Dystonia and reflex sympathetic dystrophy induced by ergotamine

A 59-year-old man developed dystonia and reflex sympathetic dystrophy after receiving high doses of ergotamine for migraine treatment. Ischemia is suggested as the precipitating factor.     

Detection of the center of the hip joint in computer-assisted surgery: an evaluation study of the Surgetics algorithm.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to assess the accuracy of an algorithm implemented by PRAXIM in the SURGETICS navigation station for detection of the hip center. This study will assess the robustness and accuracy of the algorithm in various clinical situations such as those involving non-sphericity of the femoral head, motion of the pelvis during hip center detection, and restricted range of motion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The localization of the hip center, based on kinematics, relies on the recording of n successive positions of the femoral rigid body in the localizer reference system during a passive circumduction motion of the hip joint. Therefore, the shape of the clouds of points acquired may vary from one acquisition to the next. To allow a comprehensive study of the consequences of these variations for hip center detection, we developed a simulator to generate numerous clouds of points. Results given subsequently for each test are the values of the difference between the femoral mechanical axis computed with C(c), the computed hip center, and the same axis computed with C(o), the reference hip center. RESULTS: Test 1: Sensitivity to noise. The errors ranged from 3.33 E - 12 (SD 3.29E - 12) for a noise of 0 mm to 8.18E - 1 (SD - 7.05E - 1) for a noise of 15 mm. Test 2: Sensitivity to the shape of the acquisition motion. All trajectories gave an error < 1 degrees . Test 3: Sensitivity to restricted range of motion. No value > 1 degrees was found during this test. Test 4: Sensitivity to the distance between two points of the cloud. No value > 0.5 degrees was found during this test. Test 5: Sensitivity to the number of points included in the cloud. No value > 1 degrees was found during this test. CONCLUSIONS: The Surgetics algorithm is robust to noise, can compensate for pelvic motion, and can be used even in the case of restricted range of motion.     

The course of a case of Maffucci's syndrome

The syndrome of Maffucci is characterized by angioma association of the enchondromatose. It is a relatively rare syndrome. The lesions are evolutived. The treatment is surgical. His pronostic is marqued by high percentage of malign degenerescence.     

Studies of the blood lipid peroxide status and vitamin E levels in patients with chronic active hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease

As free radicals and lipid peroxidation are involved in the pathogenesis of different inflammatory diseases of the liver, the blood malondialdehyde content, the activity or quantity of free radical eliminating enzymes and the natural antioxidant, vitamin E serum level has been studied in ten patients with chronic active hepatitis and in six subjects with alcoholic liver disease. Thirty healthy volunteers served as controls. The serum malondialdehyde/thiobarbituric acid reactive substance and its concentrations increased significantly in both hepatitis groups. The superoxide dismutase content was also raised in the patients' sera. The serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity was decreased in both groups, while the red blood cell GSH-Px showed a significantly lower activity in the alcoholic hepatitis patients. Serum catalase activity and vitamin E levels in both types of chronic hepatitis were not significantly different from the healthy controls.     

Warping of cross sections in the torsion of long bones with internal fracture fixation plates

Torsion of noncircular beams results in warping of each cross section. When noncircular cross sections are constrained to remain plane, the resulting shear stress distribution is different from what Saint Venant torsion (with warping) would predict. This has practical implications to the stress analysis of plated long bones subjected to torsional loadings. Analyses in which warping is not allowed predict incorrect stress fields in the plate and bone and overpredict the amount of stress shielding associated with fracture plate fixation.     

Panhypopituitarism as first manifestation of a lung cancer

Pituitary metastases of solid tumours are infrequent, specially as a first manifestation. When they happen, they are usually due to breast or lung cancer and are asymptomatic or produce diabetes insipidus. It is very strange that they produce hormonal deficiency. We present a case report of a bronchogenic adenocarcinoma in a 65-year-old man which began with panhypopituitarism, diabetes insipidus and visual alterations. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large sellar mass, with clivus infiltration and invading the right cavernous sinus. The biopsy result was adenocarcinoma metastases from lung cancer.
