The Annual Meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) is a diverse conference covering all topics in cell biology. While all of the basic biology presented at this meeting may potentially contribute to breast cancer research, there were a significant number of presentations and posters directly pertinent to this field. Here we have summarized the research that is of greatest immediate relevance to breast cancer, with particular emphasis on mammary gland development and tumorigenesis in vivo, three-dimensional in vitro models of mammary morphogenesis, alterations of signal transduction pathways in breast cancer, and global studies in expression profiling and drug screening.     

Can laparoscopic hernia repair alter function and volume of testis? Randomized clinical trial

Testicular atrophy is a sequela of inguinal hernioplasty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Lichtenstein (LHR) and laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) hernia repair techniques on testicular function and volume. This study is a randomized prospective clinical trial with the blind assessment of outcome. A total of 26 patients who underwent elective herniorrhaphy for groin hernia were included in the study. Each patient was randomly assigned into one of two groups: either TEP or LHR (n = 13 for each). Six of the patients had bilateral hernia (n = 3 for each group). Luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone levels, and testicular volume by Doppler ultrasonography were detected just before and 3 months after the operation. LH, FSH levels did not change, when compared preoperative and postoperatively in both groups. Testicular volume and testosterone levels were observed to be significantly decreased after TEP when compared with LHR while no significant preoperative changes were observed between those groups. This affected the testicular volume in normal limits. TEP or LHR could not affect LH, FSH, testosterone values, but TEP could lead a decreasing effect on volume of testis in normal limits.     

HYDROPS FETALIS IN A NEONATE WITH DOWN SYNDROME, TRANSIENT MYELOPROLIFERATIVE DISORDER AND HEPATIC FIBROSIS

Transient myeloproliferative disorder is a self limiting disorder characterized by leukocytosis with the presence of megakaryoblasts in the peripheral blood and bone marrow, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and organomegaly. It occurs in approximately 10% of newborn infants with Down syndrome. Hepatic fibrosis is seen in the severe form of transient myeloproliferative disorder with Down syndrome that is characterized by diffuse intralobular sinusoidal fibrosis and extramedullary hematopoesis. We describe a patient with hydrops fetalis, Down syndrome, and transient myeloproliferative disorder. We suggest that patients with the severe form of transient myeloproliferative disorder should be examined for hepatic fibrosis.     

Effect of smoking on retina nerve fiber layer and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer complex

Purpose: The aim of this study is to show the effects of smoking on retina layers, especially retina nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer complex (GCIPL).

Materials and methods: Participants smoking for more than 10 years at least 1 pack of cigarettes a day and a control group, both including participants between ages of 20 and 50 years with no other systemic or ocular diseases were studied. After normality tests, an independent sample t test was used to analyze the differences in age, sex, spherical equivalent (SE), intraocular pressure (IOP), axial length (AL), GCIPL and RNFL values between the groups.

Results: There were 44 participants in each group. There were 32 (62.5%) men and 12(37.5%) women in smokers and 36 (77.88%) men and 8 (22.22%) women in control group. Mean ages were 39.85?±?8.41 and 38.66?±?10.47 years, mean spherical equivalent (SE) values were ?0.15?±?0.4 and 0?±?0.29 dioptries in smokers and control groups, respectively. The IOP, AXL, GCIPL and RNFL values were 17.58?±?3.41?mmHg, 23.69?±?0.56?mm, 84.3?±?5.83?μm and 92.3?±?3.51?μm in the smokers group and 18.5?±?2.91?mmHg, 23.45?±?0.72?mm, 86.11?±?8.02?μm and 97.66?±?8.23?μm in the control group. The inferior, superior, nasal and temporal values of RNFL quadrants were 123.18?±?26.14, 117.05?±?5.51, 64.95?±?8.67 and 63.5?±?6.88?μm in the smokers group and 130.81?±?11.8, 123.55?±?11.03, 72.44?±?9.84 and 58.44?±?7.48?μm in the control group. There were no significant difference of age, sex, SE, IOP, AXL and GCIPL values between the smokers and control groups (p?>?0.05). The mean RNFL was significantly thinner in the smokers group compared to controls (p?=?0.03, independent t test). Inferior and superior quadrants of RNFL decreased in smokers group (p?=?0.01 and p?=?0.03, respectively) but temporal and nasal quadrants did not seem to be changed (p?=?0.96 and p?=?0.07, respectively).

Discussion: Smoking may affect RNFL thickness but not GCIPL.     

