Background and aimsThe Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention: An Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin (JUPITER) reported reduced cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in patients with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) and low LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels treated with statins. The aims of this study were to determine the proportion of “JUPITER-eligible” Korean adults and to describe their characteristics.Methods and resultsAs many as 15,154 subjects with serum LDL-C levels <130 mg/dL were selected among 28,851 middle-aged participants (men ≥ 50 years, women ≥ 60 years) who participated in a routine health check-up program. Among the participants with LDL-C less than 130 mg/dL, only 15% had CRP levels ≥2.0 mg/L (7.9% of original participants). Subjects were divided into four groups according to CRP levels (<0.5, ≥0.5 ? <1.0, ≥1.0 ? <2.0, and ≥2.0 mg/L). Mean HDL-C and apolipoprotein A1 levels decreased significantly as the mean CRP values increased. The insulin and homeostasis model of insulin resistance was significantly different according to CRP quartile. The number of subjects with metabolic syndrome and its components increased significantly as the mean CRP values increased.ConclusionIn this Asian population, few individuals with low LDL-C levels had CRP levels ≥2.0 mg/L. Elevated CRP levels were associated with components of atherogenic dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. Additional clinical trials should be designed and performed in different ethnic groups, as different CRP cut-off levels may be required in different ethnic groups.  相似文献

The possible beneficial effects of chronic low-dose irradiation (LDR) and its mechanism of action in a variety of pathophysiological processes such as cancer are a subject of intense investigation. While animal studies involving long-term exposure to LDR have yielded encouraging results, the influence of LDR at the cellular level has been less well defined. We reasoned that since natural killer (NK) cells constitute an early responder to exogenous stress, NK cells may reveal sentinel alterations in function upon exposure to LDR. When purified NK cells received LDR at 4.2 mGy/h for a total of 0.2 Gy in vitro, no significant difference in cell viability was observed. Likewise, no functional changes were detected in LDR-exposed NK cells, demonstrating that LDR alone was insufficient to generate changes at the cellular level. Nonetheless, significant augmentation of cytotoxic, but not proliferative, function was detected when NK cells were stimulated with low-dose IL-2 prior to irradiation. This enhancement of NK cytotoxicity was not due to alterations in NK-activating receptors, NK1.1, NKG2D, CD69 and 2B4, or changes in the rate of early or late apoptosis. Therefore, LDR, in the presence of suboptimal cytokine levels, can facilitate anti-tumor cytotoxicity of NK cells without influencing cellular proliferation or apoptosis. Whether these results translate to in vivo consequences remains to be seen; however, our data provide initial evidence that exposure to LDR can lead to subtle immune-enhancing effects on NK cells and may explain, in part, the functional basis underlying, diverse beneficial effects seen in the animals chronically exposed to LDR.  相似文献

Under Korean field conditions, coinfection with porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is most commonly observed in porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). Despite the wide use of PCV2 vaccination, PRDC remains a serious respiratory problem. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine and compare the efficacy of 4 one-dose PCV2 vaccines on 3-week-old pigs with an experimental PCV2-PRRSV challenge at 17 weeks postvaccination. Regardless of which commercial PCV2 vaccine was used, the vaccination of piglets at 3 weeks of age was efficacious against cochallenge of PCV2 and PRRSV, on the basis of growth performance and PCV2-associated lesions. However, the inactivated chimeric PCV1-2 and the PCV2 vaccines induced higher PCV2-specific neutralizing antibody (NA) titers and PCV2-specific gamma interferon-secreting cells and lower PCV2 viremia levels than the two PCV2 subunit vaccines. The vaccination of piglets against PCV2 at 3 weeks of age was effective in reducing PCV2 viremia and PCV2-associated lesions during the finishing period, which is an age at which pigs are frequently affected by PRDC caused by coinfection with PCV2 and PRRSV under Korean field conditions.  相似文献

Antiretroviral (ARV) drug therapy, given during pregnancy for prevention of mother‐to‐child transmission of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV‐1), induces fetal mitochondrial dysfunction in some children. However, the persistence/reversibility of that dysfunction is unclear. Here we have followed Erythrocebus patas (patas) monkey offspring for up to 3 years of age (similar in development to a 15‐year old human) after exposure of the dams to human‐equivalent in utero ARV exposure protocols. Pregnant patas dams (3–5/exposure group) were given ARV drug combinations that included zidovudine (AZT)/lamivudine (3TC)/abacavir (ABC), or AZT/3TC/nevirapine (NVP), for the last 10 weeks (50%) of gestation. Infants kept for 1 and 3 years also received drug for the first 6 weeks of life. In offpsring at birth, 1 and 3 years of age mitochondrial morphology, examined by electron microscopy (EM), was compromised compared to the unexposed controls. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), measured by hybrid capture chemiluminescence assay (HCCA) was depleted in hearts of patas exposed to AZT/3TC/NVP at all ages (< 0.05), but not in those exposed to AZT/3TC/ABC at any age. Compared to unexposed controls, mitochondrial reserve capacity oxygen consumption rate (OCR by Seahorse) in cultured bone marrow mesenchymal fibroblasts from 3‐year‐old patas offspring was ~50% reduced in AZT/3TC/ABC‐exposed patas (< 0.01), but not in AZT/3TC/NVP‐exposed patas. Overall the data show that 3‐year‐old patas sustain persistent mitochondrial dysfunction as a result of perinatal ARV drug exposure. Environ. Mol. Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilocebaceous unit that presents with various spectrum and severity. Genetic backgrounds and environmental factors are also considered to be relevant, but few studies have focused on Korean patients. A cross‐sectional epidemiologic study on family history of Korean acne patients was performed to analyze family history of acne, and to compare the severity and characteristics of acne in association with family history. A total of 221 patients were enrolled, 98 male (44.3%) and 123 female (55.7%). Patients were grouped as patients with (A+) or without (A‐) family history of acne. In a second analysis, patients with any experience of acne treatment were evaluated. Severity of acne was measured with Burton's grading system and Korean Acne Grading System (KAGS). Female patients had a higher tendency to have family history than males (= 0.002). Group A+ had statistically significant earlier onset of acne (= 0.002). In inexperienced patients, patients with family history showed a relatively earlier onset (= 0.084). This study confirmed the role of heredity in acne. Family history of acne is associated with earlier onset of the disease, and more non‐inflammatory lesions.  相似文献
