The relationship between physical activity, physical fitness and total
radical trapping antioxidant potential (TRAP) was examined in the Northern
Ireland Health and Activity Survey. This was a cross-sectional population
study (n = 1600) using a two-stage probability sample of the population.
TRAP was calculated using the sum of the individual serum antioxidant
concentrations (urate, protein thiols, ascorbate, alpha tocopherol and
bilirubin) multiplied by their respective stoichiometric values. Physical
fitness was determined by estimation of VO2max by extrapolation from
submaximal oxygen uptake, and physical activity was recorded by
computer-assisted interview. Mean serum TRAP concentrations were
significantly higher in males (653 +/- 8.2 mumol/l, mean +/- SEM) compared
to females (564 +/- 8.0 mumol/l) (p < 0.0001). Both male and female
smokers had significantly lower TRAP values than non-smokers (males p <
0.0001, females p = 0.02). In females, there was a positive relationship of
TRAP with age (p < 0.001) and body mass index (p < 0.001) but a
negative relationship with physical fitness (p < 0.05). The known
beneficial effects of exercise and activity do not appear to be directly
mediated through increased antioxidant status.

Fas is a cell surface receptor that transduces cell death signals when cross-linked by agonist antibodies or by fas ligand. In this study, we examined the potential of fas to contribute to oligodendrocyte (OL) injury and demyelination as they occur in the human demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis (MS). Immunohistochemical study of central nervous system (CNS) tissue from MS subjects demonstrated elevated fas expression on OLs in chronic active and chronic silent MS lesions compared with OLs in control tissue from subjects with or without other neurologic diseases. In such lesions, microglia and infiltrating lymphocytes displayed intense immunoreactivity to fas ligand. In dissociated glial cell cultures prepared from human adult CNS tissue, fas expression was restricted to OLs. Fas ligation with the anti-fas monoclonal antibody M3 or with the fas–ligand induced rapid OL cell membrane lysis, assessed by LDH release and trypan blue uptake and subsequent cell death. In contrast to the activity of fas in other cellular systems, dying OLs did not exhibit evidence of apoptosis, assessed morphologically and by terminal transferase–mediated d-uridine triphosphate-biotin nick-end-labeling staining for DNA fragmentation. Other stimuli such as C2-ceramide were capable of inducing rapid apoptosis in OLs. Antibodies directed at other surface molecules expressed on OLs or the M33 nonactivating anti-fas monoclonal antibody did not induce cytolysis of OLs. 1. Isolated kidneys taken from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) were perfused over a range of perfusion pressures. 2. Lithium clearance was used as an index of proximal tubule sodium handling. 3. When the perfusate contained an oncotic agent (albumin, 6.7 g/dl) the SHR kidneys performed differently from the WKY kidneys with a reduction in inulin clearance, sodium excretion, fractional sodium excretion and fractional lithium excretion [at 105 mmHg (14 kPa) perfusion pressure, SHR 6.0 +/- 1.1% vs WKY 12.6 +/- 2.4% (mean +/- SEM); at 150 mmHg (20 kPa), SHR 17.1 +/- 1.6% vs WKY 27.0 +/- 2.3%]. Calculated indices of distal tubular function showed no major differences between SHR and WKY. 4. When kidneys were perfused without oncotic agent in the perfusate the differences between SHR and WKY in tubular handling of sodium and lithium were largely abolished. 5. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that increased sodium reabsorption occurs in the proximal tubules of the kidneys of SHR and suggest that this is an intrinsic property of the kidney, not immediately dependent on neural or humoral factors. Summary The aim of the present report was to compare the current patterns of incidence and prevalence of end-stage renal failure and
mode of renal replacement therapy in patients with Type 1 (insulin-dependent) and Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes
mellitus in Europe. All Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic patients recorded on the Registry of the European Dialysis and Transplant
Association as being alive on renal replacement therapy were analysed according to age, sex, geographic distribution, and
mode of therapy (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or renal transplantation). During 1990 3981 diabetic patients commenced
renal replacement therapy in Europe, and at 31 December 1990 a total of 15, 197 diabetic patients were receiving treatment.
One-third were reported to be Type 2 diabetic patients, but the true proportion is expected to be higher. Both male and female
Type 2 diabetic patients were older than Type 1 patients. Major geographic variations were observed; annual acceptance of
Type 2 diabetic patients for treatment was greatest in Austria (10.7 per million) and equal to Type 1 patients, whereas the
number of Type 1 diabetic patients was four times that of Type 2 patients in Sweden, Finland and Norway. Overall, the majority
of Type 2 diabetic patients (80%) were treated by haemodialysis, 14% by peritoneal dialysis, and 6% had a functioning renal
transplant. However, transplantation was the preferred option in young patients (48% of 25–34 year olds) and in Sweden and
Norway (45% of all Type 2 patients).

