AimEpilepsy is a common brain disorder in which the seizures could cause a neuronal loss in the hippocampus. Oxidative stress has an important role in the pathology of epilepsy. Some studies indicate that Wi-Fi increases oxidative stress and suppresses antioxidant systems. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Wi-Fi on melatonin anticonvulsive effect and oxidative damage in pentylenetetrazole-induced epileptic seizures in rats.MethodsIn our study, we used 30 male Wistar Albino rats, 230?250 grams of the body weight. The animals were divided into five groups as control, saline (1 ml/kg/day olive oil for 30 days), Wi-Fi (12 h/day for 30 days), melatonin (10 mg/kg/day for 30 days) and melatonin + Wi-Fi (10 mg/kg/day +12 h/day for 30 days). In the thirtieth day, thirty minutes after the last drugs administration at the indicated doses, PTZ in 45 mg/kg was administered to induce epileptic seizure. The animals were observed for 30 min during the seizure stages (according to the Racine Scale) and first myoclonic jerk times (FMJ). Twenty-four hours after PTZ injection, brain tissues were removed for biochemical and histopathological evaluation. The hippocampal Cornu Ammonis (CA) 1, CA3 and DG (dentate gyrus) regions were histopathologically evaluated in terms of a neuronal damage in addition that oxidative stress markers (total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI)) were measured in brain tissues.ResultsWi-Fi was not found to affect behavioral changes associated with epilepsy (p > 0.05). However, Wi-Fi reduced anticonvulsive and antioxidant effect of melatonin (p < 0.05). Moreover, Wi-Fi increased neuronal damage in hippocampus (p < 0.05).ConclusionWi-Fi did not directly affect epileptic seizures. Nevertheless, it inhibits the positive effects of melatonin on epilepsy and it also has negative effects on hippocampal neuronal damage. These effects of Wi-Fi may occur via oxidative pathways.  相似文献

Thiopental and propofol are effective antioxidant agents. The current study was undertaken to examine the neuroprotective effects of a single intraperitoneal dose of thiopental and propofol. Effects of the drugs were evaluated by lipid peroxidation and ultrastructural findings. Fifty male Wistar rats were divided into five groups. Group 1 was the control group. Rats underwent laminectomy only, and nontraumatized spinal cord samples were obtained 1 hour after surgical intervention. All other rats sustained a 50-g/cm contusion injury by the weight drop technique. Group 2 rats underwent spinal cord injury alone, group 3 rats received 1 mL intralipid solution intraperitoneally immediately after trauma as the vehicle group, group 4 rats received a 15-mg/kg single dose of thiopental, and group 5 rats received a 40-mg/kg single dose of propofol intraperitoneally following the trauma. Samples from groups 2, 3, 4, and 5 were obtained 1 hour after injury. Lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring the concentration of malondialdehyde in the spinal cord tissue. The ultrastructure of the spinal cord was determined by electron microscopy. The contusion injury was associated with a rise in lipid peroxidation. Compared with the trauma group there was significant attenuation in lipid peroxidation of groups 4 and 5. Ultrastructural findings showed that the rats of group 4 sustained minor damage after spinal cord injury, but there was more evident damage in group 5 rats. These results indicate that thiopental decreases lipid peroxidation and improves ultrastructure, whereas propofol decreases lipid peroxidation without improving ultrastructure 1 hour after spinal cord injury in rats.  相似文献

Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) has been estimated to occur in 10 to 50% of children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA). Thirty-eight children with JCA were evaluated and their nutritional status determined, and they were compared with 23 healthy sex and age-matched children as controls. A standardized, 9-parameter comprehensive nutritional assessment profile was used. The simple anthropometric measurements, height and weight for age, were abnormal in 30% and 27% of the patients, respectively. A detailed evaluation revealed that 71% had abnormal somatic protein stores, and that they also had significantly low levels of visceral protein stores, when compared to their healthy peers. The results were consistent with the fact that inflammation put the JCA patients at significant risk for developing complicated malnutrition and it might result in PEM without any obvious signs of malnutrition. A nutritional screening test would be very useful in detecting early PEM in children with chronic arthritis.  相似文献

