This article critically reviews 62 empirical studies that examine the prevalence of female-perpetrated intimate partner violence across three distinct populations (adolescents, college students, and adults). All studies were published between 1996 and 2006 and reported prevalence rates of physical, emotional, and/or sexual violence perpetrated by females in heterosexual intimate relationships. The highest rates were found for emotional violence, followed by physical and sexual violence. Prevalence rates varied widely within each population, most likely because of methodological and sampling differences across studies. Few longitudinal studies existed, limiting the extent to which we could identify developmental patterns associated with female-perpetrated intimate partner violence. Differences and similarities across populations are highlighted. Methodological difficulties of this area of inquiry as well as implications for practice, policy, and research are discussed.  相似文献

Toxoplasma gondii is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for toxoplasmosis. T. gondii is a purine auxotroph incapable of de novo purine biosynthesis and depends on salvage pathways for its purine requirements. Adenosine kinase (EC.2.7.1.20) is the major enzyme in the salvage of purines in these parasites. 6-Benzylthioinosine and analogues were established as "subversive substrates" for the T. gondii, but not for the human adenosine kinase. Therefore, these compounds act as selective anti-toxoplasma agents. In the present study, a series of N(6)-benzyladenosine analogues were synthesized from 6-chloropurine riboside with substituted benzylamines via solution phase parallel synthesis. These N(6)-benzyladenosine analogues were evaluated for their binding affinity to purified T. gondii adenosine kinase. Furthermore, the anti-toxoplasma efficacy and host toxicity of these compounds were tested in cell culture. Certain substituents on the aromatic ring improved binding affinity to T. gondii adenosine kinase when compared to the unsubstituted N(6)-benzyladenosine. Similarly, varying the type and position of the substituents on the aromatic ring led to different degrees of potency and selectivity as anti-toxoplasma agents. Among the synthesized analogues, N(6)-(2,4-dimethoxybenzyl)adenosine exhibited the most favorable anti-toxoplasma activity without host toxicity. The binding mode of the synthesized N(6)-benzyladenosine analogues were characterized to illustrate the role of additional hydrophobic effect and van der Waals interaction within an active site of T. gondii adenosine kinase by induced fit molecular modeling.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the dentin/adhesive interfacial characteristics when bonding to noncarious as well as caries-affected dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven extracted, unerupted, third molars were sectioned into halves. Artificial caries was created on one-half of each tooth, leaving the other half as a control. Dentin surfaces were treated with UNO adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions for the wet-bonding technique and under environmental conditions present in the oral cavity. Dentin/adhesive interface sections of each half-tooth were stained with Goldner's trichrome, a classic bone stain, and examined using light microscopy. The width of exposed collagen was measured directly from photomicrographs, and adhesive penetration was analyzed qualitatively. RESULTS: The degree and extent to which the adhesive encapsulated the demineralized dentin matrix were reflected in the color difference in the stained sections with the noncarious dentin sections showing a degree of collagen encapsulation superior to that of the caries-affected dentin sections. The overall mean widths of exposed collagen were significantly (p < or = .05) greater at the caries-affected dentin/adhesive interface, 8.6 (1.7) microm, as compared with those at the noncarious dentin/adhesive interface, 6.0 (1.5) microm. CONCLUSIONS: The morphologic characteristics of the caries-affected dentin/interface suggest an increase in the exposed collagen zone and a decrease in the quality of the adhesive infiltration when compared with noncarious dentin. The evidence suggests that dentin substrate characteristics have a significant effect on the dentin/adhesive interface structure.  相似文献

