Comparison of Patch Materials for Pulmonary Artery Reconstruction

Autologous pericardium was associate with the lowest reintervention and was free. Multivariable analysis demonstrated lack of superiority of homograft branch patch, which clearly has a much higher cost.

Lifespan extension of Drosophila melanogaster through hormesis by repeated mild heat stress

We assessed the impact of repeated episodes of a mild heat stress on lifespan, fecundity, heat stress resistance and Hsp70 expression in Drosophila melanogaster. There was a significant increase in lifespan of females repeatedly exposed to a mild heat stress when measured in both a pair and a group situation. There was no effect on fecundity when the flies were first exposed to the mild heat stress at an age later than 3 days old, but when it did occur on day 3, there was a significant effect on cumulative fecundity levels over 18 days. The negative fitness effect appears to be the result of a direct cessation or reduction of oviposition during the first bout of stress exposure, and is influenced by the age at which this first exposure occurs. The mild heat stress had no impacton egg viability. The mild heat stress exposures increased resistance to potentially lethal heat stress and levels of Hsp70 expression in heat-exposed flies were higher than those in controls. Two cases of Kallmann syndrome associated with empty sella

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a developmental disease characterized by the association of isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia/hyposmia. We report an unusual presentation of two females with KS and empty sella. These females, aged at 20 and 29-year-old, presented primary amenorrhea with prepubertal estradiol and low gonadotropin levels. No other significant clinical signs were observed. Empty sella was observed on MRI in both cases. Sequencing of FGFR1 gene, recently implicated in autosomal form of KS, was performed and one splicing mutation (IVS14 + 1G > A) was identified in one patient.     

APC promoter methylation and protein expression in hepatocellular carcinoma

Purpose We investigated the impact of promoter methylation on APC protein expression in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and methods 50 patients [HCC (n=19), liver metastasis (n=19), cholangiocellular cancer (n=7), and benign liver tumors (n=5)] were studied for methylation using Methylight analysis. APC mutation was investigated by protein truncation test and direct sequencing of genomic DNA. The protein expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis. Results The APC promoter was hypermethylated in 81.8% of non-cancerous liver tissue samples. All HCC samples and ten patients with liver metastasis (52.6%) exhibited APC promoter methylation. The degree of methylation was significantly higher in samples from HCC compared to the non-cancerous liver tissue samples (63.1% vs. 24.98%; p=0.001). The level of APC protein expression was significantly reduced in HCC samples compared to that of the corresponding non-tumor liver tissue (p<0.05). Conclusions Promoter methylation of the APC gene seems to be of significance in hepatocarcinogenesis and results in reduced protein expression in HCC. Interestingly, APC promoter methylation is also present in the vast majority of non-cancerous liver tissue whose (patho)physiological function remains unresolved.     

Clinical applicability of nursing outcomes in the evolution of orthopedic patients with Impaired Physical Mobility

AIM:

to evaluate the clinical applicability of outcomes, according to the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) in the evolution of orthopedic patients with Impaired Physical Mobility

METHOD:

longitudinal study conducted in 2012 in a university hospital, with 21 patients undergoing Total Hip Arthroplasty, evaluated daily by pairs of trained data collectors. Data were collected using an instrument containing five Nursing Outcomes, 16 clinical indicators and a five point Likert scale, and statistically analyzed.

RESULTS:

The outcomes Body Positioning: self-initiated, Mobility, Knowledge: prescribed activity, and Fall Prevention Behavior presented significant increases in mean scores when comparing the first and final evaluations (p<0.001) and (p=0.035).

CONCLUSION:

the use of the NOC outcomes makes it possible to demonstrate the clinical progression of orthopedic patients with Impaired Physical Mobility, as well as its applicability in this context.
