Simultaneous detection of As and Se in polyester resin skin phantoms

It is known that As and Se act as metabolic antagonists. Hence, an improvement in assessing As-related health risks can be achieved by simultaneous quantitative measurements of both As and Se levels in the human body. In this paper, the simultaneous detection of trace concentrations of As and Se in polyester resin skin phantoms was demonstrated. The experiments were performed with a commercial miniature X-ray tube and silicon PiN detector X-ray fluorescence (XRF) system. No significant overlap between the K_α peaks of the two elements was observed. Minimum detection limits of (1.05±0.02) μg As g^?1 and (0.88±0.02) μg Se g^?1 were found.

Infection by the HIV virus and transfusions. Study of 38 pediatric cases

We report the cases of 38 children with transfusion-associated HIV infection: 18 hemophiliacs and 2 patients with Von Willebrand disease, 6 with hemoglobinopathies, 8 with malignant diseases or aplastic anemia, 2 transfused during neonatal period and 2 during a surgical operation. Two groups with a different prognosis were found: In group A [hemophilia and Von Willebrand disease (n = 20)] 17 patients were asymptomatic or only with lymphadenopathy; 3 reached stage IV and none died. In group B [Others (n = 14)] 2 patients were asymptomatic, 4 reached stage IV and 8 died, 4 of them directly from AIDS. The difference between both groups was statistically significant. Prognosis of HIV infection is particularly severe in patients with leukemia, malignant tumors and aplastic anemia.     

Oncologic complications and cytogenetic features of ataxia telangiectasia

A very high incidence of cancers (10%) is recorded in patients homozygous for ataxia telangiectasia (AT). From 1970 to 1987, 35 children were investigated in the department of pediatric neurology in Lille. Three developed a malignancy (one hepatic tumor, one Hodgkin's disease and one non Hodgkin's lymphoma). Constitutional chromosome fragility and immune deficiency are the main features of AT. The first one is probably linked to the pathogenesis of malignancies. Moreover, cancer therapy has to take these features into account.     

Latanoprost-associated recurrent herpes simplex keratitis

PURPOSE/METHOD: We present a case of a patient who developed recurrent epithelial herpes simplex keratitis after starting treatment with latanoprost. Her ophthalmic history was only remarkable for a past episode of herpetic keratitis 21 years previously. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Episodes of herpetic keratitis were under remission only when latanoprost was discontinued. No recurrences of herpes simplex keratitis have been observed since then. Latanoprost usage might be associated with recurrent episodes of herpes simplex keratitis in patients with previous history of ocular herpes simplex virus infection.     

Peripheral multineuritis pointing at systemic sarcoidosis

We report a patient with a peripheral neuropathy as the first symptom of sarcoidosis. The systemic illness was proved by the presence of typic granulomes in the bone marrow. The fact that sarcoidosis is the cause for the neuropathy is supported by the temporary relation and by the good response of all clinical picture to the corticosteroid therapy.Sarcoid neuropathy can rarely be the presenting feature of sarcoidosis.
