Histamine poisoning due to inhalation and skin contact with fish products is rarely described in the literature. This study presents a case of occupational histamine poisoning by spoiled fish flour via inhalation, skin and eye contact. Shipments of fish flour transported in black or blue bags, depending on the source, were handled by 20 harbour workers. Ten workers handling blue bags developed allergy-like skin, eye, gastrointestinal, respiratory and cardiac symptoms within 30 min. Workers handling black bags were symptom-free, except for minimal eye irritation. After consultation with the Poison Control Centre histamine poisoning was suspected. The histamine content, as determined by thin-layer chromatography, was 10-fold higher in samples from the blue than from the black bags (510 mg/100 g flour compared with 50 mg/100 g flour, respectively). Part of the shipment was labelled as hazardous for human health with permission for further usage only under specific personal protective measures. It is suggested that the highest permissible levels of histamine in fish flour and similar products should be set and legally adopted. 相似文献
Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious animal disease caused by a virus in the genus Morbillivirus, family Paramyxoviridae. This infection is responsible for high morbidity and mortality in sheep and goats and in some small wild ruminant species. The huge number of small ruminants, which are reared in the endemic areas makes PPR a serious disease threatening the livelihood of poor farmers. Taking advantage of the closely relationship between rinderpest and PPR viruses, the attenuated rinderpest vaccine was used in the control of PPR. It is now replaced by the homologous attenuated PPR vaccine. Unfortunately, animals that have received this vaccine cannot be distinguished serologically from infected animals. With the advent of DNA recombinant technology, efforts are being made to develop effective PPR marker vaccines to enable such differentiation and which would allow countries to implement both vaccination and disease surveillance programmes at the same time. 相似文献
The pro-oxidant activity of uranium (U) was assessed in kidney and testes of male rats, tissues in which toxic effects of this metal are well established. Eight groups of Sprague-Dawley rats received uranyl acetate dihydrate (UAD) in the drinking water at 0, 10, 20, and 40 mg/kgday for 3 months. Rats in four groups were concurrently subjected to restraint during 2 h/day throughout the study. Histopathological examination of the kidneys revealed an angiomatose transformation in U-treated animals. In kidney, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) levels and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) activity were correlated with U exposure. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was significantly enhanced in both kidney and testis. Oral UAD administration induced a decrease of glutathione reductase (GR) and reduced glutathione (GSH) in the male reproductive tract. The results of this study suggest that graded doses of U elicit depletion of the antioxidant defence system of the rat and induce oxidative stress in testes and kidneys. Although at the current U doses, restraint stress scarcely showed additional adverse effects, its potential influence should not be underrated. 相似文献
The objective of the study was to evaluate the anticataleptic effect of Withania somnifera (WS) extract, on haloperidol-induced catalepsy in albino mice. Catalepsy was induced with haloperidol (1 mg/kg) i.p. in five groups of male albino mice (n = 6). Three groups received Withania somnifera extract (1.7, 4.25, 8.5 mg/kg) respectively, one group received scopolamine (1 mg/kg) and one group received the vehicle (1% gum acacia) orally, 30 min prior to haloperidol administration. Catalepsy was measured by using standard bar test at 30, 60, 90, 120 and 240 min. This constituted the acute study. For the chronic study, the drugs were administered for 6 more days. Catalepsy was again measured on day 7. Animals were then sacrificed by cervical dislocation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was estimated in the brain. In this study, Withania somnifera extract treated groups showed a dose dependent reduction in cataleptic scores, both in the acute and chronic study. The SOD activity in brain was also found to be lowered in the WS (4.25 mg, 8.5 mg/kg) treated groups. In conclusion, Withania somnifera was found to be more efficacious than scopolamine in reversing haloperidol induced catalepsy. A clear correlation between the SOD levels and cataleptic scores was observed. We believe that the antioxidant properties of this drug could have contributed to the anticataleptic effect. 相似文献
