ObjectiveRecent studies have suggested that nuts have favorable effects beyond lipid lowering. We aimed to investigate effect of the Antep pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) on blood glucose, lipid parameters, endothelial function, inflammation, and oxidation in healthy young men living in a controlled environment.MethodsA Mediterranean diet was administered to normolipidemic 32 healthy young men (mean age 22 y, range 21–24) for 4 wk. After 4 wk, participants continued to receive the Mediterranean diet but pistachio was added for 4 wk by replacing the monounsaturated fat content constituting ≈20% of daily caloric intake. Fasting blood samples and brachial endothelial function measurements were performed at baseline and after each diet.ResultsCompared with the Mediterranean diet, the pistachio diet decreased glucose (P < 0.001, ?8.8 ± 8.5%), low-density lipoprotein (P < 0.001, ?23.2 ± 11.9%), total cholesterol (P < 0.001, ?21.2 ± 9.9%), and triacylglycerol (P = 0.008, ?13.8 ± 33.8%) significantly and high-density lipoprotein (P = 0.069, ?3.1 ± 11.7%) non-significantly. Total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein/high-density lipoprotein ratios decreased significantly (P < 0.001 for both). The pistachio diet significantly improved endothelium-dependent vasodilation (P = 0.002, 30% relative increase), decreased serum interleukin-6, total oxidant status, lipid hydroperoxide, and malondialdehyde and increased superoxide dismutase (P < 0.001 for all), whereas there was no significant change in C-reactive protein and tumor necrosis factor-α levels.ConclusionIn this trial, we demonstrated that a pistachio diet improved blood glucose level, endothelial function, and some indices of inflammation and oxidative status in healthy young men. These findings are in accordance with the idea that nuts, in particular pistachio nuts, have favorable effects beyond lipid lowering that deserve to be evaluated with prospective follow-up studies.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To assess the surgical outcomes of the use of tissue glue to close sclerotomy sites when required and the views of ultrasound biomicroscopy of the sclerotomy sites in 23- and 25-gauge vitrectomy systems. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy was performed in 38 eyes and a 23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy was performed in 46 eyes for various vitreoretinal diseases. Wound leakage occurred at the sclerotomy sites at the end of the surgery in 6 eyes with 23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy and 7 eyes with 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy. The sclerotomy sites were closed by using tissue glue to prevent wound leakage and evaluated with ultrasound biomicroscopy postoperatively. RESULTS: No wound leakage was observed at the end of the surgical procedure or during the follow-up period. Abnormal fibrous ingrowth was not detected at the sclerotomy sites by means of ultrasound biomicroscopy. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated the efficacy of tissue glue for closing site ports when wound leakage is observed in transconjunctival sutureless vitreoretinal surgery.  相似文献

Nonclassical target organs recently defined for vitamin D, a major regulator of calcium phosphorus homeostasis and bone health, include reproductive ones. This compilation study focuses on the potential effects of vitamin D on female reproductive functions. Vitamin D receptor enzymes that metabolize vitamin D are expressed in both central and peripheral reproductive organs. Most studies suggest that vitamin D may be directly or indirectly related to gonadal functions. Vitamin D's effects on reproductive functions may be indirectly related to diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), uterine leiomyomas, and endometriosis. In case of vitamin D deficiency during infertility treatment, vitamin D supplementation can be recommended especially for women who have PCOS, insulin resistance, or low anti-Mullerian hormone levels. Supplementation, however, should take into account possible toxic effects of high-dose vitamin D. To be able to recommend measuring vitamin D as a routine screening test and to better understand the effects of vitamin D and its supplementation on female reproductive functions, larger randomized controlled prospective studies are needed.  相似文献

This paper examines the issues surrounding low-income immigrants in the U.S. and the ways they shape the educational experiences of their young children. Using a multidisciplinary lens including sociology, family studies, education, and mental health, the authors analyse multiple perspectives towards the educational experiences of children in low-income immigrant families. After providing a sample case study focusing on the educational experiences of Burmese refugee parents with early elementary education (Grades K through 3) in the Midwestern United States, the authors frame desirable responses from policy and practice that would best support the educational experiences of young children in low-income immigrant families including (a) understanding cultural strengths, (b) creating a positive and inclusive classroom environment, (c) supporting bilingual and bicultural competencies, (d) providing immigrant families with leadership opportunities, (e) teacher professional development on mental health and poverty, and (f) building integrated supports for the family.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: A major problem in ocular therapeutics with classical formulations is the maintenance of an effective drug concentration at the site of action for a long period of time. Enhancement of ocular bioavailability with increased dose penetration and longer retention time at desired sites can be achieved by recent formulations. Chitosan stands out with its unique structural advantageous characteristics for different types of formulations like in situ gelling systems, micro- and nanoparticles, inserts, etc. AREAS COVERED: In this review, the authors focus on ocular therapeutics and the characteristics that make chitosan more acceptable in ocular applications. EXPERT OPINION: Chitosan seems to be one of the most promising polymeric carriers for both hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs for ocular application.  相似文献

