This study compared the effectiveness of two reading treatment programmes for two contrasting developmental dyslexics. W.B. demonstrated "pure" phonological dyslexia (deficient nonword reading but normal irregular-word reading) and N.S. "pure" surface dyslexia (the converse pattern). Both participants completed: (a) a phonological programme, which targeted the sublexical reading procedure through repeated exposure to word "families" with the same grapheme-phoneme correspondence (GPC; e.g., frail, raid, bait); and (b) a whole-word programme, which targeted the lexical reading procedure through tasks that emphasize whole-word visual analysis (e.g., speeded identification of visually degraded words). Both participants improved after training on the targeted words and/or GPCs. However, W.B. demonstrated reliable generalization only following the phonological programme and only in his reading of nonwords. In contrast, N.S. showed generalization across all types of word materials following both programmes. Although the whole-word programme (in particular the degraded-images technique) resulted in numerically greater improvement for N.S., this difference was not significant. Insulin and a 36-residue peptide with homology to pancreatic polypeptide (PP) were isolated from the endocrine pancreas of the alligator gar (Lepisosteus spatula), a ganoid fish, by gel filtration and HPLC. Heterologous radioimmunoassays were used to detect insulin-like and PP-like immunoreactivities during purification of the two peptides. The sequence of the 36-amino acid peptide containing a C-terminal tyrosinamide was identical at 31 of 36 positions to porcine neuropeptide Y (NPY). The amino acid sequence of this peptide is YPPKPENPGEDAPPEELAKYYSALRHYINLITRQRY-NH2. The second peptide, gar insulin, contains 52 amino acid residues and is composed of a 21-residue A chain and a 31-residue B chain. The sequence of the A chain is GIVEQCCHKPCTIYELENYCN. The purpose of this article has been to discuss and present some of the current biomedical technology available for patient transport. Recommendations were offered concerning the evaluation of these products, so that they can be effectively used in the air medical environment. There is one step yet that needs to be taken. This step involves identifying the most appropriate application of this technology to the care of the patient. As asked at the beginning of this article, how many pumps and monitors are needed for safe and high-quality patient transport? The answer to that question is not within the scope of this article, but pieces to the answer are. Propionibacterium sp. is commonly isolated in association with orthopedic implants, either as a pathogen or a colonizer. Microbial characteristics that indicate whether the isolated species is a likely cause of orthopedic implant infection versus a colonizing agent would be clinically useful. We performed a prospective trial to determine the species of Propionibacterium and the phylotype (IA, IB, II, III) of Propionibacterium acnes isolated from the surface of removed orthopedic implants, and we correlated these findings with the presence or absence of infection. P. acnes represented 61 of 62 isolates. P. acnes type I was more commonly isolated than was type II (62% versus 38%, respectively), whether associated with infection or not. P. acnes type III was not detected. There was no clear association between types I and II P. acnes and infection or colonization of failed orthopedic implants (P = 0.75), however type IB strains were more frequently isolated than type IA from infected prosthese. 相似文献
