Oral intra vascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia in the floor of the mouth.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is an unusual vascular lesion of proliferating endothelial cells. It is more frequently seen in the extremities, particularly in the fingers. Oral IPEH has been reported with the common sites being lip, tongue, and buccal mucosa. In this article, we present a case of oral IPEH of the floor of the mouth, an unusual location, presenting in a 9-month-old male. The histogenesis, histologic features, and ultrastructural features are also reviewed. A misdiagnosis of angiosarcoma can be made in a case of IPEH due to similar histopathologic features. It is imperative to rule out this error by an elaborate histopathologic evaluation ofthese lesions.

CYP1A1 gene polymorphisms: lack of association with breast cancer susceptibility in the southern region (Madurai) of India

The cytochrome P 450 1A1 gene encoding a phase I metabolic enzyme appears to be a candidate for breast cancer risk. It is involved in the phase I detoxification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 2-hydroxylation of estrogens and mammary carcinogens into 2-hydroxy catechol metabolites. Several studies have investigated polymorphisms in CYP1A1 and breast cancer risk with inconsistent results. We here carried out a population based case-control study of the CYP MspI (CYP1A1*1/M1) and Ile462Val (CYP1A1*2/M2) polymorphisms in CYP1A1 to clarify their importance in determining breast cancer susceptibility in a South Indian population. A total of 50 cases and 50 controls were genotyped for both polymorphisms. We also investigated putative interactions with exposure to pollution, radiation and intake of tobacco and CYP1A1 genotype and breast cancer risk using a case only study design. The genotype distribution of CYP1A1*1 in cancer patients was 6% for homozygous (CYP1A1 M1 [C/C], 34% for heterozygous CYP1A1 M1 [T/C] and 60% for wild type (CYP1A1 M1 [T/T] (OR: 0.583, CI-95% (0.252-1.348). The genotype distribution of M2 genotypes in patients was 24% of homozygous (CYP1A1 M2 [Val/Val], 4% for heterozygous (CYP1A1 M2 [Ile/Val] and 72% for wild type allele (CYP1A1 M2 [Ile/Ile] [OR: 0.720, CI-95% (0.606-0.856)]. Our results suggest that there is no significant correlation between CYP1A1 M1/ CYP1A1 M2 polymorphism and occurrence of breast cancer in South Indian women.     

Odontogenic myxoma of maxilla.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a rare and locally invasive benign neoplasm found exclusively in the jaws. OM commonly occurs in the second and third decade, and the mandible is involved more commonly than the maxilla. The lesion often grows without symptoms and presents as a painless swelling. The radiographic features are variable, and the diagnosis is therefore not easy. A case of OM of the maxilla with unusual radiographic and histologic features is described in a 30-year-old male. A panoramic radiograph revealed a well-demarcated, multilocular radiolucent lesion with 'tennis racket' appearance involving maxillary antrum. The histopathology showed loosely arranged spindle-shaped stellate cells and few areas of inactive odontogenic epithelium in a mucoid intercellular substance.

Corneal perforation due to limbal involvement in Sézary syndrome

Background  

The majority of lymphomas involving the eye and ocular adnexa are B-cell lymphomas. Ocular involvement by T-cell lymphoma is rare. We report a case of corneal perforation due to direct involvement of the corneal limbus by lymphoma in a patient with Sézary syndrome.     

Aeromonas spp. and their association with human diarrheal disease.

Between January 1988 and December 1989 Aeromonas species were isolated from 45 (1.8%) of 2,480 patients with acute gastroenteritis. No other bacterial enteric pathogens were found in any of these 45 patients. Of the 45 Aeromonas isolates, 35 strains (77.8%) were Aeromonas hydrophila, 7 (15.5%) were Aeromonas sobria, and 3 (6.7%) were Aeromonas caviae. Most of the patients were under 5 years of age. No bacterial enteric pathogens, including Aeromonas species, were isolated from 512 age- and sex-matched control subjects. Examination of the Aeromonas isolates for exotoxin production (enterotoxin and hemolysin) indicated that all strains, irrespective of species, were enterotoxin positive (rabbit ileal loop model) and hemolysin positive (rabbit erythrocyte model). These results suggest that Aeromonas species are potential enteric pathogens in our geographical region.