Serum bcl-2 and survivin levels in melanoma   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study was conducted to investigate the serum levels of bcl-2 and survivin in patients with melanoma and the relationship with tumour progression and known prognostic parameters. Forty-four patients with cutaneous melanoma were investigated. Serum samples were obtained on first admission before adjuvant and metastatic treatment were given and at follow-up. Serum bcl-2 and survivin levels were determined using enzyme immunometric assay (EIA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The baseline serum bcl-2 levels were significantly higher in patients with melanoma than in the control group (P=0.01). For the serum survivin levels, no difference was found (P=0.6). No significant correlations were found between the prognostic parameters analysed and the serum survivin concentrations. The same was true of the serum bcl-2 values, except for the age of the patient (P=0.025) and nodal involvement (P=0.003). No significant relationship was found between the serum levels of bcl-2 and survivin (r=-0.13, P=0.4). In node-positive patients (n=8) both of these anti-apoptotic substances were unchanged after interferon-alpha-2b therapy. However, serum survivin concentrations were significantly increased in 10 patients with metastatic melanoma who underwent dacarbazine (DTIC)-based cytotoxic chemotherapy (P=0.047). A similar finding was not determined for the serum bcl-2 levels. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that decreased apoptosis is associated partly with an increase in serum bcl-2. However, much research continues in this field, and exciting new knowledge will ultimately emerge.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Several suture materials are used for pancreatojejunal anastomosis. In this study, we tested the durability of these suture materials in human pancreatic juice and bile. METHODS: Plain and chromic catgut, polyglactin 910, polyglycolic acid, polydioxanone, polypropylene, and silk sutures were incubated in pancreatic juice and bile that was collected from patients. Fifteen samples of each type of suture material were placed in human juices for 1, 3, and 7 days. Tensile strengths were measured with a tensionmeter. RESULTS: Plain and chromic catgut disintegrated in pancreatic juice and pancreatic juice plus bile mixture. Polyglycolic acid and polyglactin 910 suture materials were vulnerable to pancreatic juice within 7 days. Polydioxanone retained most of its initial strength in pancreatic juice and bile. Polypropylene and silk retained 84% and 92% of their initial strength, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: We found that polidioxanone was the strongest suture material in pancreatic juice.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe a forearm heterotopic ovarian transplantation technique. DESIGN: Case study. SETTING: Academic medical center. PATIENT(S): One patient with stage IIIB squamous cell cervical carcinoma and one patient with recurrent benign ovarian cysts. INTERVENTION(S): Preparation of thin ovarian cortical slices and transplantation under the skin of the forearm. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Follicular development and oocyte retrieval; cyclical estradiol (E(2)) and progesterone (P(4)) production; restoration of serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels to reproductive age range. RESULT(S): Both patients were menopausal immediately after oophorectomy. The first patient developed a dominant follicle 10 weeks after transplantation, and her gonadotropin levels decreased to nonmenopausal levels. Percutaneous aspiration of ovarian follicles yielded a metaphase I (M-I) oocyte that was matured to metaphase II (M-II). The first patient's graft was functional for at least 21 months. In the second patient, ovarian follicle development was detected 6 months after transplantation, and periodic menstruation occurred thereafter. Spontaneous ovulation was confirmed by a midluteal increase in her P(4) levels. Menstruation and follicle development continued for more than 2 years after the transplant. CONCLUSION(S): Heterotopic transplantation of ovarian tissue to the forearm is a simple and promising technique to restore ovarian function in women who become menopausal due to chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to retrospectively investigate a single institution's experience with carotid artery resection performed as part of an oncological procedure and to determine acute and convalescent complication and survival rates. We performed a record review of 28 patients with head and neck malignancy invading the carotid artery. Immediate carotid artery resection and ligation on an emergent basis was performed on 12 patients (group 1), elective resection and ligation was performed on 8 patients (group 2), and elective resection and revascularization was performed on 8 patients (group 3). In group 1, although 1 patient survived for 1 year and 1 patient survived for 2 years, 1 patient died of severe neurologic deficit, 2 patients experienced neurologic deficit with good recovery, and 1 patient was moderately disabled. In group 2, 2 patients survived without disease for 5 years, and 2 patients experienced neurologic deficit, 1 with good recovery and the other with complete recovery. In group 3, only 1 patient survived for 5 years, and within this group, 1 patient died of severe neurologic deficit, 1 patient had neurologic deficit with moderate recovery, and 1 patient had neurologic deficit with complete recovery. No significant difference in mortality and morbidity rate was observed between the "resection and ligation" group and the "resection and revascularization" group (p = .52, chi(2) = 0.79). We conclude that the surgical treatment of patients with an invaded carotid artery, including carotid resection, provides a small but real chance of 5-year survival. The methods of carotid resection and repair should be guided by clinical presentation and by preoperative and intraoperative investigations.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Rotor's syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by functional hyperbilirubinemia. Treatment decision may be challenging in a cancer patient with Rotor's syndrome, since the majority of the antineoplastic agents are metabolized in the liver and excreted via the biliary system. We report the first case of paclitaxel administration in a patient with ovarian cancer and elevated bilirubin levels due to Rotor's syndrome. CASE: A 50-year-old woman with Rotor's syndrome had an exploratory laparotomy and was diagnosed to have stage IIIC epithelial ovarian cancer. The baseline serum bilirubin value was 15.3 mg/dL. She was started on a 50% dose of 87.5 mg/m(2) paclitaxel by 3-h infusion plus carboplatin AUC-6. The paclitaxel dose was increased by 25% at consecutive cycles until the standard dose of 175 mg/m(2)/3 h was achieved. Six cycles were administered without any metabolic derangement. The patient was rendered disease free with this treatment. CONCLUSION: Paclitaxel appears to be safe to administer to cancer patients with functional hyperbilirubinemia.  相似文献
