Alcaligenes xylosoxidans is non-fermenting gram-negative bacilli found in soil and water. It is an aerobic bacterium in the genus Achromobacter. This bacterium is motile, oxidase positive, and catalase positive, which is isolated uncommonly from clinical specimens. In the present paper, we report a case of meningitis associated with A. xylosoxidans in a 38-year-old male patient post neurosurgery.  相似文献

An increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and insufficient antioxidant activity is known in diabetes mellitus (DM). Antioxidant compounds in the human foods or supplementary diets can be used to counteract several diseases. The analysis of micronuclei (MN) is a cytogenetic technique used to show chromosomal damage caused by clastogenic affects. The present study was designed to evaluate: (i) the effects of diabetes mellitus on bone marrow MN frequency, (ii) the effect of oral administration of Ulva rigida ethanolic extract (URE) on MN frequency produced by DM, and (iii) some hematological values in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Daily fluid and food consumptions, weekly body weights, blood glucose concentrations and serum insulin levels were also examined in the study groups during the two different administration periods. The blood glucose concentration and MN frequency have been significantly increased in diabetic rats compared with the normal rats (p < 0.0001). Especially, URE-30d group treatment in diabetic rats was significantly decreased blood glucose concentrations and MN frequency. This is the first report on the anti-hyperglycemic, anti-oxidative and genotoxic/antigenotoxic capacity of U. rigida in vivo. Our results suggest that URE shows strong anti-hyperglycemic and antigenotoxic effect on the genotoxicity produced by DM in rats.  相似文献

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) appears to enhance wound healing, increase bactericidal activity, and act synergistically with a number of antibiotics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of HBOT as an adjunctive therapy in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) treated with a combination of systemic rifampicin and clindamycin. The study was a prospective, single‐center, single‐dose, open‐label, randomized controlled clinical study of HBOT in patients with moderate to severe HS. Efficacy was measured by modified Sartorius score (SS), HS Severity Index (HSSI), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and a visual analog scale (VAS) before treatment and after the completion of 4 and 10 weeks of treatment. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C‐reactive protein (CRP) levels were also measured. Forty‐three patients were enrolled in the study. More patients in the HBOT than in the control group showed a decrease of ≥50% from baseline parameters at week 10 for SS (100%), HSSI (100%), DLQI (95.5%), VAS (100%), ESR (100%), and CRP (72.7%). Clinically and statistically significant improvements from baseline were observed at 4 and 10 weeks in HSSI (= 0.009 at both), SS (= 0.021 at both), and DLQI (= 0.044 at week 4, = 0.009 at week 10). Adjunctive HBOT was considered to be effective in significantly improving antibiotic treatment of HS. The treatment was well tolerated, and no unexpected safety issues were identified.  相似文献

The authors describe a technique for performing a safe and controlled continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC) in white cataracts using the contrast-enhancing effect of green light from an endoillumination probe. After attaching a green filter to the endoillumination unit of the vitrectomy set, a CCC was performed under the green light of the endoillumination probe, which was placed on the periphery of the cornea in a manner that followed the tearing edge of the capsulorhexis. This technique may be an alternative to capsular dyes in performing a safe and controlled CCC in white cataracts.  相似文献