Sites of inflammation with prominent macrophage infiltration, such as wounds and certain tumors, are uniquely deficient in free arginine. The effects of arginine availability on macrophage physiology were investigated. When cultured in media containing less than 0.1 mM L-arginine, rat resident peritoneal macrophages exhibited enhanced spreading, tumor cytotoxicity, superoxide production, phagocytosis, and protein synthesis. Thus, arginine concentrations similar to those found in sites of inflammation can augment macrophage functions, while those found in plasma (approximately 0.1 mM) and in commonly used culture media (0.4 to 1.2 mM) are inhibitory. Culture in homoarginine, but not D-arginine, ornithine, citrulline, urea, histidine, or lysine also inhibited macrophage tumor cytotoxicity, indicating the specificity of the effect. In contrast to resident macrophages, the tumor cytotoxicity of peritoneal macrophages obtained after C. parvum injection was suppressed by culture in arginine-deficient media. However, L-arginine-deficient media enhanced all other activation-associated functions in C. parvum-elicited macrophages as in resident cells. Arginine-free wound fluid promoted resident macrophage tumoricidal activity when compared with rat serum, and again, the addition of L-arginine was inhibitory. The marked effects of L-arginine availability on macrophage functions, together with the knowledge that these cells modify the extracellular arginine concentration in sites of inflammation through arginase, provide evidence for an autoregulatory mechanism of macrophage activation. 相似文献
In recent years, it has been demonstrated that oral aluminium (Al) exposure can produce growth retardation, delayed ossification and an increased incidence of foetal abnormalities in rats and mice. On the other hand, it has been also suggested that silicon may have a protective effect in limiting oral Al absorption. The aim of the present study was to assess whether dietary silicon could prevent against Al-induced maternal and developmental toxicity in mice. On gestation days 6-15, Al nitrate nonahydrate (398 mg/kg/day) was given by gavage to three groups of pregnant animals, which also received silicon in drinking water at concentrations of 0, 118 and 236 mg/l on days 7-18 of gestation. Three additional groups of pregnant mice received respectively: 270.6 mg/kg of sodium nitrate (gavage), and silicon in drinking water at 118 and 236 mg/l. Although silicon administration at 236 mg/l significantly reduced the percentage of Al-induced deaths, abortions and early deliveries, neither 118 nor 236 mg/l of silicon produced significant ameliorations on Al-induced foetotoxicity. Under the current experimental conditions dietary silicon was not effective in protecting against Al-induced developmental toxicity. 相似文献
There is no single available measurement for evaluating the short-term response to nutrition therapy. The ideal parameter should have high sensitivity and specificity and should be unaffected by non-nutritional factors. A literature review suggested that plasma retinol-binding protein and prealbumin concentrations change earlier than albumin and transferrin levels and appear to correlate better with nitrogen balance during nutrition therapy. That conclusion was supported by our own findings in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition and following the transition to oral or enteral feedings. Although concentrations of these plasma proteins have been shown to be affected by stress and renal and hepatic disease, they appear to be more sensitive indicators of the adequacy of nutrition support than other more commonly used assessment parameters. 相似文献
Introduction: In comparison to their HIV-negative counterparts, people living with HIV (PLWH) have a higher prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in various anatomical sites coupled with increased HPV persistence, higher risk of HPV-related tumors, and faster disease progression.
Areas covered: Gender-neutral prevention strategies for HPV-related cancers in PLWH discussed: ABC approach, HPV vaccination, antiretroviral treatment (ART), anal cancer screening, and smoking cessation. Gender specific strategies: cervical cancer screening reduces the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer and circumcision might reduce the risk of HPV infections in men.
Expert commentary: HPV-related cancer incidence has not declined (e.g. cervical cancer) and has even increased (e.g. anal cancer) in the ART era, demanding an effective HPV prevention strategy. HPV vaccination should be introduced into national prevention programs worldwide immediately because current prophylactic vaccines are safe, tolerable, and immunogenic in PLWH. HPV vaccine efficacy trials in PLWH are essential to determine the most appropriate immunization schedule. The population most at risk of anal cancer is HIV-positive men who have sex with men, who are not protected by herd immunity if only the female population is vaccinated. Unvaccinated PLWH need enhanced surveillance for early detection of HPV-related cancers and their precursors. 相似文献
