Proctology in general office practice

Salient features of diagnosis and treatment of anorectal diseases are briefly presented to serve as a guide to those who do not specialize in proctology. Established principles and procedures are re-emphasized and new and important facts, such as chemotherapy for anorectal manifestations of venereal lymphogranuloma and uncomplicated anal gonorrhea, and tattooing of the anal and perianal areas with mercury sulfide for intractable pernicious pruritus ani, are discussed.     

Cardiac hypertrophy of unknown etiology in young adults: A clinical and pathological study of three cases

Three cases have been described presenting an unfamiliar clinical picture. The main features were great cardiac enlargement, intraventricular thrombosis with embolisms to the viscera, and death within a year after the symptoms were well established. There were no signs of valvular disease or arteriosclerosis, and the blood pressure was at the normal level or slightly below it. Microscopic examination of the myocardium showed hypertrophy of muscle fibers in all, infarcts in varying stages of degeneration and repair in two, and in one of these, a curious hydropic degeneration of the heart muscle cells with vacuolization of the sarcoplasm. The third case showed only a few hemorrhages between the muscle bundles. No inflammatory changes or signs of arteriolar disease were observed.Though clinically the patients presented many essential features in common, the lesions at autopsy were not identical. It was not possible to state whether these cases represented a single condition at different phases of its development or were entirely unrelated in their pathogenesis. The etiology remained obscure.     

Über die Einwirkung von Hypophysin und seinen Fraktionen auf den Wasser-Salzstoffwechsel

Zusammenfassung Das Tonephin hat zum mindesten die gleiche wasserantidiuretische und molkonzentrierende Wirkung wie das Hypophysin. Es bewirkt wie jenes keine Steigerung der absoluten Salzausscheidung. Die Veränderungen des Serumionengehaltes sind unter beiden Präparaten fast gleich stark, es kommt im Vergleich zum einfachen Wasserversuch zu einer erheblichen Reduktion der Gesamtelektrolyte, die ihr Maximum etwa 11/2 Stunden nach der Injektion erreicht, um von da ab (immer entsprechend der Wasserdiurese und der Abnahme der Blutverdünnung) allmählich zur Norm zurückzukehren.Das Orasthin besitzt auf den Wasser-Salzstoffwechsel den gleichen Effekt wie das Hypophysin. Es unterscheidet sich von diesem lediglich durch seinen geringeren Wirkungsgrad. Dies geht sowohl aus den Harn-, wie aus den Serumveränderungen hervor.