Pathogenesis of leukoaraiosis (LA) is not clearly understood and its significance in patients with stroke remains undetermined. In the Neurology Department of Ankara Hospital, computed tomography (CT) examination of brain was performed for various reasons in 288 patients. LA was detected in 178 patients by the use of brain CT. Patients with LA had a higher incidence of hypertension history (70.8%) when compared with the non-LA group (57.3%; p <.05). There was no statistically significant difference in terms of sex, mean age, smoking, diabetes mellitus, history of cerebrovascular disease, cardiac failure, ischemic cardiac disease between patients with and without LA. We showed that LA is related to hypertension but not related to age, diabetes mellitus, or cardiac disease in our patient population.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of antidepressant use and gender in the genesis of rapid-cycling bipolar illness. METHOD: The charts of bipolar patients treated at the Massachusetts General Hospital Bipolar Clinic (Boston, Mass.) were reviewed for gender, presence or absence of rapid cycling, and antidepressant use prior to first mania. RESULTS: Data were obtained for 129 bipolar patients (55% women), 45% of whom had experienced a rapid-cycling course. Overall, there was no significant difference in the rates of rapid cycling between the subjects who were exposed to antidepressants prior to their first manic/ hypomanic episode and those who were not. Additional analysis carried out separately by gender found a significant association between rapid cycling and antidepressant use prior to first mania/hypomania for women but not for men. A logistic regression analysis with rapid cycling as dependent variable revealed a significant interaction between antidepressant use prior to first mania/hypomania and gender. CONCLUSION: We found a gender-specific relationship between antidepressant use prior to first manic/hypomanic episode and rapid-cycling bipolar illness. When antidepressants are prescribed to depressed women who have a risk of bipolar disorder, the risk of inducing rapid cycling should be considered. Differing proportions of women and men in previous studies may account for conflicting results reported in the literature for the relationship of antidepressants and rapid cycling. However, this naturalistic trial was uncontrolled, and controlled research is required to confirm our findings.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Reduced salivary flow has been reported in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) treatment. Our aim was to investigate the most important factors associated with stimulated salivary flow rate (ssfr) in chronic HD patients. METHODS: Fifty HD patients (27 F, 23 M, mean age 46. 7 +/- 13.2 years) were divided into two groups according to the duration of HD treatment as those receiving HD therapy less than or equal to (group I) or those more than (group II) 24 months. Fasting blood samples were obtained to determine hepatitis B and C serology, and biochemical and hematological parameters before a HD session. After prestimulation with a standard weight paraffin wax, stimulated saliva was collected in the HD patients and control group (23 F, 25 M, mean age 45.7 +/- 19.1 years) and the flow rate was expressed as ml/min. RESULTS: Both HD groups consisted of 25 patients. There was no significant difference between the two HD groups other than serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels and presence of HCV. The ssfr was decreased than controls in both groups (0.8 +/- 0.6 and 0.7 +/- 0.4, respectively, vs. 1.5 +/- 0.5 ml/min) and it did not correlate with any parameter. Smoking had a positive effect on ssfr in all groups. CONCLUSION: Although the salivary flow rate decreased significantly in chronic HD patients, the duration of therapy displayed no effect on the salivary changes in HD patients, but smoking increased ssfr.  相似文献

The study was designed to investigate the cerebrospinal fluid and serum levels of neuron-specific enolase, along with cranial ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and electroencephalography (EEG), for predicting the clinical state and neurologic outcome of 26 asphyxiated term newborns. The babies were graded according to the Sarnat and Sarnat classification. Cerebrospinal fluid neuron-specific enolase levels of the 18 babies in the whole hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy group were higher than the 8 babies in the "no encephalopathy" group. Cerebrospinal fluid neuron-specific enolase levels of 13 cases in the hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy grade 2 and 3 groups (high-risk group) were higher than both the no encephalopathy and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy grade 1 groups when pooled. Cerebrospinal fluid neuron-specific enolase levels of the 7 newborns in the hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy grade 3 group were also significantly higher than the 5 in the hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy grade 1 group. The findings of cranial MRI, EEG, and cerebrospinal fluid neuron-specific enolase levels were correlated with each other and the clinical grade of the patients and also were predictive of the neurologic outcome at 1 year of age. Cerebrospinal fluid neuron-specific enolase levels, cranial MRI, and EEG are predictive of outcome of hypoxic-ischemic brain damage in asphyxiated newborns, and this predictivity would increase with the combination of these diagnostic parameters.  相似文献

Proprioceptive mechanisms appear to play a role in stabilizing the joints and may serve as a means for interplay between static stabilizers and dynamic muscular restraints. The purpose of our study was to investigate whether or not gymnastic training has any effect on the balance and on proprioception in an ankle, as seen in gymnasts and in nongymnasts. We evaluated the proprioceptive ability of the ankle using four different tests (a one-leg-standing test, a single-limb-hopping test, an active angle-reproduction test, and a passive angle-reproduction test). Proprioception of the ankle was measured in 40 subjects who were assigned to two experimental groups. Group 1 (n: 20) were healthy control subjects, and group 2 (n: 20) were teenaged female gymnasts. The sense of position of a joint was actively measured using a Cybex NORMTM isokinetic dynamometer and measured passively with a proprioception-testing device. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare mean values of the gymnasts to the controls. Results revealed statistically significant differences (p<0.05) between two groups. We found no statistically significant differences between the dominant and nondominant ankle in volunteers or in gymnasts, in all tests. The results of this study suggest that gymnastic training has a positive influence on sense of position of the ankle joint and on balance, in addition to increasing muscle tone.  相似文献
