers, and multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the number of Langerhans cells was predicted by epidermal GSSG and catalase (R2 = .64) and by erythrocytic glutathione peroxidase and GSSG (R2 = .72). After suberythemal UV radiation, in epidermis, the GST activity and the content of GSH and GSSG increased; in erythrocytes, the GST activity decreased and the GSH/GSSG ratio increased. Thus, the hairless rat appears to be a useful model for studying the oxidative stress-related mechanisms after UV radiation, which are involved in the loss of the immune capacity mediated by Langerhans cells, even at suberythemal doses.  相似文献
