Samut Sakhon is a Thai province popular among immigrants attracted to work in factories and the Thai food industry, especially people from Myanmar. Poor personal-hygiene behaviors, crowded accommodation and limited sanitation, result in health problems among immigrant workers. Various infectious diseases among this group are seen and managed by Samut Sakhon General Hospital. The impact of intestinal parasitic infections on public health is well known; they can spread from infected immigrant areas to uninfected areas via close contact and fecal-oral transmission from contaminated food and water. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among 372 immigrant children at 8 child-daycare centers during their parents’ work time, by physical examination, fecal examination, and examination of the environment around the centers. Physical examinations were generally unremarkable, except that head-lice and fingernail examinations were positive in two cases (0.8 %). The results showed intestinal parasitic infections to be highly prevalent, at 71.0 %. These infections comprised both helminths and protozoa: Trichuris trichiura (50.8 %), Enterobius vermicularis (25.2 %), Ascaris lumbricoides (15.3 %), hookworm (11.6 %), Giardia lamblia (10.2 %), Endolimax nana (3.5 %), Entamoeba coli (2.7 %), and Blastocystis hominis (0.5 %). The environmental survey found a small number of houseflies near the accommodation to be positive for helminthic eggs (0.2 %), including A. lumbricoides, E. vermicularis, hookworms, Taenia spp., and minute intestinal flukes. Regarding the high prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among children, it has been conjectured whether they were infected, along with their parents, during their daily lives before or after settling in Thailand. Intestinal parasites among immigrant children may involve a significant epidemiological impact, since immigrant children can serve as carriers and transmitters of disease. 相似文献

1. The present study was performed in order to determine the amino acid and fatty acid composition of an aqueous extract of the freshwater fish Channa striatus, obtained by soaking (1:2, w/v) fresh fillets overnight in a chloroform:methanol (2:1, v/v) solvent, to elucidate the mechanism responsible for its antinociceptive activity and to clarify the relationship between the presence of the amino and fatty acids and the expected activity. 2. The aqueous extract was found to contain all amino acids with the major amino acids glycine, alanine, lysine, aspartic acid and proline making up 35.77 +/- 0.58, 10.19 +/- 1.27, 9.44 +/- 0.56, 8.53 +/- 1.15 and 6.86 +/- 0.78% of the total protein, respectively. 3. In addition, the aqueous extract was found to have a high palmitic acid (C16:0) content, which contributed approximately 35.93 +/- 0.63% to total fatty acids. The other major fatty acids in the aqueous extract were oleic acid (C18:1), stearic acid (C18:0), linoleic acid (C18:2) and arachidonic acid (C20:4), contributing 22.96 +/- 0.40, 15.31 +/- 0.33, 11.45 +/- 0.31 and 7.44 +/- 0.83% of total fatty acids, respectively. 4. Furthermore, the aqueous extract was demonstrated to possess concentration-dependent antinociceptive activity, as expected, when assessed using the abdominal constriction test in mice. 5. It is concluded that the aqueous extract of C. striatus contains all the important amino acids, but only some of the important fatty acids, which are suggested to play a key role in the observed antinociceptive activity of the extract, as well as in the traditionally claimed wound healing properties of the extract. 相似文献

Moringa oleifera L. (Moringaceae) is known to possess high nutritional value and is used in a folklore medicine to treat various ailments related to pain and inflammation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of the aqueous extract of the leaves of M. oleifera in laboratory animals, using the writhing, hot-plate and formalin tests as the antinociceptive assays, and carrageenan-induced paw edema test as the anti-inflammatory assay. The extract (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg) exhibited significant (P < 0.05) antinociceptive activity, which occurred in a dose-dependent manner, in all tests used. The extract also exhibited significant (P < 0.05) anti-inflammatory activity in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, the extract antinociceptive activity was suggested to be modulated via opioid receptors at the central, but not peripheral, antinociceptive level, based on the ability of 5 mg/kg naloxone to reverse the extract activity in the hot-plate, but not the writhing test. In conclusion, M. oleifera leaves possess peripherally non-opioid mediated and centrally opioid mediated antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities. This study also confirms the traditional uses of M. oleifera in the treatment of ailments, particularly those related to pain and inflammation. 相似文献

Voriconazole is a new, potent broad-spectrum triazole systemic antifungal drug, a second-generation azole antifungal that is increasing in popularity, especially for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis and fluconazole-resistant invasive Candida infections. However, it is also known to induce hepatotoxicity clinically. The aim of this study was to investigate the hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity potential of voriconazole in vivo in rats. Forty rats were treated intraperitoneally with voriconazole as single (0, 10, l00, and 200 mg/kg) or repeated (0, 10, 50, and l00?mg/kg per day for 14 days) doses. Venous blood was collected for the repeated-dose group on days 1 and 14. Rats were sacrificed 24 hours after the last dose. Body weight, liver weight, and kidney weight of rats were recorded. Livers and kidneys samples were taken for histological and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Results revealed that voriconazole had no effects on serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphotase, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine for both the single- and repeated-dose groups. However, histologically, in the repeated 50- and 100-mg/kg voriconazole-treated rats, mild focal inflammation was observed. Under TEM, only small changes in the 100 mg/kg/day group were revealed. These results collectively demonstrated that voriconazole did not induce significant hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, even at very high doses. 相似文献