Gap junctions (GJs) are expressed in most cell types of the nervous system, including neuronal stem cells, neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, cells of the blood brain barrier (endothelial cells and astrocytes) and under inflammatory conditions in microglia/macrophages. GJs connect cells by the docking of two hemichannels, one from each cell with each hemichannel being formed by 6 proteins named connexins (Cx). Unapposed hemichannels (uHC) also can be open on the surface of the cells allowing the release of different intracellular factors to the extracellular space. GJs provide a mechanism of cell-to-cell communication between adjacent cells that enables the direct exchange of intracellular messengers, such as calcium, nucleotides, IP(3), and diverse metabolites, as well as electrical signals that ultimately coordinate tissue homeostasis, proliferation, differentiation, metabolism, cell survival and death. Despite their essential functions in physiological conditions, relatively little is known about the role of GJs and uHC in human diseases, especially within the nervous system. Although allostatic load has been investigated in mood and anxiety disorders, no prior study has investigated developmental change in allostatic load as a precursor to schizotypal personality. This study employed a multilevel developmental framework to examine whether the development of increased allostatic load, as indicated by impaired sympathetic nervous system habituation from ages 3 to 11 years, predisposes to schizotypal personality at age 23 years. Electrodermal activity to six aversive tones was recorded in 995 subjects at age 3 years and again at 11 years. Habituation slopes at both ages were used to create groups who showed a developmental increase in habituation (decreased allostatic load), and those who showed a developmental decrease in habituation (increased allostatic load). Children who showed a developmental increase in allostatic load from ages 3 to 11 years had higher levels of schizotypal personality at 23 years. A breakdown of total schizotypy scores demonstrated specificity of findings to cognitive-perceptual features of schizotypy. Findings are the first to document a developmental abnormality in allostasis in relation to adult schizotypal personality. The relative failure to develop normal habituation to repeated stressors throughout childhood is hypothesized to result in an accumulation of allostatic load and consequently increased positive symptom schizotypy in adulthood. 相似文献

The effect of an acute bout of moderate treadmill walking on behavioral and neuroelectric indexes of the cognitive control of attention and applied aspects of cognition involved in school-based academic performance were assessed. A within-subjects design included 20 preadolescent participants (age=9.5±0.5 years; eight female) to assess exercise-induced changes in performance during a modified flanker task and the Wide Range Achievement Test 3. The resting session consisted of cognitive testing followed by a cardiorespiratory fitness assessment to determine aerobic fitness. The exercise session consisted of 20 min of walking on a motor-driven treadmill at 60% of estimated maximum heart rate followed by cognitive testing once heart rate returned to within 10% of pre-exercise levels. Results indicated an improvement in response accuracy, larger P3 amplitude, and better performance on the academic achievement test following aerobic exercise relative to the resting session. Collectively, these findings indicate that single, acute bouts of moderately-intense aerobic exercise (i.e. walking) may improve the cognitive control of attention in preadolescent children, and further support the use of moderate acute exercise as a contributing factor for increasing attention and academic performance. These data suggest that single bouts of exercise affect specific underlying processes that support cognitive health and may be necessary for effective functioning across the lifespan. 相似文献

Invasion of the deer ked (Lipoptena cervi), an ectoparasitic fly commonly found in cervids, has been rapid in Finland during the last four decades. As the distribution
area of this species has expanded from the south towards the northern latitudes, the associated problems have become more
evident. Various animals such as horses, cattle and especially reindeer have been reported to host this parasite. Moreover,
in certain areas, the deer ked causes major inconveniences for humans potentially limiting recreational activities in forests.
We wanted to study if deer ked parasitism and intensity of the infection in winter time could be detected by using visual
examination of the snow on cervid bedding sites and by analysing biotic samples found from the bedding sites. Our results
demonstrate that chronic deer ked infection causes reddish-brown snow discolouration (host tissue fluid and deer ked faeces)
on the bedding sites to the extent that parasitism can be diagnosed. Hence, we suggest that deer ked infection prevalence
and range expansion could be rapidly monitored using our new practical and reliable method. In the future, bedding site analyses
will likely be useful in predicting and potentially preventing the negative effects of this ecologically and socio-economically
