N-ω-Carbethoxypentyl-4-quinolones: A New Class of Leukotriene Biosynthesis Inhibitors

6-[(4-Quinolinyl)oxy]hexanoic acids and the corresponding esters were designed and synthesized as inhibitors of the production of arachidonic acid metabolites. The inhibitory activities were assayed in vitro by evaluation of serum leukotriene B₄ and thromboxane B₂ production. While all 6-[(4-quinolinyl)oxy]hexanoic acids and their esters proved to be inactive, the N-alkyl-4-quinolones, obtained as by-products in their synthesis, were found to be a new class of leukotriene biosynthesis inhibitors.     

Polymerization of lactams, 88. Copolymers poly(ϵ-caprolactam)-block-polybutadiene prepared by anionic polymerization,part III. Model polymerizations initiated with potassium salt of ϵ-caprolactam and accelerated with isocyanates and their derivatives

Anionic polymerization of ?-caprolactam was initiated with the potassium salt of ?-caprolactam and accelerated with phenyl isocyanate, toluylene diisocyanate, 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, some derivatives of these isocyanates (urethanes, ureas, and allophanates), or combinations of phenyl isocyanate with its derivatives at 150°C. The effect of individual structures on the polymerization kinetics and their contribution to the preparation of block copolymers of ?-caprolactam with hydroxy-terminated prepolymers, in-situ functionalized with diisocyanates, are discussed on the basis of a detailed analysis of time functions of polymer yield and degree of polymerization.     

Effects of intravenous L-acetylcarnitine on retinal oscillatory potentials

L-acetylcarnitine is a compound with cholinergic properties and putative action on the visual system and the glucose metabolism. Ten healthy, emmertropic volunteers (age range: 21 to 28 years) were studied. Each subject was administered 5, 10, and 30 mg/kg acute intravenous doses of L-acetylcarnitine and matching placebo. Retinal oscillatory potentials to full-field flash stimulation were recorded before and 30, 60, and 120 min after administration. A systematic reduction of the implicit time of the P2 and N2 oscillatory potential components was observed after administration of the 10 and 30 mg/kg doses: significant changes were not evident at the 5 mg dose or after placebo. The latency reduction was significantly correlated with the postdrug increment of the L-acetylcarnitine plasma concentration. No other systematic modification in latency of amplitude was observed.The results were presented in part at the XXV I.S.C.E.V. Symposium, Sarasota (Florida), April 26–30, 1987.     

Influence of Electromagnetic Fields on Function of Automated External Defibrillators

Objectives: In this study, the authors tested whether electromagnetic interference (EMI) is able to impair correct electrocardiogram analysis and produce false‐positive shock advice from automated external defibrillators (AEDs) when the true rhythm is sinus. Methods: Nineteen healthy subjects were used to test five AEDs available on the Austrian market in a prospective, open, and sequence‐randomized study. The primary outcome variable was the absolute number of shocks advised in the presence of EMI. The secondary outcome was the number of impaired analyses caused by incorrectly detected patient movements or electrode failure. Results: Of 760 tests run, 18 (2.37%) cases of false‐positive results occurred, and two of five AEDs recommended shocks in the presence of sinus rhythm. Of 760 tests run, no electrode failures occurred. There were 27 occurrences (3.55%) of motion detected by an AED in the presence of strong electromagnetic fields. Conclusions: AED models differ in their response to EMI; it may be useful to consider specific safety requirements for areas with such fields present. Working personnel and emergency medical services staff should be informed about potential risks and the possible need for patient evacuation before AEDs are attached and shock recommendations are followed.     

Implications of postvaccination hepatitis B surface antigenemia in the management of exposures to body fluids.

A neonate vaccinated against HBV was the source of an occupational exposure to blood. She was tested for hepatitis B surface antigen and found to be positive, leading to unnecessary treatment, retesting, and concern. Evaluation of the infectious status of HBV should rely on other means if vaccination has recently occurred.     

Outcome treatment of pseudoarthrosis of long bones with decortication method depends on osteosynthesis]

Purpose of work was estimation of the results of treatment of pseudoarthrosis of the long bone with the method of decortication, with use of autogenic bone depends on kind of pseudoarthrosis and kind of osteosynthesis. In the years 1995-2005 56 patients were treated because of pseudoarthrosis of long bone in our Clinic. Pseudoarthrosis is classified according to Weber-Cech classification. In the methodology of clinical estimation and subjective estimation of the patient Stewart and Hundley and Anderson classification were used. Union was achieved in 51 cases. Time of bone union achievement was 5 months. The results of treatment are depends on morfology of pseudoartrosis and are independs of kind of osteosynthesis.     

Psychosocial factors associated with poor diabetes self-care management in a specialized Center in Mexico City

To examine the relationship between demographic, clinical and psychosocial variables and diabetes self-care management in Mexican type 2 diabetic patients. Cross-sectional study of 176 consecutive patients with type 2 diabetes aged 30-75 years, attending a tertiary health-care center in Mexico City. A brief medical history and previously validated questionnaires were completed. The study group consisted of 64 males/112 females, aged 55 +/- 11 years, mean diabetes duration of 12 +/- 8 years and HbA1c of 9.0 +/- 2.0%, 78.4% reported following the correct dose of diabetes pills or insulin, 58% ate the recommended food portions, and 44.3% did exercise three or more times per week. A good adherence to these three recommendations was observed in only 26.1% of the patients. These patients considered as a group were characterized by a greater knowledge about the disease (P < 0.00001), regular home blood glucose monitoring (P < 0.01), an inner perception of better diabetes control (P = 0.007), good health (P = 0.004) and better communication with their physician (P < 0.02). A poor adherence to two or the three main diabetes care recommendations was associated with a depressive state (OR 2.38, 95% CI 1.1-4.9, P < 0.01) and a history of excessive alcohol intake (OR 4.03, 95% CI 1.1-21.0, P = 0.03). Poor adherence to standard diabetes care recommendations is frequently observed in patients with type 2 diabetes attending a specialized health care center in Mexico City. Depression must be identified and treated effectively.     

Disseminating tumor cells and their interactions with leukocytes visualized in the brain.

Brain tumors are increasingly prevalent. Recent advances focus attention on individual, disseminated tumor cells that cannot be imaged or eliminated. Cells of the immune system may be ideally suited to attack individual tumor cells, but more basic understanding is needed. We describe a rat model, using the lacZ reporter gene, that allows identification of individual tumor cells, and tumor-leukocyte interactions in vivo. The model demonstrates how widely tumor can disseminate, without secondary tumorigenesis or recruitment of nonneoplastic cells. It demonstrates that leukocytes have access to disseminating tumor. Among its many applications, this work lays a foundation for developing cell-mediated immunotherapy against individual brain tumor cells.
