Diagnosis of post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), particularly the macular form, is difficult when based on microscopy. This study compared the results of nested PCR (91.9% positive samples) with imprint smear microscopy (70.9% positive samples) for 62 PKDL samples. We found that nested PCR, which indicated 87.5% positivity for the macular lesions, compared to 41.6% positivity by imprint smear microscopy, is an efficient method for early diagnosis of PKDL. 相似文献

Chronic inflammatory diseases of the lung are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Many of these disorders can be attributed to abnormal immune responses to environmental stimuli and infections. As such, understanding the innate host defense pathways and their regulatory systems will be critical to developing new approaches to treatment. In this regard, there is increasing interest in the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the regulation of pulmonary innate host defense responses and the inflammatory sequelae in respiratory disease. In this review, we discuss recent findings that indicate an important role for miRNAs in the regulation in mouse models of various respiratory diseases and in host defense against bacterial and viral infection. We also discuss the potential utility and limitations of targeting these molecules as anti-inflammatory strategies and also as a means to improve pathogen clearance from the lung. 相似文献

Urea cycle disorders (UCD) are common during neonatal period, and it is rarely reported in adults. We are reporting a patient presenting with post-partum neuropsychiatric symptoms rapidly progressing to coma. Markedly raised serum ammonia level on presentation with an initial normal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain and normal liver function tests led to the suspicion of UCD, which was confirmed on the basis of urine orotic acid and elevated serum amino acid levels. We had to resort to hemodialysis to correct the hyperammonemic coma, which was unresponsive to conventional anti-ammonia measures. She exhibited remarkable improvement with a progressive decline in serum ammonia with repeated hemodialysis and made a full recovery. Timely diagnosis and early institution of hemodialysis in the setting of a poor neurological status maybe considered a suitable treatment option. 相似文献

ObjectiveTo understand social media growth in both diagnostic and interventional radiology compared to other related specialties by quantifying and comparing hashtag utilization at annual medical conferences.MethodsOfficial annual conference hashtags for Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), American College of Radiology (ACR), Radiological Society of North America, American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and American Society of Clinical Oncology were analyzed from 2015 to 2019, along with the IR hashtag #IRad. Twitter analytics were obtained with the use of Symplur Signals, a healthcare social media analytics platform. Linear regression analysis was performed on the number of tweets and users for each hashtag.ResultsFor annual ACR meetings, the number of tweets/user (6.96 in 2019), retweets/user (4.39 in 2019), and impressions/user (40,051 in 2019) were among the highest of all the specialties studied. This trend was observed despite a smaller number of users among ACR than most other conferences. SIR tweets increased significantly at a rate of 1032.8 tweets/year (P = 0.008) while users also significantly grew at a rate of 212.5 users/years (P = 0.007). #IRad tweets are also growing at a rate of 13,234.8 tweets/year (P = 0.026) while #IRad users are growing at a rate of 1309.5 users/year (P = 0.003). Radiological Society of North America users were significantly decreasing at ?1207.1 users/year (P = 0.018).ConclusionACR consistently had one of the highest counts of tweets/user, retweets/user, and impressions/user compared to the other studied specialties, suggesting that ACR's Twitter users are more active than users outside of the field of radiology.
