Tear of the distal biceps branchii tendon: A new method of ultrasound evaluation

Tear of the distal biceps brachii tendon is an uncommon injury. Ultrasound evaluation of the distal tendon using an anterior approach is often difficult because of technical factors. We describe a new method of ultrasound evaluation of the distal biceps tendon insertion. This involves a posterior approach with the forearm pronated. With pronation of the forearm, the radial tuberosity faces posteriorly, bringing the distal biceps tendon insertion into view. A surgically proven case of distal biceps tendon tear is presented to illustrate our technique.

Information diffusion,Facebook clusters,and the simplicial model of social aggregation: a computational simulation of simplicial diffusers for community health interventions

By integrating the simplicial model of social aggregation with existing research on opinion leadership and diffusion networks, this article introduces the constructs of simplicial diffusers (mathematically defined as nodes embedded in simplexes; a simplex is a socially bonded cluster) and simplicial diffusing sets (mathematically defined as minimal covers of a simplicial complex; a simplicial complex is a social aggregation in which socially bonded clusters are embedded) to propose a strategic approach for information diffusion of cancer screenings as a health intervention on Facebook for community cancer prevention and control. This approach is novel in its incorporation of interpersonally bonded clusters, culturally distinct subgroups, and different united social entities that coexist within a larger community into a computational simulation to select sets of simplicial diffusers with the highest degree of information diffusion for health intervention dissemination. The unique contributions of the article also include seven propositions and five algorithmic steps for computationally modeling the simplicial model with Facebook data.     

Factors influencing ultra-endurance athletes food choices: an adapted food choice questionnaire

ABSTRACT

Inadequate nutritional intake has been reported during ultra-endurance training and competition. While substandard nutritional knowledge may contribute to inappropriate nutritional choices, the relationship between these variables is often weak. As such, this study investigated the importance of a range of factors to the food choices of ultra-endurance athletes. An existing food choices questionnaire was extended to reflect the main factors proposed to influence the food choices of these athletes. The questionnaire was pilot tested with endurance athletes, during which, it was refined and reassessed for internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Subsequently, 101 experienced ultra-endurance athletes completed the amended questionnaire. Athletes also documented dietary restrictions or strategies employed in preparation for competition. The factors rated as important by the majority of the athletes were “provides me with energy”, “do not cause me gastrointestinal discomfort” and, “are nutritious”. Despite the high importance of the provision of energy, only 38.2% of participants reported following a high carbohydrate diet in preparation for competition. In addition, given that nutritious foods are typically high in fibre, it is likely that this factor may conflict with the avoidance of gastrointestinal discomfort. The potential incompatibility of these factors may help explain the observed suboptimal nutritional intake.     

Hypertension in dichorionic twin gestations: how is birthweight affected?*

Objective: To examine the association between hypertension (HTN) and discordant or small for gestational age (SGA) birthweights among dichorionic twin pregnancies.

Methods: Retrospective cohort of dichorionic twin pregnancies delivered at ≥24 0/7 weeks from 2002 to 2015. Women with HTN in pregnancy (gestational HTN or preeclampsia) and chronic HTN (cHTN) were compared to those with uncomplicated dichorionic pregnancies. Outcomes were any discordance (≥20% difference within each twin pair), discordance with at least one twin also SGA (≥20% discordance with at least one twin also SGA?<10th percentile), and SGA alone of one or both twins (<5th and?<10th percentile).

Results: 474 Dichorionic pregnancies were identified. Women with HTN in pregnancy had an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of 2.68 (95% CI 1.48-4.87) for any discordance and 2.94 (1.57-5.48) for discordance with at least one twin also SGA. These aORs for women with cHTN were 4.65 (1.39-15.52) and 4.37 (1.21-15.76), respectively. Significant differences were not observed for SGA alone of one or both twins.

Conclusion: Among dichorionic pregnancies, both women with HTN in pregnancy and cHTN demonstrated increased odds of any discordant growth, as well as discordance with concurrent SGA of at least one twin. Odds of these outcomes were greatest with cHTN.     

金石穿胶囊对致石豚鼠胆汁主要成分的影响

目的 :研究金石穿对致石豚鼠胆汁中几种主要化学成分的影响 ,以确定其防治胆石症的疗效。方法 :随机将 6 0只实验豚鼠分为正常组、模型对照组、胆石通组、金石穿组 ,用致石饲料诱发豚鼠胆囊结石模型 ,喂养一段时间后处死豚鼠 ,取胆汁 ,测定其胆汁中胆红素 (Bi L)、胆固醇 (Cho)、钙离子 (Ca2 )的含量。结果 :金石穿组胆汁中Cho、Bi L、Ca2 浓度均降低。结论 :金石穿能有效降低致石豚鼠成石率 ,具有明显的防治胆石症的作用