Objectives:To identify practice patterns among radiation oncologists in Saudi Arabia.Methods:A questionnaire comprising 27 scientific questions and 6 demographic questions was created in 2019 by a faculty member at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and distributed among radiation oncologists in Saudi Arabia between February and April 2019.Results:Twenty-four responses were received. Regarding chest wall treatment after mastectomy, 100% of the respondents offered postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) for tumor stage 3 node 1 (T3N1) or T4 disease, while 87.5% offered PMRT for T2N1, and 83.3% offered PMRT for T3N0 disease. In contrast, there was a lack of consensus regarding treatment planning and coverage criteria for internal mammary lymph nodes and contouring.Conclusion:Variations in breast radiotherapy practices in Saudi Arabia exist due to the lack of clinical evidence and national guidelines, as well as potential variations in health resources allocation. Resource allocations and the establishment of national guidelines are recommended to decrease this variation and allow for data exchange and the development of national research collaborations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and posterior crossbite and/or deep bite and any possible association between them.

Methods: One thousand-nineteen adolescents responded to a questionnaire regarding oral habits and TMD symptoms. Afterwards, they were diagnosed according to the Axis I of the DC/TMD and underwent a dental examination. The chi-square test was used for statistical analysis.

Results: A significant association was found between posterior crossbite and some TMD diagnosis, but no association was found between deep bite and TMD, nor between occlusal diagnosis and bruxism. TMDs were more prevalent in girls. There was a significant sex difference (more among females) in the prevalence of painful TMDs.

Conclusion: Posterior crossbite in the adolescent population analyzed may be related to TMDs, in contrary to deep-bite. The presence of posterior crossbite may have different impact on TMD findings between the sexes.  相似文献

rATG is used for HTx induction but is costly and associated with infection and PTLD. Hypothesis: Tailoring rATG induction with CD3 monitoring results in less infection, reduced costs, and similar rejection. Retrospective review of HTx recipients receiving rATG induction. Control cases received “usual” rATG dosing (1.5 mg/kg/day typically × 5 days). Starting in October 2009, absolute CD3 monitoring (target <25 cells/mm3) guided rATG dosing (study cases). Outcomes included first‐year incidence of infection/rejection, direct costs of therapy, and incidence of PTLD/death. Study cases (n = 32) received fewer doses of rATG (median 4 vs. 5, p < 0.001) and less total rATG (median 3.2 vs. 7.4 mg/kg, p < 0.001) compared with controls (n = 17). There was no difference in incidence of infection, rejection, or patient survival during the first year post‐HTx. There was one early death in both groups and one late case of PTLD in the control group. Drug savings were significant (median drug cost per patient $2718 vs. $4756, p < 0.001). CD3‐tailored rATG induction in HTx recipients is associated with reduced drug costs and similar rates of rejection/infection. Longer follow‐up will determine whether extended benefits are associated with this induction monitoring strategy.  相似文献

Hyperlipidemia is a common clinically encountered health condition worldwide that promotes the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis. Berberine (BBR) is a natural product with acknowledged anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and metabolic effects. This study evaluated the effect of BBR on lipid alterations, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response in rats with acute hyperlipidemia induced by poloxamer-407 (P-407). Rats were pretreated with BBR (25 and 50 mg/kg) for 14 days and acute hyperlipidemia was induced by a single dose of P-407 (500 mg/kg). BBR ameliorated hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and plasma lipoproteins in P-407-adminsitered rats. Plasma lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity was decreased, and hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase activity was enhanced in hyperlipidemic rats. The expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) and ATP-binding cassette transporter 1 (ABCA1) was downregulated in hyperlipidemic rats. BBR enhanced LPL activity, upregulated LDL-R, and ABCA1, and suppressed HMG-CoA reductase in P-407-administered rats. Pretreatment with BBR ameliorated lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide (NO), pro-inflammatory mediators (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, interferon-γ, IL-4 and IL-18) and enhanced antioxidants. In addition, BBR suppressed lymphocyte ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase (E-NTPDase) and ecto-adenosine deaminase (E-ADA) as well as NO and TNF-α release by macrophages isolated from normal and hyperlipidemic rats. In silico investigations revealed the binding affinity of BBR toward LPL, HMG-CoA reductase, LDL-R, PSK9, ABCA1, and E-NTPDase. In conclusion, BBR effectively prevented acute hyperlipidemia and its associated inflammatory responses by modulating LPL, cholesterolgenesis, cytokine release, and lymphocyte E-NTPDase and E-ADA. Therefore, BBR is an effective and safe natural compound that might be employed as an adjuvant against hyperlipidemia and its associated inflammation.  相似文献