Background

Soda manufacturers claim that caffeine is added to soda as a flavor enhancer, but many researchers have speculated that caffeine is added to increase the hedonic and reinforcing properties of the soda. Studies in adults have demonstrated that caffeine can condition flavor preferences when added to novel-flavored beverages.

Objectives

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that caffeine added to novel-flavored drinks would increase liking and preference in adolescents.

Methods

Adolescents (n?=?99) between the ages of 12 and 17 rated and ranked seven novel soda drinks. They were then randomly assigned to consume one of these beverages paired with either caffeine (1 or 2 mg/kg) or placebo over four consecutive days and rate liking. On the final visit, participants retasted the seven beverages and provided hedonic ratings and rankings.

Results

Participants in the 2-mg/kg caffeine group increased the liking of the beverage over the exposure period after an initial decrease, but there was no change in liking for those in the placebo group or in the 1-mg/kg group. The increase in liking in the 2-mg/kg group was accompanied by a decrease in perceived bitterness, but no change in beverage ranking or consumption during the post-test.

Conclusions

Caffeine added to novel beverages results in a decrease in liking followed by an increase in liking with repeated exposures that may result from habituation to the bitterness of caffeine. Change in bitter perception may be the mechanism by which adolescents establish regular caffeine use.  相似文献

Stress is defined as the exposure of an individual to a threatening stimulus or overwhelming event. Increased rates of psychological distress have been established in patients with chronic diseases compared to healthy individuals. The objective of the present study is to assess the indicators and correlates of psychological distress in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. We evaluated the stress exposure (stressful events that COPD patients and control subjects had been exposed) by a life events checklist and psychological distress by General Health Questionnaire in 74 COPD patients and 30 control subjects. Serum adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol levels were measured as biochemical indicators of stress. Distress score was higher in COPD group compared to age‐matched controls, although the stress exposure score were not statistically different; indicating that COPD itself is a source of distress. 92% of COPD patients and 87% of control subjects had varying degrees of distress. Severe distress was more frequent in COPD group. Distress score was further increased in patients with severe COPD and severe hypoxemia.There was no significant difference in serum ACTH and cortisol levels of COPD patients and control subjects and distress scores were not correlated to serum ACTH and cortisol levels. However, serum cortisol was higher in patients with severe hypoxemia. These findings support the importance of screening for psychological distress symptoms in COPD outpatients. Since high degree of distress contributes to impaired quality of life and added morbidity, patients with COPD need a comprehensive care including a psychological evaluation. The perception of dyspnoea differs between subjects with obstructive pulmonary diseases, partly because the underlying mechanisms for bronchoconstriction are different. We investigated the perception of bronchoconstriction in subjects with bronchiectasis, asthma and chronic bronchitis and possible contributing factors. Forty-seven non-smoking subjects with bronchiectasis, 50 subjects with asthma and 31 with chronic bronchitis were challenged with histamine. The Borg score was assessed before and after each challenge. The perception score corresponding to a fall in the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)) by 20% (PS(20)) was calculated. The mean values of DeltaBorg/DeltaFEV(1) (the Borg score change divided by the change in FEV(1) as a percentage of the baseline FEV(1)) and PS(20) of subjects with bronchiectasis and chronic bronchitis were significantly lower than in subjects with asthma after histamine challenge. The ratio of non-perceivers was higher in bronchiectasis (25.5%) and in chronic bronchitis (32.3%) than in asthma (4.0%). When all subjects were considered, DeltaBorg/DeltaFEV(1) values were significantly related to female sex ( r (2)=11.5%, P =0.0001), but not to age, duration of the disease, PD(20) or baseline FEV(1)%. The present study indicates that perception of histamine-induced bronchoconstriction is lower in patients with bronchiectasis and chronic bronchitis than in asthmatic patients, and that sex partially contributes to this difference.  相似文献
