Inoculation of mice with Corynebacterium parvum 14 days before intraperitoneal inoculation of Mycoplasma pulmonis resulted in arthritis of significantly lesser magnitude than in control mice as measured both clinically and histologically. Mycoplasmas were isolated from the joints of mice inoculated with C. parvum less frequently than from control mice when the arthritis was maximal. Mycoplasmas were also isolated in smaller numbers from the blood and joints of mice pretreated with C. parvum within 2 hr after M. pulmonis inoculation. Complement-fixing antibody to M. pulmonis did not account for the differences observed. C. parvum given during an established mycoplasmal infection, although capable of enhancing elimination of M. pulmonis from the joints of infected mice, had no effect upon the arthritis as measured clinically or histologically. The results provide evidence that immunomodulators such as C. parvum are capable of enhancing elimination of mycoplasmas from the joints of infected mice prior to or after the induction of arthritis.  相似文献

To determine whether or not the frequency of migraine attacks increased at weekends in employed patients and if so, whether or not this was related to the type of migraine, 35 female patients prospectively recorded the presence or absence of migraine attacks daily over a six-week period. They were also asked to estimate the frequency with which emotional factors predisposed to their migraine attacks and to provide details of their occupation. A diagnosis of common (migraine without aura) or classical migraine (migraine with aura) was made according to both the criteria of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Classification of Headache and those of the International Headache Society. Eleven percent and 6% of patients, respectively, felt that emotional factors "usually" or "always" predisposed to migraine attacks. There was no significant increase in the frequency of migraine attacks at weekends in either the total group or in the employed patients. Similarly, the type of migraine made no difference to the results. There was therefore no evidence for a delayed onset of migraine at weekends related to the weekday stress of employment.  相似文献

Response to pharmacologic treatments may identify groups of disorders with a common pathophysiology. The authors applied a treatment-response model, based on four classes of antidepressants (tricyclic types, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, serotonin uptake inhibitors, and atypical agents), to the medical literature. The model identified eight disorders that may share a pathophysiologic abnormality: major depression, bulimia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity, cataplexy, migraine, and irritable bowel syndrome. Phenomenologic and family studies support this grouping. If the model is validated, this family of disorders, which the authors term "affective spectrum disorder," would represent one of the most prevalent diseases in the population.  相似文献

Organophosphorus (OP) pesticides are used extensively throughout the world to control undesirable pest species. The primary mechanism of action for OP insecticides is inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), an enzyme dynamically involved in cholinergic neurotransmission. Extensive inhibition of AChE leads to accumulation of acetylcholine in the synapse, disruption of normal impulse flow and subsequent signs of toxicity, including autonomic dysfunction, involuntary movements, muscle fasciculations and a host of others. It is generally believed that young individuals are more sensitive to the neurotoxic effects of these agents relative to adults. Essentially all studies addressing age-related differences in sensitivity to these toxicants have examined responses to acute exposures, however, using acute toxicity (lethality) as the endpoint. As the biochemical mechanism of toxicity for this class of toxicants (inhibition of AChE) is well known and considering that low level, repeated exposures are of great concern to the general public, we propose that evidence of neurochemical alterations, especially when exposures occur during development and maturation, is a more relevant endpoint of toxicity than lethality for estimating susceptibility. This report briefly summarizes previous and ongoing work in our laboratory which examines the relative sensitivity to these toxicants between young and adult rats.  相似文献

Interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels have been shown to be increased in a number of autoimmune disorders and have recently been shown to be elevated in the serum of schizophrenic patients. Given the involvement of the CNS in schizophrenia, levels of interleukin-6 in the CSF are also of interest. Thus, we examined levels of both CSF and serum IL-6 concomitantly to determine if these levels were different from control values. In addition, we examined these measures in patients both on and off antipsychotic drugs to determine if any medication or exacerbation effects may account for the difference from controls. CSF IL-6 was measured by ELISA in 61 drug-free male schizophrenic (DSM-IIIR) patients and 25 well-screened healthy male control subjects. Serum IL-6 was measured in 43 of the 61 patients, and in 16 control subjects. Serum IL-6 was significantly higher in the schizophrenic patients compared to control subjects. CSF IL-6 was also higher in the patients, but the difference was not statistically significant. Paired data showed no medication or exacerbation effects on CSF IL-6, but plasma IL-6 significantly decreased in patients that experienced an exacerbation after medication withdrawal. The results indicate that IL-6 levels may be altered in schizophrenia. The relative decrease in exacerbated patients following haloperidol withdrawal may be indicative of a compensatory response of plasma IL-6 levels to relapse.  相似文献