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common primary malignancy worldwide, and the third most common cause of death among cancers worldwide. HCC occurs in several pre-existing conditions, including hepatitis C, hepatitis B virus, and non-alcoholic cirrhosis. Egypt used to be the country with the heaviest hepatitis C virus (HCV) burden. The relationship between HCV and HCC is an important research area. In Egypt, HCC is a significant public health problem. A possible cause for the increasing rates of detection of HCC in Egypt is the mass screening program that was carried by the government for detecting and treating HCV. A multidisciplinary approach is now widely applied to HCC management in health centers all over Egypt. Different treatment modalities are available in Egypt, with success rates comparable to global rates. The Egyptian health authorities have made the elimination of HCV from Egypt a special priority, and this approach should lead to a decrease in number of HCC cases in the near future. In this article we review the current situation of HCC in Egypt, including epidemiological aspects, relevant risk factors for HCC development, strategies, and efforts established by health authorities for the screening and prevention of both HCV and HCC in Egypt. This article reviews 35 U.S. studies on the intersection of HIV and adult intimate partner violence (IPV). Most studies describe rates of IPV among women at risk or living with HIV/AIDS and identify correlates, using multiple types of convenience samples (e.g., women in methadone treatment, women in shelters or clinics), cross-sectional designs, and self-reported risk behaviors. HIV-positive women appear to experience any IPV at rates comparable to HIV-negative women from the same underlying populations; however, their abuse seems to be more frequent and more severe. The authors found only four relevant interventions and none addressed sexually transmitted HIV and partner violence risk reduction simultaneously. There is a critical need for research on (a) causal pathways and cumulative effects of the syndemic issues of violence, HIV, and substance abuse and (b) interventions that target IPV victims at risk for HIV, as well as HIV-positive women who may be experiencing IPV.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of health problems in New South Wales train drivers and the impact of the new national health-assessment standard on train drivers' fitness for work. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective audit of files of all RailCorp train drivers (743) and train driver recruits (283) who were assessed under the new national standard for health assessment of rail safety workers between February 2004 and February 2005. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Smoking status; prevalence of hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and obstructive sleep apnoea; alcohol use disorders; body mass index (BMI); total cholesterol level; fasting blood glucose level; cardiac risk score; fitness status. RESULTS: 25.2% of drivers and 27.9% of recruits were smokers; 43.8% of drivers and 21.9% of recruits were hypertensive; 34.6% of drivers and 31.4% of recruits had high total cholesterol levels (> 5.5 mmol/L). Median BMI values were 29 kg/m(2) (range, 18-59 kg/m(2)) for drivers and 28 kg/m(2) (range, 19-55 kg/m(2)) for recruits. The prevalence of obesity (BMI > or =30.0 kg/m(2)) was higher in both male drivers and recruits compared with the general male population. At initial assessment, 65.1% of drivers and 88.0% of recruits were certified as unconditionally fit for work; 12.4% of drivers and 7.1% of recruits were assessed as temporarily unfit; and 22.5% of drivers and 4.6% of recruits were considered fit subject to review (after periods ranging from 3 to 12 months). Two per cent of drivers and 2.5% of recruits were subsequently deemed to be permanently unfit, the most common reasons being heart conditions, psychiatric disorders, orthopaedic problems, colour vision impairment and sleep apnoea. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease are the most significant health issues affecting train drivers' fitness for work. With the more stringent health assessment and regular review required by the new standard, most drivers can continue with their duties, with the added benefits of improved personal health and greater safety to the rail network and the public.  相似文献