Objectives: Pleiotropic effects of recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) have recently been discovered in many non‐renal animal models. The renoprotective effects of EPO and carbamylated‐erythropoietin (CEPO), a novel EPO which has a small stimulatory effect on hemoglobin, have never been explored in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), a chronic tubulointerstitial (TI) disease model which is independent of systemic factors. Methods: In order to examine the effects of EPO and CEPO treatments on renal TI injury, 36 male Sprague‐Dawley rats, weighing 250–320 g, underwent: UUO without treatment (group 1, n = 12), UUO with EPO (groups 2, n = 12), and UUO with CEPO (group 3, n = 12). EPO and CEPO were injected subcutaneously at a dose of 5000 u/kg to each respective rat at 1 day pre‐UUO and at day 3, 7 and 10 post‐UUO. After days 3, 7, and 14 of UUO, TI injury, collagen, α‐smooth muscle actin (α‐SMA) positive cell, ED1‐positive cell, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) mediated nick‐end labeling (TUNEL)‐positive cell, and transforming growth factor‐β1 (TGF‐β1) messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) were determined. Bcl‐2 expression was also assessed to verify the mechanism of apoptosis. Results: At day 14 UUO caused severe TI injury with a significant increase in collagen, α‐SMA, ED1‐positive cell, TUNEL‐positive cell, and TGF‐β1 mRNA expression. Administration of EPO and CEPO significantly attenuated TI injury, collagen, ED1‐positive cells, and TUNEL‐positive cells. Only CEPO‐treated rats had decreased α‐SMA positive cells and TGF‐β1 mRNA. The expression of Bcl‐2 was demonstrated only in EPO‐treated rats. The hematocrit levels in EPO‐treated rats were higher than the control and CEPO‐treated rats. Conclusions: EPO and CEPO can limit 14‐day UUO‐induced TI injury by reducing inflammation, interstitial fibrosis, and tubular apoptosis. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Because patterns of infection acquired in patients undergoing operation are ever changing, it is an essential part of nosocomial infection surveillance programs to periodically document the epidemiologic features of infection in these patients. This study was conducted with the primary intention of describing the incidence and risk factors of the surgical site infection (SSI). METHODS: We performed a prospective study in patients undergoing certain major operations at a 750-bed university hospital in Thailand. The National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance (NNIS) system method and criteria were used for identifying and diagnosing infection. The infection rates were benchmarked with the NNIS report by means of indirect standardization and reported in terms of standardized infection ratio. Risk factors for SSI were evaluated using the multiple logistic regression model. RESULTS: From September 1998 to March 2000, the study included 4193 patients with 4437 major operations. The study identified 192 SSIs, 76 urinary catheter-related urinary tract infections, 26 central line-related bloodstream infections, and 39 instances of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), yielding an infection rate of 4.3 SSIs/100 operations, 11.0 catheter-related urinary tract infections/1000 urinary catheter-days, 6.1 central line-related bloodstream infections/1000 central line-days, and 11.0 VAPs/1000 ventilator-days. When compared with data from NNIS, the standardized infection ratio of SSI, catheter-related urinary tract infection, central line-related bloodstream infection, and VAP were 2.3, 2.1, 1.1, and 0.8, respectively. The factors that significantly associated with SSI were duration of operation in minutes, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class, and degree of wound contamination. CONCLUSION: All of the infection rates identified, except VAP, were higher than the average NNIS rates. The risk factors for SSI were prolonged duration of operation, poor physical status according to ASA classification, and higher degree of wound contamination. 相似文献

We assessed the prophylactic efficacy of azithromycin (250 mg/day) against malaria in 276 adults in western Thailand in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. After antimalarial suppressive treatment, volunteers were randomized in a 2:1 ratio to either the azithromycin or placebo, respectively. Study medication was given for an average of 74 days. The azithromycin group (n = 179) had five endpoint parasitemias (1 Plasmodium vivax and 4 P. falciparum), and the placebo group (n = 97) had 28 endpoint parasitemias (21 P. vivax, 5 P. falciparum, and 2 mixed infections). Adverse events and compliance and withdrawal rates were similar in both groups. The protective efficacy (PE) of azithromycin was 98% for P. vivax (95% confidence interval [CI] = 88-100%). There were too few cases to reliably estimate the efficacy of azithromycin for P. falciparum (PE =71%, 95% C =-14-94%). We conclude that daily azithromycin was safe, well-tolerated, and had a high efficacy for the prevention of P. vivax malaria. 相似文献
