A simple dual pressure-ejection system and calibration method for brief local applications of drugs and modified salines

We report a minimal method for dual pressure ejection through a single micropipette, which uses standard theta-type glass tubing and a connection through thinned polythene catheters without any sealing. We also describe a simple calibration method using a standard electrometer. The linearity of the ejected volume with respect to pulse duration and to applied pressure was maintained, as measured by the resistivity of ultrapure water after ejection of a saline solution. The method was used to analyse the inhibitory effect of glutamate on crayfish motoneurones with local and reversible applications of low-chloride saline and picrotoxin.     

Deep brain stimulation: a review of basic research and clinical studies

Deep brain stimulation for pain control in humans was first used almost 30 years ago and has continued to receive considerable attention. Despite the large number of clinical reports describing pain relief, numerous studies have indicated that the results of these procedures vary considerably. In addition, many neurosurgeons find the procedures unpredictable, and considerable disagreement still exists regarding important issues related to the technique itself. This review gives an historical overview of the relevant basic and clinical literature and provides a critical examination of the clinical efficacy, choice of stimulation sites, parameters of stimulation, and effects on experimental pain. Finally, we give suggestions for future research that could more definitively determine the usefulness of deep brain stimulation for pain control.     

Hemangioendothelioma of the supraclavicular fossa associated with multifocal emboli. Apropos of a case

An adult with hemangioendothelioma of right supraclavicular fossa presented with a history of recurrent emboli of fingers and more particularly of occipital lobe. The mechanism of origin of these emboli from this pseudo-tumor is discussed and related to a possible development from a post-traumatic hematoma.     

Bereavement and remarriage for older adults

The purpose of this study was to assess differences in bereavement outcomes between surviving spouses aged 50 and over who remarried within 4-5 years and those who did not. Fifteen bereaved respondents out of 192 in a longitudinal prospective study who later remarried were compared with 15 other matched nonremarried respondents. Analyses of sociodemographic data, standardized measures of depression, life-satisfaction, resolution of grief, and self-perceived ratings of coping, stress, self-esteem, health and social support were performed with correlated t-tests. Statistically significant differences indicated that over time, the remarried subjects displayed more positive outcomes.
