The objective of this study was to analyse pattern of referral to Restorative Dentistry Consultation Clinics in a Dental Teaching Hospital. Patient demographic details and referral information were collected on new patient clinics. The majority of patients were female (62.1%). The greatest proportion of patients, 41.6%, was referred from the adjacent urban area. The highest percentage of referrals was from general practitioners, (37.6%). The main referral reasons were periodontal (24.7%), fixed prosthodontics (18.6%), endodontics (10.7%) and removable prosthodontics (8.3%). The study clearly showed that the majority of patients referred were female and from close proximity to the Hospital. Patients were referred for a broad range of restorative reasons.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of fatty acid spin label resonance spectra and freeze fracture micrographs of sonicated dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine vesicles in the absence and presence of concanavalin A demonstrate a strong interaction of concanavalin A with these lipid membranes, which results in fusion of the vesicles. The rate of this reaction as followed with use of magnetic resonance exhibits a pronounced maximum at 36 degrees, the midpoint of the phase transition range of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine vesicles. This maximum is discussed in terms of structural fluctuations, which are maximal in the phase transition range of the membranes.  相似文献

This study examined the clinical usefulness of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) performed using an automated single voxel technique at 1.0 T field strength in a district general hospital magnetic resonance (MR) scanner in the assessment of older people referred to a memory clinic with suspected dementia. Of 50 elderly subjects (M:F 20:30) examined and followed-up clinically over more than 2 years, 20 had clinical Alzheimer's disease (AD), 18 had clinical vascular dementia, six had mixed features and three were normal. Three normal volunteers were also studied. MRS was performed at the same time as structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), added <15 min to the examination and was well-tolerated in all patients studied. Patients with AD had significantly higher myoinositol/creatine (MI/Cr) ratios (mean +/- S.D.: 0.82 +/- 0.04) compared to those with vascular dementia (mean +/-S. D.: 0.71 +/- 0.07, P<0.00001) and normal subjects (mean +/- S.D.: 0.72 +/- 0.036, P<0.0002); there was little overlap between the AD and vascular groups. The mixed dementia group also had significantly higher MI/Cr ratios (mean +/- S.D.: 0.80 +/- 0.05) than vascular dementia (P<0.01) and normal (P<0.03) groups, but with considerable overlap. No significant differences were shown for N-acetyl aspartate or choline/creatine ratios between the different clinical groups. These data suggest that MI/Cr ratios can distinguish patients with AD from normal subjects and those with sub-cortical ischemic vascular dementia and that MRS will be useful to clinicians managing persons with AD in a district general hospital setting.  相似文献

A mathematical model of the periodic, rippled P beta' phase of phosphatidylcholine is described. In this model the P beta' phase shows a periodic variation in membrane properties corresponding to a lateral periodic variation between fluid-like and crystal-like states. The model is based on a curvature-dependent Landau-de Gennes free-energy functional. Our proposed form of the curvature-dependent free energy remedies a subtle mathematical flaw in an earlier model having similar physical content [Falkovitz, M. F., Seul, M., Frisch, H. L. & McConnell, H. M. (1982) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 79, 3918-3921].  相似文献

Glycophorin, the major glycoprotein of human erythrocytes, has been isolated and reincorporated into lipid vesicles. Freeze-fracture electron microscopy shows the reincorporated glycophorin to occur as small particles in vesicle fracture faces while the etch faces are smooth. The glycoprotein has a tendency to cluster into groups of several particles. Evidence is presented that, although lipids in immediate contact with glycopherin are likely somewhat immobilized, the entire lipid-protein complex has a tendency to occupy fluid regions of the bilayer. Reincorporated glycophorin assumes its proposed conformation in the intact erythrocyte in so far as it penetrates the hydrophobic membrane interior while its N-terminal end with attached carbohydrate residues is exposed to the aqueous compartment and is available as a specific recognition site.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Increased numbers of apoptotic neutrophils, and impaired monocyte/macrophage clearance of apoptotic cells, have been demonstrated in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). CD44 is implicated in the clearance of apoptotic neutrophils. OBJECTIVE: To determine the expression of CD44 on peripheral blood monocytes and neutrophils in SLE, and examine the relations with disease activity and numbers of circulating apoptotic neutrophils. METHODS: Peripheral blood was sampled from 31 patients with SLE, 19 healthy normal subjects, and 19 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Monocyte and neutrophil density of surface CD44 expression was determined by immunofluorescence labelling and flow cytometry, and results expressed as mean channel fluorescence (MCF) values. Neutrophil apoptosis was measured by morphology in 15 patients with SLE, nine with RA, and six normal subjects. RESULTS: Monocyte CD44 expression was significantly lower in SLE (median MCF 4.71) than in healthy normal subjects (median MCF 5.61) and controls with RA (median MCF 5.39). Neutrophil CD44 expression was also significantly lower in SLE (median MCF 1.95) than in healthy normal subjects (median MCF 2.37) and controls with RA (median MCF 2.60). Monocyte, but not neutrophil, CD44 expression correlated negatively with the percentage of apoptotic neutrophils. There was no significant correlation of monocyte or neutrophil CD44 expression in SLE with disease activity or damage. CONCLUSIONS: Monocyte and neutrophil CD44 expression is reduced in SLE, and this may contribute to the impaired recognition and clearance of apoptotic neutrophils by monocyte derived macrophages.  相似文献

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is currently encountered after bone marrow transplantation and transfusion. GVHD associated with transfusion (TA-GVHD) in apparently immunocompetent recipients has been recently reported with increasing frequency. A consistent finding in many of these cases is that the recipient received blood from a donor homozygous for one of the recipient's HLA haplotypes. However, the observed frequency of TA-GVHD is much lower than the estimated probability of this donor/recipient combination. The potential role of recipient immune responses in controlling TA-GVHD was investigated using an analogous murine model in which GVHD is induced by the injection of parental lymphoid cells into unirradiated F1 hybrid recipients. The effect of various immune manipulations of the recipient of GVHD induction was assessed by determining the number of donor lymphoid cells required to induce GVHD responses. Whereas depletion of recipient CD4+ cells increased the number of donor cells needed to induce GVHD, depletion of recipient CD8+ and natural killer cells resulted in fewer donor cells being needed to induce a GVHD response. These studies suggest a central role for functioning recipient CD8 and natural killer cells in the down-regulation of TA-GVHD development in recipients.  相似文献

Application of electric fields tangent to the plane of a confined patch of fluid bilayer membrane can create lateral concentration gradients of the lipids. A thermodynamic model of this steady-state behavior is developed for binary systems and tested with experiments in supported lipid bilayers. The model uses Flory’s approximation for the entropy of mixing and allows for effects arising when the components have different molecular areas. In the special case of equal area molecules the concentration gradient reduces to a Fermi–Dirac distribution. The theory is extended to include effects from charged molecules in the membrane. Calculations show that surface charge on the supporting substrate substantially screens electrostatic interactions within the membrane. It also is shown that concentration profiles can be affected by other intermolecular interactions such as clustering. Qualitative agreement with this prediction is provided by comparing phosphatidylserine- and cardiolipin-containing membranes.  相似文献