Previously, Edwards, Pope & Schoor, Vision Research, 38, 705-717, demonstrated that transient disparity vergence appears to be mediated by a system that employs a single low-pass sensitive spatial channel whose performance is not reduced by dichoptic mixed contrasts (no contrast paradox) or dichoptic mixed spatial frequencies. This broadband tuning to both contrast and spatial frequency may be indicative of a second-order or non-linear envelope extraction system. The current study tests for lack of tuning to orientation and luminance polarity which are typically taken as evidence of a second-order system. We found that when the transient vergence system was simultaneously presented with both convergent and divergent disparities, there was a small but distinct bias in favor of responding in the direction defined by matched orientations or luminance polarities over unmatched pairs. Although less frequent, responses to orthogonal carriers or opposite luminance polarities were possible. The vergence system could match a horizontal with a vertical carrier, or a light gaussian with a dark gaussian. The degree of orientation or luminance polarity tuning varied inversely with the disparity magnitude over the range of 2.5-5 degrees, and the orientation tuning peaked at a spatial frequency about 2 cpd. At all disparities tested, however, the tuning was very broad, and other candidate features for mediating transient-vergence need to be investigated.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study blink frequency changes and levels of ocular discomfort during work at a video display terminal, and the effects on these parameters of augmented or reduced humidification of the ocular surface.Blink rate was measured from recordings of the electrical signal evoked by the contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle. Blink rate and interblink intervals were analyzed at rest and during performance of a task with a computer (playing a card game) for 10 or 30 min in steady environmental conditions and during application of a continuous stream of air to the face. In two separate sessions, the effect of pretreatment with humidifying ocular solutions of different elastoviscosity (balanced salt solution or elastoviscous 0.1% Hylan A solution) was assayed. At the end of each experimental period, the subjects marked the level of ocular discomfort experienced on a 0-10 cm visual analogue scale.The blink frequency at rest (12.4+/-1.2 blinks min-1) was reduced significantly (to 10.3+/-1.1 blinks min-1) by pretreatment with elastoviscous eyedrops both with and without air applied to the face. This effect was not obtained with balanced salt solution. During performance of the visual task for 10 or 30 min, basal blink rate decreased significantly, to about 40% of the control value. Neither application of an air jet on the face nor application of eye solutions of different viscosity modified this reduced blink rate.A low degree of ocular discomfort developed after performance of the visual task that was enhanced by air application to the face. This discomfort was reduced by pretreatment with ocular solutions, the elastoviscous eye solution being more efficient than the balanced salt solution. Interblink interval duration was also more regular after treatment with the elastoviscous solution.These data suggest that blink rate at rest is maintained in part by activation of sensory receptors of the cornea and conjunctiva, which are stimulated by desiccation of the ocular surface. Reduction of eye blink frequency elicited by the performance of a visual task with a computer appears to depend on central neural mechanisms that are quite independent of peripheral sensory inputs. The reduction of blink frequency consecutive to computer use was associated with a sensation of discomfort that was attenuated more effectively by elastoviscous eyedrops than by regular balanced salt solution.  相似文献

Purpose

Upper ureteral defects are often too extensive to repair by direct anastomosis or with use of a bladder flap. Ureteral substitution may be the only remaining alternative to restoring urinary drainage from the kidney to the bladder. This effect is usually achieved by interposing a segment of small bowel between the proximal collecting system and bladder. If ileum is not available other substitution alternatives must be sought.

Materials and Methods

We report a new technique in which a tube constructed from a small piece of ascending colon was used to replace a large ureteral defect.

Results

Excellent short-term results were achieved by replacing the strictured ureteral segment with a reconfigured colon segment as shown by symptomatic and radiographic improvement.

Conclusions

A reconfigured colon segment can be used for ureteral reconstruction in the patient with limited alternatives. This tube has several advantages for ureteral reconstruction over ileal segments.  相似文献