As an alternative implant filler material: natural honey (experimental study)

Breast implants consist of hollow silicone shells filled with either medical-grade silicone gel or sterile saline. Although these implants have a long history of clinical use, they have some drawbacks; these drawbacks have been reported in several long-term studies. Honey obtained from beehives was found to be sterile. In addition, its beneficial effect on wound healing have been known for several years. The use of nsatural honey as an alternative filler material to saline or silicone gel has been studied. Honey-filled implants were studied in terms of physical properties, radiographic characteristics, and biocompatibility in an in vivo animal model. This study demonstrated that honey-filled implants have more radiolucency than silicone gel and have a higher viscosity than saline. The in vivo study showed that honey-filled implants were biocompatible and caused less tissue reaction than silicone gel. The follow-up period was not long enough to demonstrate its long-term effects. It may be that natural honey has great potential that is worth investigating further as an implant filler material.     

Lung parenchymal changes in patients with ankylosing spondylitis

AIM: To assess lung parenchymal changes in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) using high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). METHODS: We included 78 AS patients whose average age was 33.87 (18-56) years with a ratio of 53 males to 25 females who were followed up for 3.88 (1-22) years on average. neumonia and tuberculosis were excluded. In a detailed examination of lung HRCT findings, we investigated the presence of parenchymal micronodules,parenchymal bands, subpleural bands, interlobular and intralobular septal thickening, irregularity of interfaces,ground glass opacity, consolidation, mosaic pattern,bronchial wall thickening, bronchial dilatation, tracheal dilatation, pleural thickening, emphysema, thoracic cage asymmetry, honeycomb appearance, structural distortion, apical fibrosis and other additional findings.RESULTS: In detailed HRCT evaluations, lung parenchymal changes were found in 46 (59%) of all patients. We found parenchymal bands in 21 (27%) cases, interlobular septal thickening in 9 (12%), emphysema in 9 (12%), apical fibrosis in 8 (10%), ground-glass opacities in 7 (9%), parenchymal micronodules in 5 (6%), irregularity in interfaces in 3 (4%), bronchial dilatation in 3 (4%), mosaic pattern in 2 (3%), pleural thickening in 2 (3%), consolidation in 1 (1%), bronchial wall thick ening in 1 (1%) and a subpleural band in 1 (1%) case. Furthermore, we detected subsegmental atelectasis in 2 patients and a cavitary lesion in 1 patient. CONCLUSION: Our study had the highest number of AS cases of all previous studies in evaluating lung paren chymal changes. The rate of lung parenchymal changes was slightly lower than that reported in recent literature.     

Intraocular antibody synthesis against rubella virus and other microorganisms in Fuchs' heterochromic cyclitis

Sexual dysfunction in patients with chronic hand eczema in the Turkish population

IntroductionHand eczema can cause considerable psychosocial disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and difficulties at work, and it may also cause sexual dysfunction.AimThe aim of this study was to investigate sexual function in patients with hand eczema and to find out whether concomitant depression has an additional negative effect on sexual function in these patients.Main Outcome MeasuresSexual functions were evaluated in hand eczema patients.MethodsNinety-one female (43 patients vs. 48 controls) and 79 male (45 patients vs. 34 controls) subjects were enrolled in the study. Hand eczema severity index was used to determine severity of hand eczema. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) were used to assess sexual function. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index. Diagnosis of depression was made based on the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV, while the Hamilton Depression Rate Scale was used for grading depression.ResultsAmong 43 female subjects with hand eczema, 26 had depression (60.46%); of the 45 male patients, 11 had depression (24.44%). FSFI total score was found to be significantly decreased in female patients with both eczema and depression compared with controls (20.84 ± 9.19 vs. 24.04 ± 3.40, P < 0.05). FSFI total score was found to be significantly decreased in female patients with both eczema and depression compared with those without depression (20.84 ± 9.19 vs. 22.23 ± 5.82, P < 0.05). IIEF total score was also found to be significantly decreased in male patients with or without depression compared with controls (52.36 ± 14.83 vs. 59.88 ± 5.65 vs. 62.03 ± 11.04, P < 0.05).ConclusionsThe results of the study demonstrated that patients with hand eczema had sexual dysfunction, and concomitant depression had an additional negative effect on sexual dysfunction. Patients with hand eczema should be evaluated with regard to sexual function and depression to provide a better quality of life. Forehead Lift: A Combined Approach Using Subperiosteal and Subgaleal Dissection Planes

The eyelid–eyebrow region is the center for facial expression. Youth and beauty are associated with smooth, wrinkle-free skin and proportional facial features. The position of the eyebrows conveys emotion, and consequently, even a minor change in brow position can alter the expression of an individual's face. Repositioning the eyebrows and reducing the prominence of the glabellar frown lines can change the expression from one of anger and hostility to one that is more pleasant and natural. Various methods have been used for rejuvenation of the upper face. The height or length of the forehead is a useful guide for choosing the appropriate technique. We performed the coronal browlift using the subgaleal dissection plane, with subperiosteal dissection of 2.5 cm of the periosteal band over the supraorbital rim. We believe that this technique provided us with the benefits of the two dissection planes, with a more permanent result.
