Isolation and interspecies-transfer of a plasmid from Pasteurella multocida encoding for streptomycin resistance

A plasmid encoding streptomycin-resistance could be detected in 13 of 32 Pasteurella multocida-cultures isolated from cattle and swine. The plasmid of these cultures proved to be similar upon Southern blot hybridization. It could be transformed into Escherichia coli 490A, where it also expressed streptomycin resistance.     

Acute oral captopril inhibits angiotensin converting enzyme activity in human cerebrospinal fluid

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity in human plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), was measured by a fluorimetric method, following an acute oral dose (75 mg) of captopril. A decrease of approximately 60% in enzyme activity was observed in CSF, suggesting that the drug penetrates the blood/brain barrier (BBB) in sufficient amounts to inhibit the ACE in CSF. The activity of CSF enkephalinase, an enzyme present in human brain and inhibited in vitro by an elevated concentration of captopril, was, however, unaffected by the acute drug administration. It is proposed that the antihypertensive effect of captopril in humans may be due, at least in part, to the inhibition of ACE contained within brain structures.     

In vitro leukemic cell differentiation in metal-depleted media

Lymphocytes of children with T cell and pre-B cell acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) were cultured in media with different concentrations of Fe, Cu and Zn to detect a possible effect of these ions on leukemic cells. Thymidine uptake was elevated in non-mitogen stimulated ALL cells and increased after mitogen stimulation, whereas intracellular ferritin, Fe and Cu, elevated before culture, decreased thereafter; pre-B ALL cells, positive only for cytoplasmic mu chains, became positive for surface immunoglobulins and released a detectable amount of them; low T4/T8 ratio in cells from T cell ALL returned to normal values after culture. These findings were present only in media with minimal concentrations of Fe, Cu and Zn and suggest that regulation of intracellular levels of these metals may induce some differentiation of leukemic cells.     

Hyperfractionated total body irradiation as part of autologous bone marrow transplantation

On 14 patients with acute leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) was performed together with high dose cyclophosphamide and hyperfractionated total body irradiation. The radiotherapy was given at a total dose of 13.2 Gy distributed over eleven fractions of 1.2 Gy and four days. All eleven patients transplanted in complete remission are alive, among them ten in unmaintained complete remission at a longest observation time of two years.     

Effects of a community-based healthy heart program on increasing healthy women's physical activity: a randomized controlled trial guided by Community-based Participatory Research (CBPR)

Background  

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading killer of women in most developed areas of the world. Rates of physical inactivity and poor nutrition, which are two of the most important modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease in women, are substantial. This study sought to examine the effectiveness of a community-based lifestyle-modification program on increasing women's physical activity in a randomized trial guided by community-based participatory research (CBPR) methods.     

Income-related health inequality in Belgium: a longitudinal perspective

This paper provides new evidence on the degree of income-related inequality in self-assessed health in Belgium. First of all, we combine the time dimension, which has been shown to be very important in the analysis of inequality, and the use of the recently developed interval regression approach to transform a categorical health variable in a continuous one. Second, we measure how the long-run inequality differs from the short-run inequality. Finally, we decompose this health-related income mobility index as well as the long-run concentration index (CI) itself into its contributors. Using data from the panel survey of Belgian households (1994–2002), we find that health is pro-rich distributed and that its inequality is underestimated by 9.45% when neglecting the dynamics of individuals over time. Income, education, job status and age are the most important contributors in the CI and the difference between the short-run and long-run inequality.      

Evaluation of wound contraction and epithelialization after subcutaneous administration of Theranekron® in cows

Ten bulls (age 7 months, weight 302 ± 15 kg) were used in this study. After sterile preparation of skin, a full thickness wound (20 × 20 mm) was created in each bull. The bulls were randomly assigned into two groups: group 1 received 6 ml Theranekron subcutaneously and group 2 penicillin banzatine 10,000 IU/kg IM. These doses were repeated 6 days after initial wounding. At days 0, 3, 6, 10 and 14, digital photographs were taken from the wounds to calculate wound contraction and epithelialization using geometry. Chi-square test was performed for statistical analysis using SPSS 9 for Windows. There was no significant differences in wound contraction between trial groups (P > 0.05) but a statistical difference was seen in epithelialization between groups (P < 0.05). Epithelialization is one of the most important factors in wound healing. According to the results of the present study, Theranekron can significantly stimulate epithelialization in full thickness wounds in cows during the first 14 days of healing.
