BACKGROUND: The neurobiological basis for autism remains poorly understood. Given the role of growth factors in brain development, we hypothesized that epidermal growth factor (EGF) may play a role in the pathophysiology of autism. In this study, we examined whether serum levels of EGF are altered in adult subjects with high-functioning autism. METHODS: We measured serum levels of EGF in the 17 male subjects with high-functioning autism and 18 age-matched healthy male subjects. RESULTS: The serum levels of EGF in the subjects with high-functioning autism (72.4 +/- 102.8 pg/mL [mean +/- SD]) were significantly lower (Mann-Whitney U = 22.0, p < .001) than those of normal control subjects (322.3 +/- 122.0 pg/mL [mean +/- SD]). However, there were no correlations between serum EGF levels and clinical variables in the subjects with autism. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that decreased levels of EGF might be implicated in the pathophysiology of high-functioning autism.  相似文献

To clarify cellular biological varieties of myeloma cells, biological differences were analyzed between 2 human myeloma cell lines, KMS-12-PE and KMS-12-BM, derived from pleural effusion and bone marrow, respectively, of a single patient. Although both lines were considered to be derived from the same clone because both had the same chromosomal marker and immunoglobulin H rearrangement, several biological differences were noted. CD11a and CD20 were highly expressed in the KMS-12-BM line, whereas the KMS-12-PE line showed a higher expression of CD7 and CD95/Fas. Although growth was stimulated in KMS-12-BM by interleukin-6 and interferon-alpha, it was inhibited in KMS-12-PE. In addition, apoptosis inhibitors Bcl-2 and Bcl-X(L) were highly expressed in KMS-12-BM cells. Because KMS-12-PE was cultivated 2 months before KMS-12-BM, these differences might be related to their origin (pleural effusion and bone marrow) or the phases of disease progression. However, these biological differences may help clarify myeloma cell biology and lead to improvement in treatment for myeloma patients.  相似文献

Four temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants of rat 3Y1 fibroblasts, which represent separate complementation groups, cease to proliferate predominantly with a 2C DNA content, either at 39.8 degrees (temperature arrest), or at 33.8 degrees at a confluent cell density (density arrest). When infected at 39.8 degrees with adenovirus type 12 (Ad12), cells of all four ts mutants in both arrest states entered the S phase, thereby suggesting that Ad12 overcomes the four independent functional blocks to cellular entry into S phase. Results of experiments using Ad12 E1-region mutants suggest that the E1A gene product(s) is indispensable to overcoming the ts block, whereas the E1B product(s) may be dispensable. The cell killing observed in 3Y1 cells infected with wild-type Ad12 did not occur in infection with one of the E1-region mutants with a 6-bp insertion in the E1A 13 S mRNA unique region. When infected with this mutant at 39.8 degrees, two ts mutants of 3Y1 (3Y1tsF121 and 3Y1tsG125) in both arrested states proliferated through at least one generation. Another mutant (3Y1tsD123) was accelerated to die following entry into the S phase. In the other mutant (3Y1tsH203), the cell number was either unchanged (temperature arrest) or was increased less than twofold and then decreased (density arrest). The findings with the latter two mutant lines suggest that induction of cellular DNA synthesis is not sufficient for the subsequent proliferation of the infected cells, and that the Ad12 gene function(s) does not directly rescue the primary lesions in these ts mutants but does overcome some of the blocks to concomitantly occurring events. In the former two mutant lines, however, Ad12 gene function(s) may directly rescue the ts lesions. We propose that the Ad12 gene product(s) can overcome blocks to the initiation of cellular DNA synthesis but cannot overcome blocks to events related to cell survival.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The measurement of infusion fluid temperature is important for patients' thermoregulatory management. However, we usually estimate the temperature by touching and feeling the surface of the infusion bag. Accordingly, there is increasing demand for more quantitative method to measure infusion fluid temperature. METHODS: In the operating room we evaluated the accuracy and precision of the infrared thermometer (Genius) for the measurement of infusion fluid temperature compared with the thermistor. RESULTS: The fluid temperature measured by Genius is accurate with sufficient precision compared with that measured by thermistor. CONCLUSIONS: The temperature measurement of infusion fluid by infrared thermometer is clinically helpful and useful for patients' safety.  相似文献

A study of arteriosclerosis in healthy subjects with HBV and HCV infection   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Background It is unclear whether infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) affects arteriosclerosis. We performed a cross-sectional study to clarify the effect of HBV and HCV infection on arteriosclerosis. Methods The study subjects were 1806 healthy individuals who visited Shimane Environment and Health Public Corporation for routine medical check-ups. Serum levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose were investigated in all subjects. The degree of arteriosclerosis was assessed using systolic blood pressure, the bilateral ankle brachial index (ABI), the heart-carotid pulse wave velocity (HCPWV), and the heart-ankle PWV (HAPWV). These cardiovascular parameters were compared between control subjects and subjects with HBV and HCV infection, using analysis of covariance to adjust for confounding factors (sex, age, body mass index, and smoking and drinking). Results Of the 1806 subjects, 39 and 31 were diagnosed as positive for HBV and HCV infection, respectively. The remaining 1736 were considered to be the controls. Adjusted serum lipid levels in the subjects with HBV and those with HCV infection tended to be lower than those in the control subjects. Adjusted arteriosclerotic parameters in the subjects with HBV and HCV infection were similar to those in the control subjects, even after adjusting for serum lipid levels. Conclusions Infection with HBV or HCV does not influence the severity of arteriosclerosis in healthy subjects.  相似文献
